Last year, a middle aged gentleman stopped me on the street to ask me what time it was. I told him "half past one and ten minutes." Just came naturally to me (I also wear an analog watch, so never really can tell the exact minute). I still remember the confused look on his face, and I imagine he's been working really hard to convert it into minutes. That made me self-conscious about saying the time, and I noticed I never say time in the hours-minutes format. My kids will be the same, as long as they pick up this habit from me rather than videos and movies.

To all the people saying it's "AI slop", it's not. This image is on a blog from 2014.

https://the-watchman-of-god.blogspot.com/2014/05/what-is-meaning-of-alice-in-wonderland.html

At least run it through a reverse image search before making any accusations.

ETA: Higher resolution image from 2016 here

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago

not the same image, but op's image is an ai upscale of the one you linked. the tells are

  1. the background is red instead of white
  2. the pattern on the sleeves is similar, but different.
  3. the original is flipped horizontally, and the upscale doesn't know that, so it tries to "fix" the numbers of the pocketwatch, turning the flipped "IX" into... "N"
[–] atomicbocks 20 points 1 day ago

They don’t look the same and it doesnt look like differences that can be explained by photoshop.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

The reverse image search spotted it well, but it isn't the same image. It's very likely the source where the image generator got its ideas from though: https://lemmy.world/post/31578519/17746077

You have 3 wishes, as indicated by the candle.

Well, now you know!

This meme looks entirely AI generated down to the joke

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

The original image dates back to 2016.

Here's proof

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

This looks like the same image at a glance, but like atomicbocks said, it's only proof of the plagiarism in the image generator. It spit out something very close to the original, but the proportions are off.

Here I've cropped it as close as I could get it to the OP's and bridged the last gap with G'Mic morph.

(Animated webp, I can confirm Jerboa doesn't support it.)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

God, the proportions of the original head and hands are so much better.

It's not something I would have properly noticed without the morph, I thought they actually were the same, but there was something about the original that felt more... bunny like?

It's like when sound designers add stuff they know people won't actually hear, but which definitely alters the "taste" of the sound.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago

Yeah, I was surprised too, I really thought the crop was going to line up. I ended up getting the nose and the watch as close as possible, but as you can see the head needed to be squashed into a little gremlin face.

[–] beastlykings 5 points 1 day ago

That's wild

[–] atomicbocks 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That’s not the same nose and the spots are gone. All this really tells me is that image was used to train.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's been AI upscaled, that's why the linework looks so funky.

Edit: no, see my reply to wugmeister

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 day ago

Just so you know this was not an accusatory message or stating anything, I was just pointing out a feeling that meme gave me

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Still better than quarter of.

What time is a "Quarter of 10"?

I could see it as 10:15, 9:45, 9:15, or 2:30. It's stupid, and anybody who uses it is wrong.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

The tenth hour of the day goes from 9:00 to 10:00.

So quarter of ten is 9:15. I don't know how one would explain the other possibilities, but this is the correct answer.

Imagine it as a glass of water that gets filled for each hour. Once it is full, the hour has been reached.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 14 hours ago

Except it's not. The actual answer is 9:45. It's a stupid way of describing time.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

A quarter of 10 would be 7:50.

(10-25%)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 hours ago

I would have intuitively said that it's 2.5.

I'll see myself out.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 13 hours ago

That's a quarter off ten. An all too common mistake.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 16 hours ago

Why do old people say that shit? They expect me to do math every time? Side note, I an American recently switched to using a 24 hour clock. It's way better.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago (4 children)

In Germany we say "dreiviertel acht" or "three quarter eight". This will irrationally enrage people from Northern Germany.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Noooo only Berliners say it like that, and as a northern light it enrages me as I have to convert it to a more sensical time format.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

It’s a thing in Bavaria as well. I’m trying to erase it from my vocabulary because I hate it too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Hungary has the same system. Or "half five" actually being 16:30. It's been hella fun getting used to "half five" meaning 17:30. Constant confusion.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

In Dutch you get fun stuff like 16.35 being vijf over half vijf, being 5 past half five. I'm sure German is similar in that regard.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Would ppl from Northern Germany say that was 6? That would be my way of calculating 3 quarter 8 :)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

Ah, good ole decimal time.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

7:15 is a quarter till half past 7:00.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

7:52 is half past a quarter to 8

[–] Mouselemming 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Wtf is 7:75? That would be 8:15. Quarter to eight is 7:45.

Or am I just super old and whooshing on the joke? Maybe it's an AI equivalent of eight fingers or two left hands?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yep, you wooshed the joke. Hint: ¾=75%

[–] Mouselemming 2 points 1 day ago

Well yes duh 75% is ¾ that much I got. So I guess the joke is AI wouldn't, because it hasn't learned to tell time, just as it's not sure about fingers...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

You brought rationality to an irrational topic. How dare you

[–] [email protected] -5 points 1 day ago

The AI could at least draw the watch correcting to the "joke"
