I want a damn track ball instead of a right stick. Precise aiming movements and easier on the thumbs.

It would look like a standard Xbox or Playstation controller, only instead of a right analog stick, there would be a trackball.
Still using and loving my good old steam controller
Wish I'd bought a bunch when they were on clearance.
Me too, I have never had a better controller. That thing was durable as hell, took about six years to kill.
If they could take an Xbox One/Series SX controller and add in this order:
-
Gyroscope
-
Two extra face buttons (for fighting games)
-
a rotary dial
-
a trackball (both primarily for retro games that use them)
-
a touchpad (or even better a touch screen)
-
HD Rumble
without making the controller uncomfortable, that would be ideal to me.
The DualSense (PS5) controller is already as good as I could ever think of, including the adaptive trigger system being an actually awesome gimmick. Maybe have a more Nintendo-ish D-pad? I'm not a fan of the diamond, or the Xbox one. Gimme that straight +.
If they made a PS5 controller that could last more than a year I'd be alright with it but they are just e-waste after about a year. I don't want to throw my money at Sony just end up buying more planed obsolescent garbage.
The best thing about the PS controllers is its control stick symmetry, I hate Xbox like cock eyed controllers and their inverse button placement. Not only is it ugly as hell but ergonomically uncomfortable to use.
Mine are on two years and the original controllers. I don’t play for hours on end daily though. I do play several hours a week though.
I play a lot. If I hadn't had a steam controller that lasted six years I probably wouldn't have such high expectations.
Like an Xbox controller but with two extra buttons alongside the ABXY buttons so it's more natural to play Sega Genesis and N64 games
Maybe make them white and black as an homage to the old controller Duke or S controllers
I still have and use an Xbox360 controller despite not having an Xbox. The fact that it takes AA batteries and I can just pop out my rechargeable ones and swap 'em onto a generic charger instead of having to hook the controller up to a special charger (and then wait / use it with cable) is quite nice.
If I could get an OG Xbox duke, but with the modern button arrangement (bumpers and triggers), I think I'd be in heaven
Wait omfg what
Edit: doesn't change the button arrangement, but still—I'm getting one
Edit 2: wait it does! It just has the original buttons too
You've made my day mate
No worries friend! Hope it's everything you dreamed of.
Oh man someone else who likes the duke.
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
I never understood the hate. I was part of the Microsoft team that got to play with all of the prototype controllers (I still have a few). Several of us pushed for the size of the Duke, but we were all guys with HUGE hands. We wanted the Dreamcast controller but bigger.
Hard to believe it's been 20 years already.
Here it goes:
- Xbox Stick Layout
- Grip buttons
- Haptic Triggers
- Electronic Gyro on Batteries, Mechanical Gyro on Cable
- Center Touchpad
- Hall Effect Sensor on Sticks
- Pressure Sensitive Face Buttons
- Membrane Shoulder Buttons (no clicking)
I want an iPhone controller that attaches to the back and is a slide-out design. Think the PSP Go.
Oh you’re an absolute beauty. This is exactly what I’m thinking of!
EDIT: It does look super super thick though. Maybe generation 2 would be as thick as the phone.
My use case is a little unusual, my PC is hooked up to my tv and gets used for watching some movies and TV and such in addition to gaming
I'd like it to have some sort of slide out keyboard, a scroll wheel, and a trackpad or trackball so that it's more useable for general PC navigation, and maybe some media control buttons-play/pause, skip, etc.
I'd also like volume controls, and if I dare to dream big maybe an IR blaster to control my TV and AV receiver with some power and input buttons.
I think a trackball instead of a right stick would be nice for precise aiming but sometimes I'd like it to act like a joystick so maybe some kind of sensor ring around the edge of it to detect when my thumb is at the edge to keep it moving that direction like a joystick or maybe both a stick and a ball
6 face buttons instead of the now standard 4. I emulate some retro games and it would be nice for N64 and Genesis games. Mapping those buttons to a joystick or shoulder buttons or whatever just doesn't feel right, and I'd probably come up with some macros or something to map them to for other games
However it's implemented, I'd want to be able to have 4 controllers connected at once, and the ability to play and charge at the same time
Some sort of charging dock or at least wireless charging built it would be nice
And if we really want to get wild with it, let's make it split in half with the necessary sensors and speaker and such for Wii and switch emulation and to use as VR controllers
Trying to cram all of that into an affordable, usable, attractive controller is probably a pipe dream, but that's my theoretical ideal
Controllers that have a solid basic layout and feature back buttons and track pads like the Steam Controller and Steam Deck (not in the center like the Play Station - that is not as ergonomic).
Ideally, analog paddles+buttons and hall effect sensors too.
The pads and back buttons on the steamdeck are incredible.
