Millennials and Gen Z have largely given up. Occupy Wall Street did nothing; BLM did nothing; Trump was re-elected after his first term. It feels hopeless.

People are socially isolated. Most interactions happen on private social media platforms where people have been conditioned to filter their responses to not upset arbitrary algorithms, or future educational institutions, or future employers. The Luigi Mangione discourse caused people to break from that, but look at how YouTube and Reddit wrangled that discussion down. And that was just praising a shooting that already happened.

Most important: Years of hearing praise for government policy and legal means of change has left most Americans paralyzed when those systems are failing. We were raised on Martin Luther King Jr. without mention of Malcom X. We were told to "protest and rally" for change - period. No one explained the unspoken threat behind protests - of the force of 20,000 or 40,000 or however-many angry people. And those in power know that. Every modern protest and rally at most threatens to not re-elect the current politicians, and the Republicans have made it clear they don't plan on honoring that election.

When people do try protests that are disruptive, people complain about it.

i think protests should be focused on stopping the machinery that's grinding us all up. But if your protest means traffic or a closed Walmart then all the short sighted idiots and all the people barely holding on get mad.

I don't think people are smart enough to deal with this world we have created.

Censoring FUCK seems kind of ironic.

I think your right

[–] zarkanian 7 points 2 days ago

Fuckity-fuck this censored-ass Internet. Shitcockballs

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

It's pathetic. The fucking internet is great for saying fuck, this pansy-ass self-censoring really needs to stop.

I fully agree with the content OP posted.

But I cannot help myself.

because it turned out Americans are too meek or too ignorant to act

[–] [email protected] 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

People need to miss at least three meals in a row before they start getting serious. We don't have the material conditions yet to act.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

That's like trying to put on the seatbelt after the crash

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Humans are dumb at the macro scale

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (4 children)

How are you gonna act with an empty stomach tho?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Without an alternative. People get very unhappy when they're starving.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 days ago

Very hungry.

[–] captain_aggravated 4 points 2 days ago

On fat reserves.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

"Cowardly" is the word you're looking for.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (5 children)

It also doesn't help that all of the people with guns, like the current situation. They may subsequently change their mind when the realities of the situation start to hit in a few years, but currently they're alright with it.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

Not all gun owners like the current situation.

Source: Gun Owner, do not like current situation. There's a vast difference between a responsible gun owner and those ammosexuals who just want to be given an excuse to open fire at anything.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

The rampant delusion that right-wing conservatives are the only Americans with guns lol. Possibly they're just the only ones dumb enough to believe their guns and weekend target shooting would enable them to win against the US military. That would kind of make sense, cuz they'd assume Jeezus would be on their side.

[–] the_crotch 3 points 2 days ago

I guess Jesus was on Vietnam and Afghanistan's side

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Like the idea of a bunch of cave dwelling zealots beating three empires in a row, absurd

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

I definitely wouldn't say "all". There's plenty of us with guns that do not like the situation. What exactly do you expect everyone to do, go outside and shoot their Republican neighbor? Someone tried shooting Trump, and most leftists with >2 brain cells would agree that it would've been an absolute shit show if he'd succeeded in killing him.

I don't disagree that the group of people that like the situation are more heavily armed than the group of people that dislike it, but the same thing has been said for a decade now... Why not start changing that situation?

Everything is inherently political and only apathetic cowards disengage from this reality.

[–] Jax 6 points 2 days ago

Large emphasis on apathetic cowards

[–] [email protected] 60 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Capitalism is very good at protecting itself.

Join a union and vote radical left.

[–] zarkanian 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

vote radical left.

If people voted based on issues instead of party loyalty...the US would be a completely different country.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People should vote in their genuine best self interest, which is working class in 99% of all cases and they would have been best served with a mostly socialist party. So I guess i agree that party loyalty isn't great.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

party loyalty is great, you should always make sure your party hasn't magically become a different party since the last time you voted.

imagine if social democrats could stop fucking turning themselves into neolibs, even the socialists here in sweden seem to be threatening to ease off the leftism

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 hours ago

Thats ehy party loyalty sucks ass. Just look at the last 5 yrs of a party to make your voting decision. Who did what and why? Its not hard.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s especially good at protecting itself from literally zero threats.

Let’s not pretend Americans are putting up any kind of fight at all.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right, because capitalism has conditioned us to be complacent.

Which other system was not good at that?

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 days ago
[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 days ago

Every other system. Capitalism is far more adaptable, which is not a good sign btw. Because if a system fails to provide for its citizens it should make way for others.

In terms of providing, others were better.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Most the population is checked out you’re not getting a revolution until they starve.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

And the other half of wrecking the US economy is to remove resources from the general population, making it much harder for revolution to happen. So by the time it gets to that point, there will be little resources for most of the population beyond lacking food.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago

Most Americans couldn't revolution their way out of a Walmart.

Sure, but I miss when the internet was an escape, now its kinda of dead for me, I spend more time offline because of the 24/7 outrage, like yeah im upset too, but it just gets repetitive, im not built to be stressed out constantly, im getting blood pressure issues, had to dlt x because the algoirthim shifted towards controversy hard, and have to use lemmy less since its just depressing/exciting in a bad way news all the time.
Really wish lemmy was an exception, considering how small it is and how powerless the userbase is, yet its just another source of stress in my life lately

Maybe Lemmy could have support for categorising/tagging communities and/or posts, such that one could follow, block, or maybe filter them. I.e. tag a community "Politics", and users could simply express a lack of interest on the aforementioned category, and see no further from said community and others alike

Because people give their power away to authorities, instead of taking control over their own lives. No one is going to rescue any of you. Only when we all accept this and move on, together, will we ever be free.
