An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

https://dullmensclub.com/

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine or advice forum.
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions, identify objects or get advice. We accept very few questions, and they must be over topics much more difficult than what is easily discoverable with a search. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. Not hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

8. All polls must have an "Africa, by Toto" option. Why? Because we hear the drums echoing tonight.

This is a tad embarrassing. You see, I thought that I was merely copying a popular Facebook group. I was unaware that Dull Men's Club was an official club. Please give the site a peruse as it is quite a delight!

Was a bit of a bother and a lot of cutting for such a small area, but it’s in. Skirting boards coming soon TM

I find this a bit weird, but I just fell asleep on the sofa while watching YouTube. The weird part was I had a very vivid dream that I was watching an entirely different YouTube video

One that doesn't wear so quickly. I like the ones with the suction cup and scraper. However, I have yet to find one that lasts longer than a couple of months. Any suggestions?

I was supposed to attach it to the seat post with a provided clip but I like to live dangerously so I attached it to the frame with zip-ties instead. The duct tape is there to prevent the frame from getting scratched and the grip tape keeps it aligned and from moving around.

I usually make cornbread but tonight I figured, why not make cornbread and baked potatoes? Kids were into it, I’ll probably make baked potatoes with chili next time as well.

Changed the oil in our main daily driver, probably was a bit earlier than strictly necessary but it was past the service mileage stipulated in the manual and it’s above freezing finally. Managed to not make a mess and didn’t run into any issues. Even torqued the drain plug to within spec. Then got it washed to get rid of the salt crust from the past few weeks and wash out any oil drips from the filter the got on top of the plastic air guard.

I'm not much for shopping or fashion but I realized my closet had a bunch of literal decade plus old button downs and sweaters and such I haven't worn in many years.

I bagged a few for trash that are beat up, bagged some for donation, and vacuum-space saver bagged the few worth keeping but currently uninteresting.

So nice to not have to wrestle to get useful, regularly worn things stored in my pretty-small closet.

Recipe:

  1. Burn the corners off of one sheet of paper with a lighter. I used A4, but I'm sure US Letter works too.
  2. Crumple it some and then straighten it out.
  3. Make some black coffee, any temperature and pour it into something that can fit the paper laying flat
  4. Bathe the paper until properly stained (or to taste, I guess)
  5. Roast the paper on 100 degrees C for 30 minutes with the convector fan running

The result is a perfect "treasure map" for use as a D&D prop during tonight's session with my kids.

This morning it was my turn to walk the dog. I took her to a nearby park with two hiking loops, which are about a mile total. Lots of folks bring their dogs here and although there are signs to keep your dog on leash, almost no one follows them. So, I let mine off whenever I go there. She enjoys being under the trees and sniffing. But, there are many squirrels and if she catches one moving, she’ll often take off running after it. Depending on how driven she is by the squirrels I might have to put her on leash so that she calms down and walks next to me. Today, there were a few other folks with their dogs, but none that my dog found appealing. Occasionally, when she meets a dog she likes, she’ll befriend them by doing zoomies in the field and getting the other dog to chase her. We finished our walk and went home.

It is self propelled. It took me a quarter of the time to do our lawns as it normally does, so I had time to trim the hedges...

This morning I made pancakes for my little one (ok, he’s a high school senior, and it was an egg, cantaloupe and some pancakes). His favorite is chocolate chip: I can do that!

As I was making them I realized I didn’t have enough chocolate chips. But I could still be the hero, I had mini-chips to make energy bites!

I don’t know if this counts as science, but I discovered the minis sink right to the bottom while full sized are easier to keep in suspension. The minis made it a lot harder to give each a consistent chocolate taste

It was loose when we moved in, and broke completely a couple of weeks later.

I looked up a video on YouTube how to fix it, and after initially thinking the hinges only came with an entire new seat, found that you could order a “fixing kit” which had all of the essential parts seen in the video.

The result is satisfactory.

Didn't get much actual shopping done. This isn't a rare thing or anything, there's no custody or other limitations going on.

Got the discounted chinese take away boxes for lunch and the boy got a small bag of chips from the Italian takeaway as a snack before lunch.

The previous owner worked for the phone company and had run some sort of 10 conductor shielded cable under the yard to the shed 40 years ago. The pairs weren't twisted but I threw some RJ45 ends on there and did a quick test - it worked. After I finished the runs and now I have a PoE+ camera on my shed. I am pleased with the result.

But now I'm in bed questioning my decision.

I’ve been at my place for 3 years now, drapeless.

The color is burlywood.

I drove to the lab, waited in line, gave them my information and waited. When called back, I reviewed the labs and noted one was missing. I left and called my doctor’s office to get the lab work sent over. Then I checked some emails and waited. After a while I went back inside and waited in line again and this time they had the lab work. I had my blood drawn then left. Then I drove home.

I got tired of having to search and sign up for wherever my favorite movie is streaming this month, so I'm going back to DVDs for the foreseeable future, until the streaming overlords get their shit together. So... maybe forever. But at least for now.

It's nice. I put a disc in, and press play, and it plays.

I hadn't quite realize how much messing around the streaming services had added to my movie nights.

(Recover password, verify my email, sign up with a credit card, authorize the TV, remove the old iPad because of a device limit, sign in at least one extra time for no certain reason, sometimes discover I chose the wrong service and start over.)

It was hitting the jamb on the bottom. The hinges seemed tight, so I just hit it with 40 grit sandpaper since it’s solid wood. Hit it with some sealant and it looks good as new.

I had to retighten the handle too. When I went to do the final test I was a little worried it the handle might not work correctly so I made sure I had my phone, my leatherman, and a bottle of water “just in case”.

I was surprised and very happy how well it came out.

Finally migrated my self hosted services to ipv6 from ipv4.

My favorite pan for making pancakes was used to make pancakes so I'm waiting to have breakfast until the dishes are clean.

I expect you to all note this down for future reference.
