Don't they know just because you've banned a word, doesn't mean that the item or thing automatically poofs out of existence?

This is that easy. There's a few words I'd love to ban. How about Elmo? And Turd

[–] [email protected] 38 points 8 hours ago

It makes it harder to pursue science when you cannot use the terns others in ypur field use.

This is pretty dumb even by trump standards. You would think the right of all people would know that trying to ban terms will just result in new euphemisms and jargon being created.

Most of the research caught up is probably going to be using the terms incidentally (for instance, a drug study that happens to mention participants were AMAB) and this will cause a bunch of paperwork and probably just end up being changed to something like "gametically" or "chromosomally".

Literally speedrunning the Nazi handbook.

An attack on science is an attack on us all. They are trying to erase science they dont agree with. This is Christian fascism - welcome to giliad.

Anyone in the US please organise - join an anti religious influence group, protest, disobey. You must fight back.

Science doesn't need politics, politics needs science.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

No it surely doesn't. Politics can exist with no new science.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 hours ago

It can, but it shouldn't.

I'm so fucking scared. They've inhibited our movement by fucking with passports, they've defined us as dishonest and dishonorable in the EO kick us out of the military, they've codified the notion that our gender identity constitutes sexual deviance and poses a threat to children, they've attacked proven life-saving care, with a focus on children and an impact on adults.

and now they're trying to book-burn us out of existence.

this is systematic dehumanization, the track record of which is grim.

There's just straight up not enough of us to do this on our own.

If people don't start standing up for us, we're fucked.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 hours ago

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine where your head is at right now.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 13 hours ago (6 children)

Wait, how did they mess with passports?

[–] [email protected] 41 points 9 hours ago

They are stealing the documents of trans people who go to get new documents including passports, leaving them without identifying paperwork (and identified by the authorities by the paperwork they lost) in a time where that is very convenient for the people in power, and threatening them with arrest if they ask for them back. In addition to what has been said already

[–] [email protected] 36 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

non-binary people had been getting “X“ instead of M or F on their passport. The Trump administration will no longer allow those passports to be issued

There was a story about how they wouldn't renew some transgender persons passport the other day.

The entire passport office is shut down right now .

They are not issuing new passports.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 hours ago

For anyone trans or NB, starting with applications received from 1/16. Others are not impacted yet AFAIK.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (2 children)

Unless you mean because it's 3 am on a Sunday, this is blatent misinformation.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe it's just the three trans people I know that are trying to leave the country right now, my brother's family, and a bunch of family friends that come from a family of pilots and flight attendants.

I'm sure they are the only people having trouble in the whole country. Must be an isolated incident. ... ...

They are all located out west and in the Midwest, so maybe it's just the Chicago office and the website. I don't know if anybody has tried doing it through mail correspondence yet but that takes a little bit more time anyway.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 hours ago

That's completely different than, "The entire passport office is shut right now.". You were either being unnecessarily hyperbolic, or intentionally spreading misinformation. Neither helps in situations like this.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 7 hours ago

There have been multiple people in local groups that have reported this happening to them this week. Going to get documentation updated, sent home without anything - not even documentation with natal sex. Local queer org put out an advisory - reached out to all shrinks that work with queer people.

[–] weariedfae 6 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Wait, for real? For everyone?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 hours ago

For anyone with an x or that is trans. Renewals for them is awaiting on a policy update.

Back up everything. Don't let it be memory-holed! Holy crap.

[–] [email protected] 32 points 12 hours ago

This needs more upvotes. Granted, the time to back up everything was when project 2025 hit the internet last year.

Oh look...

The US is embedding a totalitarian theonomic government. A new, (soon to be) militarized, hierarchy regime of religious fanaticism and newly created social classes, in which DEI is being brutally subjugated.

I swear I've seen this show before...

Following the manual to the letter

[–] emergence_trailblazer 77 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

And just like that sci-hub will be even more useful

There is also annas-archive.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 13 hours ago

This must be all that government waste I've been hearing about...

[–] [email protected] 24 points 13 hours ago

I think the endgame is to tear down anything tax dollars have touched. Which, you know, is plausible since his entire platform could be simply summed up as a giant middle finger.

Expect them to attempt to torch more than our science databases

[–] [email protected] 26 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I hope no one resubmits anything.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 14 hours ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 35 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Publish it somewhere else. Don't let the fascists control data and reality.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

If only publishing wasn't such a painful process. Maybe other journals can fastrack retracted cdc papers

[–] [email protected] 14 points 13 hours ago

Theoretically, this could be the impetus that Sparks Open journals, but unfortunately that doesn't seem very likely.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Why not move all journals out of the US or move all research out of US journals. Who cares if for instance JAMA publishes nothing this year? Nearly 100% of the value was always in the scientists who write and review the work

[–] [email protected] 13 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

it’s not US journals which are affected, it’s the scientists working for the CDC

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 hours ago
[–] [email protected] 10 points 13 hours ago

Is there an equivalent to samizdat in scientific journals?

If so, our scientists should adopt some pseudonyms...
