I read the article. This is what the “debate” is:

Experts: This is objectively horrible, and does not replace human interaction, and is probably harmful.

Meta: This is awesome and therapeutic. Now give us monies!

The AI stuff just gets in the way. I can't get it to come up the few times I've wanted to try it, but every time I don't want it, it seems to find its way onto the screen. The only thing I have found cool was the ability to make Memoji, but it's basically broken; you can't effectively give it an image to base off of, and not once have I gotten it to create anything close to what I was after.

EDIT: This article is spot on. And it makes me sad. And there aren’t even any better alternatives for my use case.
