Out of curiosity. For starters I'm a bit of both

On my first page of comments, I said, "Your comment was removed, I wonder why." I wanted to see the context and I kept following it back and an entire thread was missing if I go back far enough. There was no wheel of death or "deleted by user" or whatever it says. There was no removal in the mod logs. I don't think this is malice, but why aren't they keeping up the thread and just saying "removed by mod" or "deleted by user"? It's super confusing and it makes some really interesting threads just disappear. Is this instance rules or Lemmy rules?

Playing around with my old laptop today. Found out that Browsers are about it for Lemmy. Even though I'm on Windows 7, I said old, and can't even use my vpn surfshark, on here, shitjustworks.

It says you'll be able to block instances on a personal level, I'd like that option.

I should also say thanks for all that you guys do, I'm just checking on the status.

~~how can i know the de/federation status of the instance? IIRC the instance subscribed to an auto-defederation program to auto exclude bot instances and such. is there a way to distinguish these from the manual defederations? like exploding heads, or hexbear (i thought we were defederated from them but i've just seen the old posts from their users here on /c/main)~~

~~i'm asking just to have a way of knowing wich parts of the fediverse are hidden from view, since it's not obvious to me~~

also would like to know if there is a plan on the instance about threads? i've scoured The Agora but found nothing. wouldn't mind creating a discussion there

The past couple of days, I've been getting some cryptic errors when trying to upload images. Anyone else encounter this problem?

Tried to upload a jpeg:

If you don't, don't bother looking for it, it's honestly not worth your time.
Either way, we've taken steps to reduce the impact of such an event.

This is a follow-up to a prior post regarding un-moderated communities on our instance.

Of the 14 communities identified in the prior post, half have been adopted by new mods. Thanks to everyone who stepped up to volunteer! The remaining un-moderated communities fall into two categories:

Empty communities

Communities containing posts

[email protected]

The empty communities will be purged (deleted from the server). If anyone wants to recreate the communities in the future then they are free to do so.
The communities with content will be kept. They will be moderated by one of the admins until someone (hopefully) volunteers to take them over.

The next step is to identify communities that have absentee mods. During the Reddit exodus many new users joined Lemmy, created communities, and then apparently turned their attention elsewhere. I have started reaching out to mod accounts that have been inactive for several months. Once it is clear which communities need new mods, we will ask for volunteers.

The end goal of all this work is to have active users moderating each community. It increases the chances that spam, abuse, or inappropriate content will be addressed quickly.

If you are interested in becoming a moderator of any of the communities listed below, please look for the “Moderator Needed” post in the community and add a comment. You will be responsible for monitoring the community, dealing with any objectionable posts and comments, and hopefully building it up as a lively space for your fellow Lemmy users.

You can moderate using an account from another instance. However, due to a bug in Lemmy you will not receive user reports from the community. To make your life easier you should consider using a sh.itjust.works account for moderating sh.itjust.works communities, at least until that bug is fixed.

If any of these communities remain abandoned then we will eventually remove them.

Why does shitjustworks have so many bots? I see certain communities like this where brand new accounts just spam random images. I have a dozen new accounts blocked every day and it’s getting tedious.

What is their purpose?

I've been working on a simple opt-in solution, primarily for Lemmy end users like me (but also helpful for admins), to easily check the status/health of their favourite instance.

You don't need to do anything except confirming - I'll handle the rest. It should only take a few minutes for your instance to show up in lemmy-meter.

Out of the box it will send only 4 HTTP GET requests per minute to your instance. However that is totally configurable if it sounds too much or too little.

PS: I wasn't sure how to reach out to the admins short of messaging them individually.

The sole moderator of this community has not visibily engaged on lemmy for 3 months, either in terms of moderating or contributing, and it's leading to an overall degradation in the community. I'd like to he added as a mod there, at least until the owner comes back, so that the community can be maintained at a decent level.

Using my throwaway in fear of backlash or getting banned for criticism. I YET AGAIN saw another (presumably) CSAM poster. I only saw a glance but the number of downvotes and the fact that it's posted on random communities makes me believe that this is another CSAM poster. I reported it and an hour later, it's still there? Please it's so sickening. I might actually stop using this website.

I'm cross-posting this to [email protected] in case Issue #2 below is symptomatic of a sync issue that the admins need to know about.

My main account is on sh.itjust.works, but I am a mod for some communities on lemmy.world.

Issue #1: A few weeks ago I learned that user reports do not federate between instances (Github issue #3781). Therefore I cannot see reports from the .world communities.

Issue #2: As a workaround for #1, I created an account on lemmy.world. From my sh.itjust.works account I made my lemmy.world account a mod in my communities. Unfortunately, it is not taking effect. See the attached image for one example. My lemmy.world account does not know that it is now a moderator account.

Is issue #2 simply a sync issue between the two instances? Or is something else happening?

Is issue #1 expected to be resolved in the near future?

(1) This is an important feature to me because this little annoyance was part of why I set out to create the extension in the first place. Thanks to some help from @zero_gravitas, I was able to use the Lemmy API to grab the post details, and then run a search for it on your home instance. While most posts should only bring one result, there is a chance that there are multiple posts by the same user, in the same community, with the same title. If this is an issue, I'll make this search more specific.

🗣️ My questions for you:

Improving 'post to Lemmy'

• Right now the 'Post to Lemmy' button does a very basic search in the page meta tags for information. This works for most websites, but it is not perfect. What websites do you usually post from, and is the extension doing a good job of replicating how you format the post? Please share both good and bad examples, so we can fix what isn't working and keep what is.

Improving Post search

• Having the extension automatically count the number of posts and display it in the icon would be pretty nice, since then you would know about any posts for the news article / blog / video that you are looking at. However, there are privacy implications with this since it needs to send the URL to your home instance to do the search.
• I would like to add the option to whitelist specific websites, so the user can choose what browsing data they want to find posts for. Is this something you would list to use? What websites would you whitelist?

Anything else?

Please share any issues that you find. Lemmy and Kbin instances have a lot of variation in how things are structured, so there are bound to be some bugs that I haven't found yet. If you have any ideas for new features, please share them too! I'm always looking for new ideas to add to the project.

Like I said above, I won't be as active over the next few months in terms of getting new features out. The extension is now in good shape, and it covers most of the important use cases. There's still lots of cool stuff we can do with it, so please contribute ideas and expertise! When I get a chance, I'll pop in and grab a few more issues.
