I know [email protected] exists, but I’ve blocked lemmy.ml…

Are there any alternatives?

Edit: [email protected] exists, lol, I should have searched better.

Anyways I guess I’ll keep this post up if anyone needs in future.

🌐 Instances to look through

You can find communities from specific instances

A great way to find lesser known communities is to look at the /communities page on an instance. Different instances may have different themes or focuses, and so you can find related communities that way.

For example: https://lemmy.ca/communities

  • pangora.social: Great way to find instances related to a particular topic. This is also great for picking an instance when first making an account/moving accounts.
  • awesome-lemmy-instances

The list of apps is pretty out of date. For example, Boost already came out and [email protected] is a pretty popular extension. I use it a lot to make posts, and just used it to open that post on my instance.

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected], [email protected]

5

You may intuitively believe that large instances are the best place to start a new community, since that's where most people are.

The good news is it's viable to start a community on any instance, provided you take some steps to ensure that content propagates to the large ones too.

How Lemmy content federation works

A Lemmy instance will automatically receive federated content from any community on the Fediverse, as long as at least one its users has subscribed to that community. This content is visible when you click on "All" on the main menu:

For example, the content I post to [email protected] automatically propagates to the likes of lemmy.world and lemm.ee since both of those instances have at least one user that has subscribed to it.

Making your community visible

To ensure that your content propagates to the large instances, you need to have at least one subscriber from those instances. There are several ways you can go about this.

The quickest is to create a user on each instance you want to reach and subscribe to your community from there. This is easier than it sounds and gives you the added benefit of having your identity preserved there too.

If that feels like too much hassle, I am happy to help you out by subscribing to your community from a few of the largest instances. Send me a message with the details.

Another option is to try posting in communities that are dedicated to discovering new communities:

Choosing the right instance to host your community

What's most important is choosing a reliable instance that you resonate with. How many users the instance already has is not that relevant and can be a poor indicator of reliability (see the disappearance of vlemmy.net).

Pick an instance that is open about how it operates and what its principles are. The more you know, the better informed your decision.

Why bother with all this when I can just create my community on lemmy.world?

There are many benefits to venturing out into the Fediverse:

  • You can pick an instance that more closely matches your style and beliefs.
  • A community with 100 members is a drop in the ocean on a large instance, but will likely be an important pillar for a small one.
  • The admins of a smaller instance are usually more accessible and care a bit more about what happens to your community.
  • Well run smaller instances are usually more reliable and perform better than large ones.
  • The name you want for your community is likely to be available on a smaller instance.
  • Smaller instances are not usually interesting targets for attacks or trolls.
  • Your content will get similar exposure thanks to federation.

I hope you found this post helpful, feel free to ask any questions you may still have.

Lemmy Help

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You're not really wrong, but this doesn't address what OP was asking as I understand them. For them to make the community they're interested in (e.g. Imaginary Knights), they would probably be better off making a new account in a more general instance, as this would be the most straightforward way to do so.

The alternative would be to see if someone else is interested by posting to a remote community (as they're doing now), and seeing if someone in the remote instance might want to make said community so they don't have to make multiple accounts. If memory serves, I think there may be specific communities in other instances (and maybe even one here) to request a community's creation, or if not, I know there are communities for asking if communities exist/help finding them.

E.g. [email protected]

OP, I might recommend looking around for more communities like the above & asking there or maybe searching via Lemmyverse (see sidebar) for whether the community exists on some other instance already.

Edit:
Also it appears my memory was working! There may be more named differently, but here's a few communities where you can request communities.

Então você se inscreveu em uma das muitas instâncias do Lemmy e agora deseja começar a ingressar nas comunidades nas quais está interessado.

Existem algumas maneiras de fazer isso...

Usando a página Comunidades:

Alguns deles:

There are a few 'new community' communities that you can announce in. Lots of people are checking them right now:

if you have any questions about finding or subscribing to these federated communities, [email protected] has some good posts like this one: https://sh.itjust.works/post/124476

9

So you signed up on one of many Lemmy instances, and now you want to start joining communities you are interested in.

There are a few ways to do so...

Using the Communities page:

The most obvious one... Communities link at the top of the page.
Once you are on the Communities page, you will see 3 tabs:

  • Subscribed - obvious enough
  • Local - communities that are made on your instance
  • All - a bit misleading because these are not actually all communities, but rather all communities that have been fetched by your instance so far.

