I used to do a lot of interviewing of prospective hires at my last job (I'm a programmer). It was not at all uncommon to ask a candidate a question and then hear multiple voices whispering in the background along with frantic keyboard tapping sounds, and the candidate would take 5-10 seconds before answering. I just don't understand what their thought process was for even attempting this - it earned them an immediate "no further action".

I won't say what country all of these candidates were from. It would be obvious to anyone in this field.

We've had similar before. Interviewed multiple people and most of them were clearly in the same room.

Was reading a resume, and at the bottom is said something along the Iines of "Does this one look better Mom? I added a few closed businesses like you recommended."

It started kinda sweet but dumb, then quickly moved on to the "do not consider for future positions" list.

I added a few closed businesses like you recommended.

Lol. It's funny, the college I went to went belly up a few years back, and it occurred to me that I could basically say I had whatever degree I wanted to have on my resume and there'd be no easy way for an employer to check it out. I don't have a Computer Science degree, but I never found that to be the slightest hindrance to my career so I was never tempted to lie about my degree. With the way the CS field has gone tits up lately I would probably have to do something like that to even be considered for a job, but I'm a school bus driver now so I don't give a shit.

Cory Doctorow has a short story about this kind of surveillance hell, and the disproportionate damage it does to neurodivergent kids.

Yeah thaaaat's why I was feeling uneasy This would be funny if it triggered my ring doorbell cam. In this context it feels more like the woman who got an audio recording of her cab ride

That intro hooked me I'll have to listen later.

Can relate maybe. At my work there was layoffs years back, so if somebody is sick there might be only one person in the manufacturing building with no supervision.

Not legal so they tried to make us use man down radios which alarm if they get tilted. Small grace window to reset. Otherwise it'll blast an alarm across the site. Also have to push a button on it every hour, or, alarm. That happened twice until I refused to wear it and said they could fire me if it came down to it.

It was mental torture worrying about the fucking radio all the time.

I'm still here and nobody uses the radio anymore.

I'm so glad I went to school before laptops existed.

[–] ThePantser 91 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm so glad I did my finals in 2020 when my college was completely unprepared for the sudden switch to online. I was able to open book my whole last load of classes.

[–] [email protected] 133 points 1 day ago (2 children)

My academic institution took the more sensible approach of just making the exams open book, and adjusting the questions to demonstrate understanding and application of the concepts, rather than just recite stuff.

[–] [email protected] 67 points 1 day ago (1 children)

demonstrate understanding and application of the concepts, rather than just recite stuff

That's how it should be anyway. I suspect the only reason all schools don't do it that way is that it would cause too many students (and teachers) to fail.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You wouldn't believe how difficult they are to mark. The basic skills of penmanship and sentence construction have fallen through the floor. 20% of students in my last class didn't even attempt the short answer section on an exam that was otherwise multiple choice.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

What subject, and was it time limited? If there was any chance of not finishing in time I'd probably leave those until last.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 21 hours ago

Neuroscience and basically no time limit. 50 marks in a 3 hour night class and I tell them I'll stay as long as they need.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

Wasn't official policy but that's what I did for my class. It's the only reasonable way, except now I'm getting AI slop answers sometimes, which fortunately isn't too hard to spot.

[–] [email protected] 48 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Seriously school sounds like it fucking SUCKS now. School sucked when I was in high school but it seems like it REALLY sucks now

This country doesn't want to pay teachers so it's using technology to fill the gap. It's not being used to enhance the education. It's being used to keep costs low. It's like using a self checkout camera. Sure, some people will still steal stuff. You're not actually trying to prevent all of that. You're just trying to lower that amount of theft so it's less than hiring a cashier. The teachers suffer and the students suffer for it.

But this country is also not interested in having well educated people capable of critical thinking. I believe I'm paraphrasing Carlin now. But it just wants obedient workers.

Computer classes were AWESOME when we’re on Windows XP and they just taught basic computer skills and typing. I had a war for the desktop background with a kid from another class. They always switched it to something they wanted, but it was MY station, dangit!

…so I edited the registry to remove the background tab from display settings. I WIN!

I think it's easy to get caught up in the negative news that naturally floats to the top of most algorithms these days.

Primary and secondary schools are doing a lot more than they used to, and with an ever decreasing budget too. The quality of teaching is largely better, and the teaching career is becoming more "professionalised" by the year, for better or for worse - the constant wave of bureaucracy surround evidencing decision making and CPD is driving loads of great teachers away from the profession.

I've gone back to higher education and I've been surprised at the sheer range of support networks and services available to those who need them. I'm lucky enough to largely have my shit together (even if it is held together with sellotape, chewing gum, and prayers) - but there's not many places quite like this establishment where I could turn and access such a range of guidance and support nowadays. As usual though, most of these ideas and developments have been written in blood after failings have been exposed in the past, which is a huge shame. Even socio-economic barriers are starting to be broken down - I'm getting spanked monthly for tuition fees but I've applied for grants that I'm ethically not entitled to and I've been given them no questions asked.

