I've had a bit of a time trying to explain the difference between 'scary' and 'afraid' to my wife.

This is similar to, but distinct from, the more widely known “DontDeadOpenInside” format. In that case, the text reads correctly top to bottom, but visual cues (like colouration, horizontal proximity, or vertical separation) lead you to try to read it left to right.

A typo is when you slip up and type/get something wrong because you're moving too fast to pay attention.
Spelling a word wrong because you don't know how to spell it isn't a typo. This person doesn't strike me as an intellectual that knows complex spellings like "afraid"