Browsing the front page:

More specifically, browsing the front page with the filter set to All (Subscribed | Local | All)
If you are on a fairly popular instance, you will most likely run into posts from all kinds of new communities as other people from your instance fetch them.

Using the community browsers:

These websites index communities across all instances, and you can use them to search for remote communities.

In order to subscribe to or even see remote communities (communities hosted on other instances), they have to be fetched by your instance.

How to fetch them:

  • Copy the link to the community you want to fetch.
  • Go to the Communities page on your instance and set the filter to All.
  • Paste the link in the search field and click the Search button.
  • When the text saying "No results" under the Search button disappears, that means that the community has been successfully fetched by your instance (it can take a bit longer to fetch it, especially if the instance is overloaded).
  • That's it! Now you can delete the URL from the search field and find the community by its name.

Browsing the communities that promote new communities:

There are a few different communities that you can use to find new and interesting ones.
Some of them:

Browsing Kbin magazines (communities):

Process of subscribing to Kbin magazines is the same as subscribing to remote Lemmy communities.
If you go to https://kbin.social/magazines (or any other kbin instance and add /magazines at the end), you can browse and search for magazines.
To subscribe to one of them, follow the "How to fetch them" instruction from above.

I'm actually hoping that in a few months, once things calm down and people have a good idea how things work, papercuts are fixed and communities stabilize, that we have a good mix of topic instances and regional instances, and people go to the communities on instances specialising in them.

In other words, I'm hoping that people stop treating lemmy.ml as the "main" instance, and go to places like https://lemmy.pineapplemachine.com for gaming communities, https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech for music artist & genre communities, https://lemmy.studio for music creation and instrument communities, https://pathfinder.social for pathfinder stuff, etc etc.

TL;DR: It's understandable that people are going crazy with communities right now, but I honestly hope that the "main" communities that eventually win out are on instances specialising in them.

With the ongoing large influx, I was thinking that it might be nice to have some instructions for new users pinned across instances' front pages, not only to be more welcoming and help with the learning curve, but also to maybe direct people to less popular instances. Something like this post, but more detailed. I wrote a draft below—any thoughts on the idea or the instructions?

How to Join Lemmy and Find and Subscribe to Communities

(These instructions are for using Lemmy in a browser. If you are using an app, some steps may differ.)

How to Join Lemmy

To use Lemmy, you need to be a member of one instance from the list at https://join-lemmy.org/instances. You will still be able to see content from anywhere, but the instance you choose will determine:

  • What URL you use to log in to Lemmy,
  • What content shows on the homepage when you select "Local" or "All",
  • Who moderates your instance, and
  • What rules you agree to when you sign up.

Choose an instance that matches your interests, language, and region. (If you want more information about an instance, you can tap its "Join" button, which will show you its current homepage in the main view and its description in the sidebar.) Please avoid joining instances that are already crowded.

Once you have decided on an instance, tap its "Join" button to open it and then tap "Sign Up" in the upper-right corner. Fill out the form and wait for your account to be approved.

When your account is approved, log in and customize your profile and settings. If you change your language settings, select "Undetermined" in addition to any languages you speak so that you can still see posts and comments that are not tagged as being in any particular language.

How to Find and Subscribe to Communities

There are two ways to find communities through Lemmy:

  1. To browse communities that others in your instance are already subscribed to, tap the "Communities" tab at the top of the page and choose the "All" scope. Tapping on a community name will open it through your instance.

  2. To browse communities across all instances, visit https://browse.feddit.de/. Tapping on the community's name will open it, but probably not through your instance (in which case the page will say that you are not logged in). Instead, follow these steps:

    a. Copy the community's URL. You can either use the copy button next to the community name or else open the community outside your instance and copy the URL from your address bar.

    b. In your instance, tap on the "🔍 Search" button in the upper toolbar.

    c. Make sure that you have chosen "All" for each of the four filters: "Type", "Scope", "Community", and "Creator".

    d. Paste the community's URL into the search field and tap "Search".

    e. One of the results should be the community shown as an icon, a name, and a subscriber count. If you do not see it, or it is buried too deep in the search results, try changing "Scope" to "Local". If that does not work, you may need to wait a bit and try again.

    f. Tap on the community in the search results to open it in your instance.

Once a community is open in your instance, subscribe to it by tapping on the "Subscribe" button at the top of the sidebar.

Can't find a community you're looking for? Subscribe to [email protected] and make a post about what you're looking for. Or, if it doesn't exist yet, and your instance allows it, create the community yourself.
