Last weekend a friend told me that they're involved in an activist group that focuses on political education for people with learning disabilities and severe mental health issues. The activists' reasoning is that this group of people is very susceptible to fascist narratives, and prone to social isolation when they start adopting or simply repeating fascist world views.

Fascists of course have no trouble claiming that support as validation for their politics, and votes are votes, after all. One could even argue that fascist propaganda inherently targets people with reduced intellectual capabilities.

This post made me think of that.

That's not just an argument, that's fact. Fascists and Republicans (yeah yeah, "same picture") both actively campaign to the unintelligent and/or uneducated. Fear is a primal emotion and they love to stoke it

After he won the Nevada Republican caucuses in 2016, the current President crowed his victory. “We won with young. We won with old. We won with highly educated. We won with poorly educated. I love the poorly educated.” Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA) reflected on this comment as he asked Republicans to join Democrats in preserving the Department of Education.

they also try very hard to make sure people remain and become uneducated, hence why schools suck even worse in places that have been right wing for a long time

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No doubt that they do. I'm just not sure if it's productive to say that this is an inherent characteristic to fascist propaganda, or if that's trivializing the issue, since many intelligent and educated people are also drawn to it. Minor point of distinction though, I grant you that.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Absolutely it’s productive, and important. Also maybe I have the barest semblance of standards but it’s essentially a requirement to be at least a little fucking stupid in order to support right-wing policies.

Also, if you go off about how having a university degree and/or having specialized knowledge in one or a couple things is equal to general intelligence and the kind which enables solid critical thinking skills then I have bad news about which side you may likely fall on. I know many people good at their little tasks who are ultimately not people I fully trust to make good decisions on their own.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

We're talking about intelligence here, a concept that comes with a lot of baggage, so I agree that it's good to be precise. Critical thinking skills and good decision-making is definitely part of what I meant when I posted my comment.

In my opinion, your use of the term is in danger of

  1. essentializing intelligence: "This fascist may have a good education and specialized skills, but they are not in and of themselves intelligent." I think it's better to think of intelligence as a contingent and situational social effect rather than as an inherent property of a person.
  2. becoming a tautology: "Intelligent people could never support this, therefore I know that all fascists are stupid." This type of argument just dosn't hold.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that fascism appeals to the uneducated and unintelligent, but it would be a mistake to reduce it to a function of intellect, or an "ideology of the stupid". There's plenty of dangerous, sincere fascists who are quite intelligent in all useful meanings of the word.

Also maybe I have the barest semblance of standards but it’s essentially a requirement to be at least a little fucking stupid in order to support right-wing policies.

Hypothetically, I think it's possible for a person to support right-wing policies (in a nutshell: policies that enforce social hierarchies) without being even a little fucking stupid, if (a) they actually are at the top of said hierarchy (in actual reality, not their own delusion), and (b) they're an absolute psychopath.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Yea I meant to add that on at the end and just didn’t.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 days ago

Have you ever argued with a tired, hangry toddler? There's no getting through to them, it's all impulse and feeling, lashing out at everyone even if you're trying to help them. I don't know why that just came to my mind...

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There's a study that says conservatives are less intelligent over all, I'll try to find it.

To be clear, he should be jailed for that massacre of the language alone. There's probably a lot of other charges that would stick as well.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 days ago

Yeah it's free speech not free "incoherent screeching"

[–] [email protected] 34 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That dude has used biker meth more often than deodorant.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 days ago (2 children)

What's the difference between biker meth and regular meth?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 days ago (3 children)

“Biker meth” is most if not all meth now. It uses phenyl-2-propanone as the starting point and produces a racemic mixture of dextromethamphetamine and levomethamphetamine.

Traditional clandestine meth production using ephedrine produces pure dextromethamphetamine.

d-methamphetamine is the euphoric feel good stuff. l-methamphetamine is the racing heart, more neurotoxic, nearly immediate psychosis stuff.

TL;DR - “Biker meth” is most meth now. It’s much worse for you and less enjoyable.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Fun fact: This is explained in Breaking Bad. ... not the chemical breakdown (IIRC, so thanks for that!) but the difference in production.

Wonder if it made any impact on the popularity or still just tighter controls on ephedrine.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Just tighter controls on ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. Any dumbass can make it in the bathroom easily with homemade lab equipment using ephedrine, so a lot of law and law enforcement crackdowns have centered on that.

I haven’t seen the show in a long time and never finished it, but from what I remember, later in the show they ditch both methods and move on to methylamine. Going that route would also allow production of isolated d-methamphetamine.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Good to know. I'll keep that in mind.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

When you're... comparison shopping for meth sources? 😂

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

But longer lasting so you're getting more bang for your buck! Plus there's all the neat organ damage.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Based on my extensive knowledge of watching Breaking Bad, I'd say the answer is purity.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Nah, Walt's blue meth was because he used the "biker meth" way. Assumedly, his was pure enough to still be good meth.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 days ago

It's like they had caps lock on, and only when they tried to capitalize America did they realize it.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Comma splices and 'outher'? Definitely bigot. These people pluralize 'email' with an S, despite it being a mass noun. They're sick.

[–] ayyy 4 points 2 days ago

You really think it’s correct to say “I sent three email today”???!

A lot of them hate Trump this time around though.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Uh what? Also trump cannot run again if any rules are respected

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

I mean, it's VERY clear by now that rules are not respected. By Drumpf or republicans.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I convinced some of them under an alt to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala because it would kick off race war.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well, that clearly worked.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Well they did vote for them.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I always thought it was wild that the Klan is so vehemently against Jews, yet, they worship Christ, who was raised Jewish himself.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

One of the Christian Identity white supremacists has this awful podcast, and he has episodes titled "Why Jesus is not a Jew", and "Hitler was a Christian"

[–] imsufferableninja 6 points 3 days ago

Hitler was definitely a Christian
