I mean that's swell, but he doesn't have that power either way.

Who the fuck cares what this dude is saying today?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 16 hours ago

Mangione mentioned him specifically, apparently

[–] [email protected] 172 points 2 days ago (2 children)

In a lengthy Substack article — which he titled “A Manifesto Against For-Profit Health Insurance Companies” — Moore wrote that Mangione’s alleged mention of him has resulted in requests for the director to comment. “It’s not often that my work gets a killer five-star review from an actual killer,” he wrote. “My phone has been ringing off the hook which is bad news because my phone doesn’t have a hook. Emails are pouring in. Text messages. Requests from many in the media.”

Moore went on to write that many of the requests inquired whether he would condemn the murder of Thompson. “After the killing of the CEO of United HealthCare, the largest of these billion dollar insurance companies, there was an immediate OUTPOURING of anger toward the health insurance industry,” Moore wrote. “Some people have stepped forward to condemn this anger. I am not one of them.”

He went on to write that the anger is completely justified, and that “it is long overdue for the media to cover it. It is not new. It has been boiling. And I’m not going to tamp it down or ask people to shut up. I want to pour gasoline on that anger.”

Moore added that “yes, I condemn murder, and that’s why I condemn America’s broken, vile, rapacious, bloodthirsty, unethical, immoral health care industry and I condemn every one of the CEOs who are in charge of it and I condemn every politician who takes their money and keeps this system going instead of tearing it up, ripping it apart, and throwing it all away.”

It's hard to imagine the guy who directed the music video for Rage Against the Machine's Sleep Now In The Fire saying anything else.

[–] [email protected] 78 points 2 days ago

10/10 response. Especially the "Yes I condemn murder part" where he flips their stupid question on it's head.

[–] [email protected] 38 points 2 days ago

Whoa, I've seen that video several times, but had no clue Moore directed it. Now it seems so obvious, in hindsight.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Surprised this isn't considered "advocating violence".

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Oh, he condemns murder. He just points out how much blood is on the hands of companies vs the lone gunman. I figure it won't be long before LW stops federating with the influx of users who left LW to go to other instances where people can actually express protected speech. /c/news at LW is inherently incompatible with free speech and free press ideals. Hoping y'all start a new community elsewhere that allows proper discourse.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

I mean was there any doubt that what happened to the CEO was murder? Like whether or not it was justified it still was murder. I'm not shedding a tear for it though, too busy reflecting on the thousands dead from his denial of healthcare.

The issue I take is that when we abstract murder by a few degrees then we just call it business. The CEO can sign a form that will result in the deaths of 1500 people and it's fine but you hire a hitman and you're guilty. At what point is the line drawn?

If I construct a rube goldberg machine that results in a gun being fired then am I responsible? What if that machine drops a pachinko puck that results in the gun being fired 50% of the time? What if I muck about with someone's food and increase their risk of cancer by 4%?

This is a genuine question I'd love an answer to.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

The European mods actively said they don’t agree with free speech and their countries laws don’t allow any kind of advocation of violence. I got banned from world.

I hope Luigi is just the first. These parasites have it coming.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

It would be preferable that it didn't come to that, but unfortunately we all know it's very likely going to have to.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 16 hours ago

The European mods actively said they don’t agree with free speech

Uno reverse them and tell them to shut the fuck up then.

[–] [email protected] 99 points 2 days ago

Headline grossly misconstrues Moore's opinion:

And I’m not going to tamp it down or ask people to shut up. I want to pour gasoline on that anger.

He's been on a roll since 1989 with Roger and Me, the hell do you mean "lately"?

[–] the_crotch 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Didn't hear shit from him during the Obama admin, even as Obama continued to do all of the things Moore criticized Bush for.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 14 hours ago

Capitalism: A Love Story and Where to Invade Next came out at the start of Obama's era and the end, respectively, and both offer some criticisms of Obama. Of course, Fahrenheit 11/9 really lays into him, particularly because of Obama's stunt in Flint, Michigan where he boldly tricked people into drinking the local water.

You didn't hear shit because you didn't watch his other movies.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Moore was way to the left of Obama and always has been. What you want, him to get up on stage at every moderate and right winger and shout "I'm still correct and more progressive that you are" to prove he's consistent?

Dude hasn't changed what he does since the beginning, maybe pay attention.

[–] the_crotch -4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If the Iraq war, gitmo, the Patriot act, etc were problems under Bush then they were problems under Obama too. But for some reason Michael Moore was MIA during the Obama administration. He straight up disappeared for 8 years. That tells me he didn't have a problem with those things, he had a problem with who was doing them. They're fine as long as a Democrat is pushing the button. Fuck Michael Moore.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

I wouldn’t go as far as to say fuck Michael Moore, but I’d say all of the things you point out the entire liberal ecosystem was guilty of during Obama’s terms - and Biden’s too. It’s like the man could do no wrong despite doing a 180 on what he got elected on. The fact that liberals refused to hold Obama accountable is why we got trump in 2016. They doubled down with it being her turn despite the fact she was even more conservative and a warmonger than Obama (factually, Hillary voted for the Iraq war, Obama didn’t, both were democrat senators at the time).

Liberals only care about accountability when the other team is in charge. Omg there’s children in cages! (biden keeps those kids in cages, not a peep from liberals)

[–] the_crotch 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

What's really infuriating is that you're not allowed to criticize Obama or Biden in a lot of these spaces without people accusing you of both-sidesing or supporting trump. Two things can be bad without being equally bad. This country has lost all sense of nuance.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 16 hours ago

Honestly they are equally bad in different ways. Every successive government since 9/11 and perhaps even before has expanded the security state at the expense of our rights. The popularization of using executive orders to go around congress and the authorization of all sorts of military operations outside of congress is again, a both parties thing. The lack of checks and balances on our government and real representation is how we ended up here… it was obvious from the passage of the patriot act to me (and the subsequent failure of Obama, trump and biden to do anything about it) that one day a tyrant will use it to fully implement fascism. Look at how the security state - under biden - is responding to Luigi - would they do that for any other murder? No, they wouldn’t. Look at how democrat NY gov hochul is gonna set up a special crisis hotline for scared CEOs. Why isn’t she doing that for anyone else? Rhetorical question. Look at how biden pardoned the cash for kids judge (truly despicable wtf was he thinking) and left the climate science lawyer to rot? Look at how biden kept kids in cages and Obama kept prisoners in torture conditions at Guantanamo. The democrats are the banality of evil, the republicans are simply more overt and have their fascism in the National-Christian variety, also known as nat-c, aka christofascists. The democrats are technofascist - look at Obama’s cozy relationship with big tech and subsequent high tech surveillance state expanded under him with even more power for agencies such as the NSA… look at the social media algorithm manipulation that’s been going on since it started - under every admin. And now the US is blocking Chinese run tik tok - can’t have US spooks controlling a foreign run algorithm like they do in the US. The republicans are just the vanguard for fascism and the democrats backstop any reform towards the ever increasing right wing swing.

Maybe it was something else, like he was working on other projects, taking time off, or traveling.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I read this as "Moore on that later".

Canadian Bacon is a highly underrated film. I rarely have the opportunity to bring that up.

[–] anomnom 3 points 1 day ago

Now edit your post to add it en français.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago

Any news source to even consider that they could/should is part of the problem.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Also the director of "Canadian Bacon".

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Also "Fahrenheit 9/11".
