My doctor told me I was having mini strokes and had to go to the ER. Sat for 8 hours in the ER . There was a girl there a little younger than me telling them about the same exact symptoms I had. I finally had enough after they told me to wait for the eighth time, and stormed out.

Went home. Woke up blind. I had the stroke in my sleep that night. (1/10, don't recommend).

Then I had to go to three specialists before I could go back to the ER and be let into triage.

So, yeah. This comic is dead on accurate.

Holy shit, what hospital puts "risk of stroke" that low on the triage list?

[–] [email protected] 36 points 1 month ago

This is an excellent question.

In 1994, I broke my arm, obviously went to the ER. The only patient they considered higher priority was a potentially dying baby. I can respect that and did even as a kid at the time. (Unrelated to the rest of the comment, but the doctor who ended up repairing my arm told me, a seven year old with a broken arm, "stop being a crybaby." What a jerk.)

In 2022, I broke my ankle. I waited for hours before being admitted. After the EMTs dropped me off, the hospital wouldn't even give me water or painkillers because "we're not sure how the doctor is going to want to treat you." (I think they were referring to the method of administering anesthetic.) In my several hours in the waiting room in a wheelchair, I didn't see anyone else getting admitted. However, that was during the peak of COVID, so it's fair to say things could have been going on behind the scenes; still, communication with waiting patients could have been better. I saw at least two patients give up and leave. I was definitely the nurses' only advocate in the waiting room. (I didn't cry that time. Guess I learned my lesson.)

Then in 2023 I had a nosebleed that wouldn't stop. I walked into the ER literally holding a mixing bowl of blood under my nose and was admitted immediately, I think without even any paperwork (though my wife might have filled that out after the nurses took me in). After I was admitted, they ignored me for an amount of time I couldn't quantify ... Until I started passing out, at which point I suddenly became a priority. (During the wait, one nurse listened to me and laughed as I compared my bowl to how they called Lucifer in Supernatural, then walked away.)

I started this post thinking I had a point, but I think I kind of lost it remembering all that stuff as I typed it. However, the vast majority of medical staff I've met are good, competent and compassionate people. Communication is often a problem but I doubt that's due to the front line.

I have no idea why a potential stroke victim would be left unattended that long. My best guess is, if it was during COVID, all of the hospital's beds were just full so they literally had nowhere to put that person; however, I don't know enough about hospital administration to make any useful comment on it.

One last point: while everything I said is true to the best of my memory, I left out a lot of details in the interest of brevity I didn't quite manage. If you got this far, thanks for reading my rambling, pointless comment!

I know when I went to the ER with aphasia and stroke-like symptoms I got seen nearly immediately. Like front of the line as fast as possible. I was getting a CT scan in like 30 minutes. So I think OP is either stretching the truth or didn't properly articulate their symptoms.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

No not stretching the truth lol

Fund state medical care! Shit man..that is fucking horrible, I’ve had similar thing but on a much much smaller scale. Hope you are doing ok and the blindness recovered quickly. Scary shit.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Thanks. Yeah I'm better, nowhere near what I was though. Took a year and a half to recover. Now they just shrug and say "it's your new normal".

I think about that other girl sometimes though. I doubt she has good insurance like I did. I hope she's ok.

After my first experience, I only go to the ER like I'm packing overnight. Big camp bag with food and drinks and entertainment. they're going to see me eventually...

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yeah. Definitely bring food and drinks. Bring a book, phone charger, the whole shabang. You will be there all day and night. It's not something you just go do for the afternoon.

I don't know about bringing too much though. My hospital will through everything you bring in, even in the ER. It's a hassle.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Shit. Are you still blind?

[–] [email protected] 42 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

One of my eyes has a huge scar in it that takes up half the vision. I basically trained myself to mainly look out of the other eye.

It was interesting to me. You don't realize that being blind doesn't mean you see blackness. You just literally do not see anything. There's nothing to see. It's simply something that does not exist.

The hardest part was the blind part turned into brightness when I close my eyes. So I can't fall asleep to darkness anymore. It's very weird. There's lots of things like that you never expect in life when you're injured.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Could you still imagine things?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

"a girl there a little younger than me". May I ask roughly your age at the time? I must confess I associate strokes with the elderly or people well into their middle age already. Is it also common among children?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Lots of adults call women girls for some weird reason.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Lots of adults call men boys too, and it’s not weird. In fact there’s a whole TV about it

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Anyone younger and/or less mature than me is a kid/kiddo

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

I'm guessing she was young 30's

Can someone explain the joke, please? I'm at a loss.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

If you read my other comment you'll understand.

Edit. Oh shit, you're kidding right? I just realized the loss part lol

Full credit to you for the idea :) I forgot where I saw the comment after I finished work and made it.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So it was inspired by my comment! I thought it was just a coincidence.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

It very much was, I thought it was a hilarious idea and it appealed to me as customer support myself!

Why did you posted a picture?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Because I posted the comment yesterday, which was before this was posted.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Makes sense.
