The biggest thing you can do to make your property a target for theft is advertise you're into guns.

Criminals love stealing guns. Especially since some people keep thousands of dollars worth of guns sprinkled around their house, and gun owners like this are unlikely to write down/register serial numbers.

It's also insanely easy to fence them. There is a robust used market and resources to advertise anonymously and they hold value well.

The only thing stupider would be something like:

The only reason I don't own more guns is my wife loves diamonds. I also inherited a large amount of bearer's bonds and don't believe in safety deposit boxes.

There's a reddit sub that is a bit 4chan, everytime someone posts their stupid bugout truck the most upvoted comment is 'when the zombie Apocalypse happens I'm going for you first because I know you have guns and supplies'.

It's one of the only things I miss about reddit, they were bonkers in a usually entertaining way.

It's like the billionaires that build huge apocalypse bunkers and plan to staff them with servants and private military contractors...

If the apocalypse hits the staff would mutiny in days/weeks.

I think that's why there's such a big push to AI. The rich know slaves eventually rebel. And Skynet while possible is less likely than a slave revolt.

That would never happen to spez because 'I’m a pretty good leader. I will probably be in charge, or at least not a slave, when push comes to shove.”

I never get tired of that article.

Spez, you are absolutely the first one against the wall.

Yhe best thing to be in a collapse scenario is the random who minds their own business and gets shit done. Nobody is gonna trust the glory hound with an overly inflated ego, but the dude who just wants thing organized so they can start manufacturing tools is probably the most trustworthy.

They have plans for that like making their security guards wear disciplinary collars. I’m not kidding.

That's why they bought basically all of Lānaʻi: the whole island is their bunker, and it's got a 9-mile-wide moat just to the nearest other Hawaiian island, let alone to North America or Asia.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Where is there food going to come from?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

Lānaʻi itself, probably. It's got a ridiculously low population density and the entire island used to be the world's largest pineapple plantation. Also, fishing in the surrounding waters.

Annoyingly, it's a pretty ideal solution to that issue, too.

Open carry folks are also more likely to be robbed on the street, for the gun lmao

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Is that actually so? So they get robbed disproportional often?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago

Yeah, you can probably find a study to back it up

But it's a well known joke even in gun communitie that those are just "rob me stickers".

Anyone with those stickers is an idiot with a gun. So rational people avoid them and the owners think it's because they're tough. Meanwhile criminals check to see if there's a gun in it when it's unoccupied or follow them home and rob them when the truck (it's always a truck) is gone.

It’s fascinating seeing people who might as well have big signs on the backs of their vehicles that say “hey! My house is full of expensive stuff and I’m gone on the weekends!”

Highly relevant DefCon talk - No-Tech Hacking.

[–] [email protected] 57 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Is this even technically theft? Seems like more of a "free samples, please take one" situation lol

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago

"Your honor, most people read it as 'come and take it 😈'

But one could also assume it's 'come and take it 🙇‍♂️'

So technically they did."

I wonder if it could be argued like the whole welcome mat thing.

I don't remember where it was but someone got their house broken into and the burglar got away with it in court because the homeowner had a welcome mat and that was used as justification for entering.

This planet desperately needs purged.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

That sounds like an old wives tale...

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 month ago

Oh vampire rules!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

That's why I have this for my "welcome" mat...
