To be fair, Janet Mills is a Democrat and Maine is a mostly left-leaning state. If this headline were about their Republican Senator Susan Collins, fair enough, but Maine is currently being sued because Mills stood up to Trump.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 23 hours ago (4 children)

Yeah but more broadly the country elected a deranged incoherent fascistic narcissistic reality tv show host to their highest office - twice who has threatened to annex Canada and has tens of millions of sycophants. So, no one from there gets a pass really.

Totally agree. There was a woman in need of an emergency abortion due to an ectopic pregnancy, but her state had outlawed abortions, so she coulden't get one and died. She didn't vote for Trump, or any Republican for that matter, but it's just like, she deserved it anyway. No one gets a pass afterall.

Reminds me of those kids in Gaza. Sure, they may not have even been old enough to vote Hamas into power, but no one gets a pass.

massive /s for anyone who didn't pickup mypoint by now.

Now SCOTUS is going after contraception. MAGA I guess 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️🤷

[–] [email protected] 18 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Trump's harm needs to be pointed out. Governors have a natural podium for doing so. They should be cheered for this.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, Trump illegally froze Maine's funding because it's a blue state and Mills wouldn't sell out trans kids, but if you want to be super reductive, sure, fuck 'em I guess. Fuck all those protesters getting their shit kicked in by the LAPD for opposing ICE too, I suppose. That's what you get for living in the wrong country!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly? It sounds like an internal problem and supporting any part of that country leads to further threats to our sovereignty.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Right, I'm not objecting to the drop in tourism. That's completely justified and understandable. I wouldn't come here either. But the meme is singling out a blue state whose governor is actively fighting back. If they were mocking a right-wing freak like Ron DeSantis whining because Florida tourism was tanking, I'd be on board. Hell, if it was mocking the United States as a whole I'd say we collectively had it coming. But to mock one of Trump's enemies who's getting fucked by Trump's decisions is dumb.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

I mean, there's ongoing court cases about possible election interference, but go off I guess

It implies that the election was stolen.

You know, like in the corollary to the concept of the Big Lie, "accuse your opponent of what you plan to do?"

Pretty simple logic chain there when your core premise is "mock people for something they didn't do"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

This sounds like a problem that could have been solved in 2021, 22, or 23.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Feel free to yell at Biden about it, I do too, but wouldn't you also complain about people not having voted for FemBiden who was going to do the exact same thing about Trump as he did, nothing?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 19 hours ago

Not just Biden. And don't blame Harris either with that shitty "FemBiden" bullshit.

Every. Last. American. Who. Didn't. Push. For. Congress. To. Prosecute. Is. Responsible.

You as a Nation had years to deal with this and enforce your own laws.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 20 hours ago

If you think court is gonna stop a fascist then I have some WMDs in Iraq to sell you.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If it was only a trade war I think you’d still see Canadians visiting the US. The real issue is ICE. No tourist wants to visit countries where they stand a good chance of arbitrary arrest.

I think a lot of Canadians took notice when Jasmine Mooney was arrested.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

Yeah especially for crap they might have on their phone 🙄🙄🙄

[–] [email protected] 56 points 1 day ago

If it was a trade war it could be excused. But Trump repeatedly threatens Canada every chance he gets.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Is New England really to blame for this? Sure, their union is getting sketchy, but aren't those states more liberal and chill than others?

Ignorant Middle European here, please educate if wrong

[–] Voroxpete 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What you need to understand is that this drop in tourism is not only driven by a refusal to send money to a country that has shown utter contempt for us (and remember, any dollar spent anywhere in the US goes towards federal taxes), but also by genuine concerns over our safety. To go to Maine we still have to cross a border run by the feds, and risk harassment (or worse) by Trump's thugs. ICE are storming around the country rounding up whoever the fuck they like with no regard to any kind of legal process.

Why bother risking if? Why go to any part of that shithole? I might as well vacation in North Korea. No matter how deep blue the state, you're still going to find people there who voted for that psychopath, twice in many cases. I just can't think of a good reason to vacation there rather than go to a civilised country... Or just stay home. New Brunswick is fucking beautiful, plenty to do around here, and Nova Scotia or Quebec are just as far as Maine. Or we could hop on a plane and finally go see BC.

[–] Disaster 2 points 1 day ago

True, in NK you actually have to do something in order to get into trouble. Beyond that as I understand it, you're largely chaperoned around.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 22 hours ago

Maybe New England should declare independence. That would solve the problem. Until then, federal agents are free to operate within their borders.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The Maine Governor can go tell Trunp to stop threatening our sovereignty. Canada’s not going back. Probably for generations.

[–] Estiar 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The maine Governor is pretty based. She's currently in defiance against Trump's executive orders targeting civil rights for some citizens and is fighting them in court

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Cool, best of luck to her. Still not going to the US this decade, if ever again.

Edit: the problem with america is NATIONAL, Maine isn't spared from what can happen to me for just being there.

You don't like what I've said, tough. I don't like allied countries threatening my country's sovereignty.

Oh and just because maine is "blue" doesn't meant there isn't maga there.

Edit 2: I truly love getting downvoted because I didn't go all rainbow and puppies.

[–] Estiar 2 points 17 hours ago

Yo. I don't blame you. Border crossings are twice as hazardous and the US Government is hostile to foreigners. If I weren't American, I would think that too. As is, I kinda want to flee to Scotland

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

Yeah fuck that. A mari usque ad mare.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

While yes New England is generally blue, we need to pressure New Hampsire (red) and Vermont (divided) to get rid of their republicans.

[–] boydster 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

We are trying in NH, the governor might be a Republican but we've got Dems in the senate and house that are on the right side of history even if I hope to see more progressive candidates replace them soon.

New England purple is the most reasonable purple, if you ask me. I'm not biased, you are.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The fact that NH motto is "live free or die" and yet it's the only place within like 1000 miles in any direction you can still get in shit over a joint is laughable

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

NH is the weirdest, most inconsistent state in New England policy and law wise. Transgender rights are especially bizarre. They tried to ban us from bathrooms a few times and yet their transgender medicaid policies are some of the best in the country, covering electrolysis, which is fairly rare in the US, and even covers some cosmetic procedures like breast augmentation.
Vermont is weird similarly, having a significant amount of republicans and yet being one of the most progressive states in the country. New England states feel like they're having a perpetual identity crisis politics wise.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

It's because the south is VERY Democrat but the north is full of republican rednecks which skews the electoral map

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Get rid of maga and we’ll talk hoser!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

See that’s the thing. If Trump leaves, someone who is not maga might take over for four to eight years but then another trump-like magat will get back in and pick up where he left off. That person will probably be younger and smarter, so able to do more damage and maybe try harder to annex Canada. It’s too risky. Canada and the US are broken up - for good.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I'm worried about the quality of education, news and awareness of how dangerous things like fascism are

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

Good. That’s the point.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not Maine's fault lol But yeah, justified. Weird that people went to Maine in the first place tbh.

[–] Disaster 3 points 1 day ago

At this point, I'd consider going just to get away from everybody else.
