I have noticed that lemmy so far does not have a lot of fake accounts from bots and AI slop at least from what I can tell. I am wondering how the heck do we keep this community free of that kind of stuff as continuous waves of redditors land here and the platform grows.

Weird question maybe, but I don't think I ever liked the taste of fish, except when I was young. I vaguely remember eating fish fingers and (I think) plaice. But then I stopped and never went back to it. I dislike the smell, I find salmon bland (although that may have been the salmon I tasted once). Are there any particular fish that would make the crossover from chicken to fish easier? Or any recipes that don't disguise the taste of the fish too much, but make it more palatable for somebody that isn't crazy about the taste? I see the health benefits and would love to just get stuck in, but there seems to be a block with the associated smell and I guess a one off bad one that put me off eating it. I picked up cod in the supermarket today, and then decided I should ask here first...๐Ÿ˜ So hopefully I get a mixture of answers, but mostly some helpful. Thanks for reading.

Had a bad experience a few weeks ago when I was drinking milk from a freshly-opened bottle of milk, and after I had almost finished my first glass I started thinking something was off about the taste. I figured that if it was expired, I would have noticed by now. So I poured my second glass, and to my horror chunks came out.

I wish I had thought of returning the bottle before I dumped it all down the sink in a panic. I would have liked my four dollars back.

I was put off of milk for weeks after that. Now I'm paranoid. As stated in the title, I can't smell, so my sense of taste is also not the best. I just got more milk, and I can't tell if the milk I just drank is actually slightly sour or if I'm just placebo-effecting the taste into being because I am expecting it to be spoiled. Is there a test I can do that will prove the milk is not spoiled?

Is it possible to know if a mechanic you want to apply to a game is patented before applying it or do you only find out when you are sued?

I signed up for an American Express preferred Blue card and got approved for a limit of $25,000. I have a 830 credit score. I realized that the places I shop don't accept that card and you have to pay for it yearly so I canceled it.

Then I decided I was going to get a Costco Visa. Once I signed up the credit limit was only $5,000. So I canceled that one. So I stupidly signed up for a Wells Fargo Visa and that was $4,000.

Don't leave yet and please don't make fun of me but I'm not done being stupid. I decided I wanted a different American Express card and when I signed up for it the credit limit was $2,000 so I canceled that one.

Again I know I'm fucking stupid but how bad did I just fuck up my credit?

So I just recently got a Sony WM-EX631 Cassette Walkman from eBay. Its been pretty good the first month, had to replace the cassette door on the transparent case but other than that fine. Now, it seems there is an issue with the autostop/autoreverse function. The cassette was intermittently reversing to the opposite side at random, like in the middle of a song. Once I changed the mode to not reverse, now it just stops as soon as I hit play even mid tape. I'm wondering if the mechanism for detecting auto reversing needs attention. From what I've gathered they use some sort of transducers on a reflective gear to accomplish this. Is that information correct? If anyone knows anything I'd appreciate it.

Hypothetically, that is.

It is somewhat of xy problem too, so please read the post for more details.

A bit about my background - I am currently doing Bachelours of Technology (last semester) from a somewhat reputed university. (If you belive in those sham rankings - it is in top 200 in world).

I want to do a doctorate (and stay in academia/research, not interested in industry). I am still not fixated on a particular research field (intersted by many things) but I have a strong inclanation towards one, so currently that only.

One option is to do phd in my current uni only, but thing is that my uni is not that great in terms of research (can be generalised to country as well to some extent) - mostly it comes down to lack of funding and lack of students interested in doing research, most people are interested in joing some or other industry.

Other option is to go abroad. Considering the current environment, my current preference would be "Europe only".

From what I know, doing a doctorate in most european schools requires masters.

Also before anybody says this - I know for doctorate, the school matters less, and a good supervisor matters more. I understand this, but I can not really find any way to find a good supervisor. Maybe it is my ignorance, but I have never really paid attention to any names, and If I staart looking up names, there are tons. Also, I don't really know how to rate people. One thing would be to find someone with my interests, and ask them, but I do not know anyone. One is to rank them by their publications, but that definitely does not feel right to me. Some people just have a easier chance to get in bigger journals. I know at the end of the day, citations do not depend much on journal, but still it does not feel right. Also, most newer profs are definitely handicapped here (because they just have not had enough time to get enough citations, or may be their research may not be justly appreciated)

Another thing is, I would prefer to do masters in the same institution in which i would be potentially doing my phd, mostly because I do not want to spend a lot of time relocating (I am lazy).

