Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

It feels less in my control, and at least tells me what I say.

Great. Now I’m unsure of how to pronounce database as well.

Easy fix, just say datum five times fast

/ ˈdeɪ tə/, /ˈdæt ə /

/ ˈdeɪ təˌbeɪs /

The thing is I have multiple ways of saying database as well 😂

Same problem

People who say data are wrong, period. It's data and always will be.

[–] SonicBlue03 17 points 3 days ago

I agree. I've always said this.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

But is it pronounced "database" or "database"?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago

Database, obviously?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Uhhhhhh......that guy should see a doctor. His blood count is very low.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How many bloods should a healthy man have?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago

I don't know the correct answer, but I think some would be a good start.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I definitely say both depending on the sentence and how it feels coming off the tongue. I also alternate between the and thee. No idea why, but it happens organically.

Route as well. Depends largely on if I’m talking about routing Internet traffic or Route 66, though.

You say data, and I say data. Let's call the whole thing off.

It’s like when people pronounce mana like mana, it’s very annoying.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Pronounce like what? Mana-goose? Or Mana-in-the-middle?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

🎵life is unfaiiir. 🎶

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

And potato and tomato and strawberry and aliuminium.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Hana mean what mana mean and gana mean that too.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I had a comp sci teacher pronounce "data" and "database" differently. Drove me up a wall. I don't even care which way you say it, just make it the same ffs

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago

No he was right; it's data and database. 100%

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Bongers will say "dodderbase" unironically though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

metadata is the one that fucks me up

Listen, data is singular, and data is plural.

Data goes into a database. It's comprised of individual components of data.

You know it's true because you read this effortlessly.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Isn't data the plural of datum?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Not in English.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You say data and I say data…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Datum Data Date

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

I think you mean datumbase

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)
[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Don't caall meee daughta

-the database probably

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The only difference between daughta and daughter is the last letters

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

It's not Tesla it's Teslerrr

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (3 children)
[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I assume OP intended to force daytuh base, but I hear dada base fairly often. I don't know if it's more regional or more field related

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

I say it either way depending on how I feel at that moment, because people around me use different pronunciations so they all sound fine.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

There's no y in data or database. The only source of confusion is that Star Trek character weirdly dipthong-ing his name.
