I wanted to suggest a potential idea for an open source project inspired by the (now defunct) AO3 Disco app.

For those who aren’t familiar, AO3 Disco was an unofficial tool that used machine learning to offer personalized Archive of Our Own (AO3) fanfiction recommendations.

Users could share a fanfic they liked, and the app would generate tailored suggestions for new stories, include filters, and link directly to AO3 works.

Unfortunately, AO3 Disco is no longer available, largely due to concerns from the AO3 team about privacy and the risks of third-party apps interacting with user accounts.

Would there be interest in developing an open source tool that:

  • Provides personalized, privacy-respecting recommendations for AO3
  • Lets users input a work or tag and get new fic suggestions (without requiring login)
  • Includes robust filtering options and links to original AO3 pages
  • Is entirely transparent and community-built to address security and trust concerns

I think such a project could really help fanfiction fans while respecting user privacy and AO3’s terms, especially if designed with a focus on open source ethics and transparency.

Personally, I’d love to see something like this happen, but I don’t have the time, knowledge, or energy to start it myself.

Would anyone else be interested in collaborating on something like this?

Or does anyone know of existing open source efforts in this area?

**Edit: **

I'm just curious because Window Capture is mentioned in many an online forum and still there in the OBS Studio documentation, but in my version it's gone from the list of Sources.

I found an OBS Forum post where OP asks the same question; however, in their case, OP is running Mac OS, and the OBS kb mentions Window Capture's having been with superseded by macOS Screen Capture for Mac users.

I'm running on Bazzite Linux, Gnome, Wayland. OBS Studio version 31.0.3. I believe I'm using the flatpak version.

EDIT: Using Distrobox, I confirmed the Window Capture option has gone away at some point between versions 29 and 31 (at least for Linux users anyway)—full update w/ screenshots in the comments.

EDIT 2: After more tinkering, I figured out that the option for Window Capture hasn't gone away entirely, it's just been tucked away behind a couple clicks and renamed. To get to it:

With Screen Capture selected in Sources, click Properties (for me, there's a big Properties button above the Sources pane, below the Preview pane).

On the Properties dialog, click Open Selector.

On the next screen, there are two options: Application Window and Entire Screen—select Application Window.

There, it'll display a list of windows, one of which will be the game's window if the game is running.

The best way to install them is through the F-Droid store, which is a catalogue of FOSS software for Android. It's installable by downloading the .apk file linked on the front page of the F-Droid projec'ts website. The mentioned apps from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology can then be found by searching for "SECUSO", which is the name of the research project behind them all.

Alternatively, you can also get them through the Google Play Store under this link or again by searching for "SECUSO".

In particular, I recommend getting the QR code reader, because many of the free-to-use scanners route everything you scan through their servers, so they're obviously collecting your data on their servers, wherever these may be located.

Wondering if anyone knows good alternatives to Discord's screen sharing feature (good quality, good framerate, low latency, and sound support).

Preferably FOSS, but at this point I'm taking all answers. Feel free to redirect me if there's any other community I should ask this in.

Blender 4.4 brings improved animation workflow, better modeling, new sculpt brush, and smoother video editing, plus over 700 issues fixed.

It introduces Action Slots, revolutionizing animation workflows by letting multiple data-blocks share a single Action. The Video Sequencer continues to improve with quality-of-life upgrades for text editing, expanded support for codecs including H.265 and 10/12-bit videos, and performance improvements that make editing faster than ever.

And much more..

Or apple wallet for that matter. I'm pretty new to the concept of a digital wallet, and I'm guessing that if I eschew these google and apple offerings then I'm not really doing much beyond basically a folder called 'passes' but nonetheless a dedicated app that only opens pdfs and images and 'passes' rather than anything else still seems helpful.