Another thing is - I would really prefer a school where there is no or low academic fees (for low, lets say 1000-1500 Euros, because that is roughly what I pay currently). I do not really want to burden my parents anymore, and not having to pay a exorbident amount would be a great help.

I have done some lookup - in europe, from what I can find, it is mostly german uni which are offering no tution fees (I know that is not a general statement, for example I checked TU Munich has my prefered interest as masters program, and also no tution fees, but there are more)

I have tried doing "interest" phd and "interest" masters and a billion results come, mostly reasearch groups - but they all seem good to me.

One way to compare is use the said "sham" rankings. I think they do a good-sh job in rough categorisation, for example if they say some school is top 10, and some school is 1000+, I would generally accept that (but I think in that sense, most people would be able to tell that, sometimes just by having a look). But how their rankings swing wildly for some schools, where nothing really changed, and also, they don't put out weights for individual components, they say they use n number of components to judge, and also claim n components have n different wieghts, but we don't know them. They also sometimes give subject/domain wise rankings, which is better, but there is still a fundamental problem - their sources for ranking, and being private ventures, potential for being swayed by "some people" is deal breaker for me. So I can not blindly depend on them. I would much rather prefer human opinion on forums. Reddit has helped to some extent - but there are definitely both sides of opinions present, and I can not compare.

Also if anybody wants to know how did i choose when I did for bachelours - well I did not choose. In our country we have a nation wide entrance exam, for our best schools, and you are alloted based on ranking in that exam. So only choice I had made was to give that exam.

I want to know both - in general - how to compare different schools/supervisors and more specific to me - what should I do (for this part, name of schools/programs would be helpful)

Could they do it? Deactivate Windows licenses, block Cloud services, access to Office 365 and whatnot?

I've been in a few situations where I need substantial help from strangers, and some have offered to help (most haven't followed through) but I just can't do it.

For example someone offered to help me move and I just feel super uncomfortable about it to the point where I'd rather risk something bad happening to me. Like I feel super awkward and uncomfortable accepting huge favours from strangers

Someone even offered a place to stay for me with my pets but I can't accept it cause I feel way too awkward and like I owe them or something, like I have a huge fear and anxiety about it

Like I just feel like a disgusting parasite wasting their time and energy and it's also humiliating

Is that normal?

So I want to swap off of Spotify. Most of the time it works great, but the annoyances with their UX are starting to build up. From not ordering albums in release order on certain screens, to having to wait a good few seconds before turning off their shuffle+, and their shuffle not being very shuffle-y to begin with.

I have a couple of requirements:

  • A decent Linux client.
  • Be able to easily select playback device from other devices (for example start playback on my PC from my phone).
  • Preferably pretty straightforward UX philosophy, i.e. haven't started going down any enshitification with AI, "we know best" kind of elements.

I don't particularly care for the highest of lossless quality audio. I don't posses any audio equipment where I would have any shot of telling the difference. As long as its not the experience I had with YouTube music where some random persons heavily compressed upload of a song would start playing.

My main contenders are Tidal, Qobuz, and deezer. The latter two I have very little experience with.

I've tried Tidal before, but my main gripe with it was scrolling through large playlists (about 2000 songs) was very slow, as it loaded in songs as you scrolled through (think endless scrolling on ddg or Lemmy) making it tedious to go to artists starting with a later character in the alphabet. Maybe it was just the Linux client, an issue on my machine, or if they've fixed it since, would be great to hear if any of you have had the same issue.

Qobuz and deezer I haven't really tried or heard much about from a users perspective.

I know some people swear by buying (or ship in under the jolly roger) all their music and use jellyfin or just local files for playback. I'm not very keen on that idea, the convince and discoverability of music on a streaming platform is what made me go to Spotify and away from winamp in the first place.

Screenshot says it. Please recommend alternative Leftist news sources. I am in UK but I read news from anywhere, any language if my browser can access it/translate it.

Here in UK, I have tried The Canary, Novara Media, Byline Times, Morning Star - all have strengths and weaknesses, none are a perfect fit. Still looking for my 'daily paper'.

Thanks!

With the boycott for Teslas seemingly going strong I was wondering if anyone has successfully removed the proprietary software off any of the models or removed it from the Tesla network?

Considering that the cameras send data to other cars on the network to be processed (using the customers power instead of the company's) this seems better than just reselling to me.

The summer is coming soon to the Northern Hemisphere. How do you plan to combat the heat? I live in a regular apartment without air conditioning, and installing a full-scale system is not an option. I wonder what my options are, and how other people are planning to deal with the issue.
