On brand.

It's oddly appropriate that those who are most focused on the supposed inherent moral imperative to have children are so often such awful parents.

[–] [email protected] 38 points 3 months ago

He hasn’t got the time to parent his children, he’s got a full time job going on podcasts to berate the rest of us for not having children.

[–] [email protected] 85 points 3 months ago (2 children)

”And he is really into Pokemon cards right now, he’s going through a Pokemon phase... I mean he’s really into it, so he is trying to talk to me about Pikachu and I am on the phone with Donald Trump, I’m like ‘son, shut the hell up for 30 seconds about Pikachu,’” Vance told the podcast.

Wow. Maybe Vance should have gotten some stability in his career before he had kids. Maybe figured himself out a little better and grown as a person until he was ready.

Children are a life-altering obligation, after all. Maybe Vance would have been happier if he focused on his career first. Of course, that’s a deeply personal matter, and I would never assume that I know better than someone else what is best for their life.

What a weird thing to say to your kid. That's not normal. What happen to protect the kids? "Shut the hell up so I can talk to the rapist, convicted felon and credibly accused pedophile!"

Are these the family values?

[–] [email protected] 44 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Absurd. Pokemon are, and always will be, more important than anything trump has to say.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago

That implies trump has anything important to say.

[–] [email protected] 42 points 3 months ago (15 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion While JD has said plenty of horrible things, this reads more like someone relating how they felt in the moment than reciting what was actually said. I'm sure most parents have felt this way at some point. We don't need to make this mole hill into a mountain. There's already a whole mountain range of his shit that's actually egregious.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I'm conflicted.

I feel that the assessment you made is accurate.

But, Context matters. and in this case he made this comment that shows him being annoyed as a dad after going on the record about how useless people without kids are and calling childless women crazy cat ladies.

It just reeks to me of him being jealous of people who don't have kids and/or him regretting being a parent?

Idk. I'm not sold on my take. I guess good for him for being in the kids life in a significant way, but again I don't like the framing of his anti family stances with complaining about being a parent. Pick a side lol

Seeing that picture reminded me his kids are biracial. So to add to this fatherhood moment: he also supports a man who doesn't respect someone of mixed heritage, the very thing his own kids are.

It's not cognitive dissonance, it's wilful suspension of the truth and the reason politics are driving wedges into our families and friends.

Lastly, I'm not a conspiracy theorist but if another country wanted to destroy us from within this seems like a good way to do it.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

JD Vance is racist towards and looks down on his own mixed race children. Not a new thing for conservatives

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, either, but my preferred suspicion is that it's aliens. They've tried a number of techniques, from implanting mind-control devices (Mitch McConnell and the way his face carries a look of horrified disgust at the things they make him do) to direct infiltration by putting one of their agents in an ill-fitting human suit (Ted Cruz). Ultimately, they seem to have given up the finesse approach, and settled on lobotomizing humans with existing personality disorders to create a RAID (redundant array of inexpensive dipshits) to simply overwhelm our system of government.

It's the only explanation that really makes sense to me.

This is a bs story. This was just a recounting of him getting the call for VP. It’s not a direct quote. Just how he felt, and if you’ve had kids, there are plenty of times you want to tell them to shut the hell up like that but don’t say it that way. There are reasons to not like this guy but we can be better than this rage bait bs.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 months ago (1 children)

For real, friends in discord were aghast at this, and I’m thinking “bro I’ve heard you tell your kids to shut the fuck up.”

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Not that you should telling your kids to stfu, but yelling that from the other room when they're screaming is a bit different than saying it to their face while they're trying to share something with you.

Can someone explain what a Pokémon "phase" is?

Is he implying that you become less interested in Pokémon at some point?

🤔

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago

My 14-year-old who had an Evee plushie and used to call our dog Charlie "Charmander" rolls her eyes when she sees Pokemon stuff now that she's a "I'm too cool for this kids stuff" teenager.

Then she asks if I can get her some Hello Kitty stickers for her to put on her phone case.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 3 months ago

Dude, you threw your wife and your kids in front of the bus because of Trump? You're never gonna recover from this, ever.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 3 months ago (4 children)

I dislike this guy as much as everyone else, but isn't the fact that his son wants to tell him about Pokémon all the time an indication that he is not a terrible father?