That said, the problems are outside the school these days. Mobile phones and social media are the big driver of this - in my day (and I'm decidedly middle age - not young, not old) if you were having a hard time; getting grief off bullies; or made an embarrassing fuckup... that was it, it stopped at 3:15pm and it would have been old news by 9am. Now, shit follows you home and shit sticks when digital media exists of it. It's fucking horrendous from that aspect and I think now the genie is out of the bottle, only education and common sense can mitigate it - both of which are bottom of your interest list when you're in your teens!

In short, school experiences seem to be trending upwards, but outside of school is a lot more hairy.

As always, YMMV and I'm in the UK.

Wish I could say the same for America

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Ameeeericaaaaaaaa

DFBs early stuff was much better than Skibidi Toilet.

But yes, every country will have differing approaches to education and it's priority in the grand scheme of things. My personal opinion is that education and healthcare should be top any country's list but I'm not naive enough to think there's not... "competing pressures" on where to spend taxpayer money.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

Imagine high school with social media and deepfakes. I couldn’t be happier to have missed out on that.

It's amusing to me because back in 2006 when I went to college, I was the only person in class taking notes on my dinky 10" notebook laptop and I loved not having to carry around ridiculous amounts of bulky folders and paper. Nowadays, I have a 2-in-1 laptop and use a stylus to take notes instead!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nowadays, I have a 2-in-1 laptop and use a stylus to take notes instead!

I also have one, and it's cool. But, but! Have you tried a fountain pen? I mean, I may be weird, but it's kind of cool. But I really, really should invest into some better paper. Regular paper seems OK, but something better... would be... better.
Though I did have some luck with certain cheap notebooks from Papírny Brno. The ones that have smoother, white paper. Not the darker, coarse, recycled stuff.

And that's even with that cheap paper (though most paper won't show any sheen at all). Better paper would likely show more sheening, especially in combination with wetter pen, but I don't know where to get it.

Although... the Skull & Roses dries a bit too quickly. If you stop writing for a bit, it dries in a few seconds in the nib, and won't write anymore.
Another issue is that the ink can be a bit distracting. I like to watch it dry, I like to write with it, I like to look at the sheen which makes me angle it under light to see it better. So I just end up scribbling something, and look at it, and my mind is gone.

Unfortunately we do most stuff on computers, so I don't get to write much.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

This is for you, just for geeking out about ink and paper ❤️ have some Lemmy Gold 🪙

But yeah, I remember writing with fountain pens when I was at school, but I was awful with them.

I did get the hang of it after a point, though, and the writing was always beautiful when I got it working.

I may have to invest. It'll give me an excuse to write some handwritten letters to friends and family ❤️

These measures seem kind of pointless with how many undetectable options there are for cheating in an online exam.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 hours ago

There is more than that in these kind of exams.
When doing a Microsoft certification exam they require:

  • camera footage of you doing the exam
  • screen recording while doing the exam
  • microphone recording while doing the exam
  • a 360 view/footage of the room youre doing the exam in.

This is so that they can catch any type of cheating you could do. The camera footage is only part of the checks.

haha isn't it so funny how I'm in charge of the panopticon and you have no choice but to shut the fuck up and bear it?

AI is once again showing its skill level.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

This has nothing to do with AI. Facial detection was there decades before the AI hype.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 hours ago

The difference a person would know that’s a poster in a frame on a wall and not an actual person.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

At least it's flagged as two people now and not as a person and a gorilla

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Two "persons"...

And the powers that be keep scratching their heads about falling birth rates…

[–] [email protected] 35 points 1 day ago

Thats not funny, thats creepy as fuck...

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I have no idea what any of this means.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The students are spied on by their teachers using AI and webcams when they do exams online on their laptop.

This teacher is expressing amusement at the image on the wall fooling the AI into thinking the student had someone help them during the test. The teacher then goes on to comment that they can tell that the student kept looking to the left (the teacher assuming they are looking things up in a book or by using a second device) and that the student might want to remove the image from their wall to avoid the AI flagging them.

[–] [email protected] 121 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Good explanation, but I think you're reading too much into "I can tell when you shift to the left." The teacher just means that when the student shifts to their left, their head isn't covering the poster so the AI flags the second face.

This is officially my most unnecessary comment, but I already typed it so it's going up.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 20 hours ago

If that is your most unnecessary comment then you must not comment very much because it seems helpful and well placed.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago

AI system examines webcam footage for signs of cheating during an exam. AI thinks poster behind student is another person in the room that could be helping during a test. AI flags it for teacher to review as possible cheating. Teacher checks footage and sees that AI fucked up (sorta, I mean it did detect the face as trained to do).