Unfortunately so far I've now been offered the opportunity to add things to a wallet twice in 2 days and both times I'm provided only with a link to add to a google wallet or an apple wallet, I don't get .pkpass or .espass files. Those links, whether loaded on a desktop or an android smartphone don't directly link to a file in any way so there seems to be no obvious way to bypass being asked to sign in and use google's wallet. So far I've had to download a PDF, to add in to Pass Android but it only imported 1 of 2 pages so I had to then manually make 2 pdfs out of it at which point, if I'm keeping the pdf locally anyway, I'm not sure it was really easier even if the app is convenient access. I did manage to use Pass Android to make my own barcode to get around the fact that the membership card I was offered only had the google wallet links.

Is there a way to actually make use of these FOSS wallets? Because I'm not sure what they really do if it's so hard to actually get a hold of pass files.

Been working on this the past couple months as an exercise in learning Rust. Just wanted to share how it's come so far!

torrentz2 (tz2) is an advanced, experimental utility for working with .torrent metadata files. It supports a wide array of BEPs and v1/v2/hybrid formats.

Features

  • Create, Edit, or Verify torrent files
  • Convenient config file to define default options and trackers
  • Multithreaded hashing
  • Include/exclude files based on globs and if they are symlinks
  • Create a single torrent file from disparate input paths, provided they share a common root
  • Intelligent automatic piece size selection with support for up to 64 MiB
  • Digitally sign/verify embedded signatures with standard X.509 certificates utilizing RSA or EC signatures
    • Includes utility command to generate an appropriate root CA and leaf cert
  • Optionally include md5 or sha1 sums per-file with v1 torrents

Optional Features

  • CPU hardware accelerated hashing (on by default)
  • GPU accelerated hashing (coming soon, maybe hopefully)
  • Compile to a static binary

Why another utility like this? Well, there wasn't one that met my requirements. That is, feature rich, oriented towards PT users, and supporting the v2 format. It's also, as far as I can tell, the only modern utility supporting the draft BEP 0035 (Torrent Signing). I intend to make use of this in a future project.

Right now all the main features are implemented, except the planned GPU hashing. Once I've had some more time to polish it up and write documentation, I intend to publish on crates.io. For now, if you'd like to try it out you can build from source, or I have some builds for x86_64 Linux available in the repo.

Hi Guys, i have been learning go recently. i come from a python background, so go is fun language to learn for me. I know a bit c and it has helped me a lot Anyways, I have made a little project to exercise on my go skills. It's a gravity system simulator. It basically the Newton's law of gravity with raylib. i'd be very happy if you make a PR especially people who are learning go as well, So it would be good project to start a new path. thanks for reading. here is the link to the github repo: https://github.com/shayan15sa/phi-sim

Implementing SQL JOIN Support in ChronDB via PostgreSQL Protocol

The game of creating databases using #git internals continues
this week was the time to implement inner/left/right join in the #postgresql protocol

I tried to explain a little about the architecture implemented to perform joins

PeerTube is a decentralized and federated alternative to YouTube. The goal of PeerTube is not to replace YouTube but to offer a viable alternative using the strength of ActivityPub and P2P protocols.

Being built on ActivityPub means PeerTube is able to be part of a bigger social network, the Fediverse (the Federated Universe). On the other hand, P2P technologies help PeerTube to solve the issue of money, inbound with all streaming platform: With PeerTube, you don't need to have a lot of bandwidth available on your server to host a PeerTube platform because all users (which didn't disable the feature) watching a video on PeerTube will be able to share this same video to other viewers.

If you are curious about PeerTube, I can't recommend you enough to check the official website to learn more about the project. If after that you want to try to use PeerTube as a content creator, you can try to find a platform available there to register or host yourself your own PeerTube platform on your own server.

The development of PeerTube is actually sponsored by Framasoft, a french non-for-profit popular educational organization, a group of friends convinced that an emancipating digital world is possible, convinced that it will arise through actual actions on real world and online with and for you!

If you want to contribute to PeerTube, feel free to:

The European Commission sees open-source software as more than an IT tool. Policy makers are encouraging open-source ecosystems to drive innovation, autonomy and collaboration in a world where global trade is being redrawn.

This trade dispute highlights something most open-source advocates have known for years: open source is freedom. It’s freedom from monopolies, freedom from arbitrary pricing, and freedom from foreign influence.
