A collection of pixels on a screen must first prove to me that they are human, then that we work out as a couple, then that there is a reason to be connected on social media as well. Longest relationship I ever had, we never connected each other's social media accounts. What would be the point?

i used to, until i found out about linux (i used dos because that way i didnt have to use windows lmao, so when i found a distro that doesnt format ur hdd when install i was like, "screw dos, i have a new daily driver")

I have an instagram account to better fit in and none of my friends ever really post. Its mostly for messaging, sharing stuff we find, looking at stuff.
Rarely anyone seems to share every bit of what they do, if at all.
Shallow people are suspicious.

The cycle of enshittification always ends up making them basically unusable at some point, and only real simple people are still using it by that point.

I feel like I have more engagement with people all around world in Fediverse than I ever did on any other social media.
I feel the same way about private torrent trackers. I'm exposed to so many people and so much media from all over the world I would otherwise never see or talk to. The media is a big deal, too, because it helps me understand and conceptualize how other cultures view things. When that media is never released to Western audiences, that means Western audiences aren't exploring those cultural ideas.
I get exposed to them because I pirate them.

I want a friend who would message me using IRC
I so wish I could get all my friends off discord into a private IRC server.
Matrix would probably be an easier sell but thing is most discord users are in 100 different discord spaces and dont want to leave all that behind.
I still use discord for shit that just refuses to leave discord. Its not helping but theres no fighting it in many cases. If you have a small group of friends you should definitely try to get them to move to something less shitty, but the really big communities would be even harder than moving people from reddit to lemmy.