I mean, I can only speak from personal experience, but the kids I've seen who are treated badly do not want to talk to their parents about their interests.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 months ago

Somehow I have gone through over 14 years of parenthood without ever telling my child to "shut the hell up."

You say, "please be quiet for a minute, ok? We're talking about something important." Something like that seemed to work just fine when she was of the age where she constantly babbled about video games.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Or his son wants attention you can be treated poorly without being treated poorly physically.

Manny wats to interpret a situation and of a kid wants to tell him someone one time how do we know he is constantly wanting to talk about it.

Regardless, your comment does one thing it tries to side step the real glooming issue. You shouldn't be an ass to your kids by shutting them down the way he did. There are way better ways to handle this. I cuss like a sailor but I would never tell a kid to shut the hell up.

Nah, this is guys a fuckwad.

I wanted to tell my dad about Pokemon, but my parents were religious fanatics. They sent me to an all boys extreme religious group home for being autistic where kids were raped and beat. My parents wouldn't listen as I begged them to take me out and that we were being abused. They still defend the place 20 years later after it was sued into the ground. When I came out to them this year as transfem they told me not to contact them again and I haven't heard a word since.

It's not a very reliable indication that a kid wants to share their interests with their mom and dad. They're your parents. Kids crave bonding over their interests.

I still wish things were better and dad would play video games with me, even though I know he's a piece of shit sent from the lowest level of humanity attainable.

Can I adopt JD Vance's kid? Not because I particularly want to raise a child, but because that early enthusiasm shouldn't be snuffed out by Vance, especially not when he's talking to someone about whom he says:

  • "I’m a Never Trump guy."
  • "My god, what an idiot."
  • "America’s Hitler"
  • "Mr. Trump is unfit for our nation’s highest office."
  • "I can’t stomach Trump."

I agree with J. D. Vance's factual quotes, but not his political ambition, which apparently caused him to reverse-course on all that and bend the knee. My personal conspiracy theory is Trump chose him as VP Nominee because that enables Trump to humiliate Vance with his past comments and current subservience. He's just that petty. I hope he loses the election because of it...

Dude is a scumbag, but I think it's pretty easy to understand that what he says on a podcast, where he's promoting himself, and what he said to his child are probably not verbatim. We use hyperbole all the time. I might describe to a coworker a conversation with a client where I say, "And I was like, what the fuck do you expect?!" I obviously didn't use profanity in that exchange and I obviously wasn't super sarcastic to the client.

This one is a clickbait headline framing something that has poor optics as though it is literal fact when it's almost certainly paraphrasing. He probably said something more like, "Son, please be quiet," and the "shut the hell up" bit is describing the intensity of his emotion (and not in a hostile way, even).

Fuck JD, but this is a bullshit story.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 months ago

I shocked that such a good Christian would allow his children to play Pokemon. I was told by a pastor a few years back that Pokemon was evil, Satan's cards, etc., and that no good Christian family would allow their children to play it.

I guess he's a good political chameleon ! I mean he changed his stance on Trump.

You just know that guy sneaky sniffs his own fingers a lot. There is just something about the way he stands; like he's always a bit tensed for the opportunity to sneak a quick sniff.

Is there something wrong with sniffing your fingers? I unconsciously sniff my fingers all the time. It’s a behavior I picked up from my dad, who picked it up from his dad. It’s part of the way I interact with the world, I guess. Helps me know how things I’ve touched smell.

Pokemon isn't a phase, I'll talk Pokemon with his kid while he goes and loses an election.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago

I'm guilty of saying mean things to my kid too. Sometimes kids are just fucking annoying. If you recall, each and everyone of us were probably fucking annoying at some point in our life. I think though that I wouldn't do that for a douchebag like trump. Like, as a parent, we learn to avoid the toy isle at Walmart. Anything that triggers the blind craze for something from the kids so you're not out in that situation. Here though, with vans, he's basically insulting his kid while trump dildoes him for the vise president spot. He's boot licking it up all the way up trumps butthole until he's officially the VP.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I bet if his son was talking about this pokemon he wouldn't have yelled at his kid.

This doesn't read as a literal quote to me. I'm feeling 50/50 that was what he was thinking and said something more appropriate vs actually saying that. He was on a podcast, presumably in a storytelling/jokey frame of mind.
