Running/Walking improves your mental health so much. I went from being down in the dumps regularly to being quite upbeat most of the time.
Yeah if you're out of shape just go for some walks. I have a dog so I have to take 3 walks a day. I could just take her to a patch of grass but she needs exercise too so I at least take her around the neighborhood.
All that to say, those little walks are sometimes the only part of the day where I can think and process my thoughts. I highly recommend going without headphones for that reason.
If you hate your sofa, get a huskie.
Exercise is definitely a good "try this first" for mental health, but at the same time, no amount of jogging is going to fix something you need medication or therapy for, or the fact that you exist in a capitalist hellscape.
capitalist hellscape
But the lakes of fire are so pretty
Remember when that actually happened? There's been so much bullshit since 2021 that I completely forgot about that time we set our ocean on fire until you mentioned it just now.
...but you're not wrong, it is beautiful in its own terrifying kind of way.
Itβs certainly not going to be a cure all, but it is a part of many aspects that can help improve our mental health. A therapist may encourage clients to engage in activities that are generally healthy, such as regular exercise (perhaps a short walk, just to have some outside time and a break from whatever mental spiral may be taking place).
Our problems donβt always solve themselves in one hour sessions, itβs also about what we do outside of the sessions to try and supplement our journey towards better mental health. Not to mention, in a capitalist hellscape, many donβt have the time or finances for therapy or medicines. And a walk is sort of free. Why not?
I run frequently but sometimes I feel super low energy and the motivation isnβt there. Then my mood worsens when I stop running. Despite how it feels, once I force myself to finally go on a run, my mood improves instantly and I have to hold onto that to remind myself why itβs best to keep it as a regular habit.
It really, really makes a difference.
Running can do wonders to your mental health, but you need to start as soon as the people who make you depressed try to start a conversation with you.
What if you're the person yourself?
Run head straight into a brick wall
The lost IQ points from doing this will probably gradually contribute to improved general mood over time.
Run faster. Soon all you can think about is how much it hurts to keep running.
Wear headphones while running?
Instructions unclear. Now in CrossFit cult
now your muscles are weird too!
Easy mistake, happens to the best of us.
For what it's worth the weather getting nice enough to pull my bike out has at least pulled the little switch in my head from 'let's lay here in the fetal position' to 'let's go out and fucking do something today'.
Like, me and my dog are taking a hike today. Completely unrelated and something I could've done a month ago but doing a bit of exercise cleared a mental hurdle for me.
Can focus on being sore instead of whatever you were depressed about.
Legitimately.
It does help a lot, but as you get more fit, you'll find you have to push yourself harder to get the good feelings. Now I'll be in the middle of a jog and find myself getting distracted by anxieties if I'm not pushing myself hard enough.
Still always worth through, even if my legs constantly hurt now lol.
But Iβm tired grandpa
That's too damn bad!
Finally, som advice that actually works!
Iβm always envious of the fatties, lording their capacity for adipose development over and around me. Meanwhile, I eat an uncomfortable amount to simply maintain my weight while doing cardio. Iβd trade metabolisms any day.
As someone who used to be skinny, and now, decidedly, isn't....
I'd take metabolism any day. That being said, I do have a friend who struggles to keep weight up due to a medical issue. Taking that dude to an all you can eat buffet is almost traumatizing, lol.
