I thought it would be a cool idea to do a poll right before the year ends to see what everyone is using

Sync!

It was nice to migrate straight from Reddit and have the app seamlessly just switch right over.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yep! Sync was one of the easiest app purchases I've made in a long time. I spent probably 3 hours a day on average on Reddit, including both business and personal uses. It was well worth the money for something I rely on so heavily.

Though, I'm a bit concerned about Dawson; it seems he's gone dark.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 11 months ago (3 children)

He's done that in the past and may do it again.

He is an amazing developer but I can't help but think that he overworks himself.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Yeah, honestly I don't care as much about the app getting more updates as I do hope his mental health is good. But honestly it could just as easily be me projecting my own demotivators on him. He could just be chilling on a beach taking a nice year break.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Yeah, I remember that from Reddit as well. I just hope he's doing ok tbh

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

I'm not him, and don't know him, but I can say that I'm the type to make fuck tons of progress on my projects in like a month, and then disappear for a month. For me it's not burnout or overwork, I just get in the groove and pour everything into my software and then fall out of it for a bit.

I've had some users poke me about my Steam Deck plugin recently. I might go back to it eventually, but it feels "done" for now. I'm sure once I get another good idea for it and hit that groove I'll be back to frequent updates.

Considering he has a history of it I wouldn't be surprised if it was a similar story. Hope he's doing well.

VPN user voting is not allowed

WTF, why? I’m not turning off my VPN.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 11 months ago

Yup. Add me to the list of non voters due to VPN.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 11 months ago

Same. Immediate nope out.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 11 months ago

I did turn mine off and it still denied me for the same reason lol

Voyager, with Avelon as backup to find already read hidden posts as Voyager is a bit of a pain for that.

also

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Lemmy as a whole is a pain for that. It's one thing when in the feed I read/vote/comment something and I want that hidden from the feed to remove clutter. But when I specifically search for it or browse a community I don't want those posts hidden. Obviously.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

Yeah, it’s easy to hide but difficult to show hidden in most apps. That’s why I appreciate Avelon’s “Show Read Posts” option under the 3 dots on the main feed.

I prefer Voyager because it doesn't sell my identity and current location to 3rd parties (DDG app confirms this). And it's a straightforward app with most of the features I miss from Relay for reddit.

Eternity has been perfect for my needs after Liftoff went on break. I can't vote because of my VPN, though.

Edit: That is, I can't vote on Strawpoll. Eternity works perfectly!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago

Eternity is just the best. It's not the most slick looking but it is feature rich and so snappy!

[–] threelonmusketeers 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I love Eternity! It's the only app I've found that implements "swipe between posts" the way Joey and Reddit did. It's super customizable too!

The one feature I wish it had is "get reply notifications" for posts and comments that are not my own, but I'm still interested in. Anyone know of an app with this feature?

Voyager app (Droid-ify, IzzyOnDroid) on mobile, and Alexandrite on desktop. Evocative of the kind of experience delivered by apps like Relay and browser extensions like RES, to name two at random from a small sample.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

I just found Alexandrite and it is eye-opening! Beautiful and every feature is perfectly intuitive

[–] [email protected] 15 points 11 months ago

Sync was Reddit for me. Sync is Lemmy for me.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Was Jerboa, but a version issue forced me to Voyager. I'm happy with Voyager too.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Yeah. I started with jerboa initially then jumped on eternity for some time. Now using voyager.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Thunder for now, unless Liftoff gets patched for 0.19

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

Liftoff is so good, I don't know what I'll do if it stops working

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago (4 children)

Something off with it to me, I have been using Jerboa mostly and boost if there are issues. It might be the having to hold down instead of tap to minimize things I've read, or the dark mode having to have the blue instead of just being grey, I keep going back to Jerboa

Sync as my daily driver. Connect as my backup.

Summit, jerboa, liftoff, voyager, and boost all get occasional use.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Primarily was Liftoff, but since the dev is busy with IRL. Then I moved to Jerboa as the main app.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

I used liftoff too but now i use voyager, it quite good too.

[–] Kecessa 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Still on Jerboa because it reminds me of Baconreader

For iOS it’s Voyager or the browser for me. I’m still hooked on old.style.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I was using Memmy initially but ran into an issue with top comments not being displayed.

I’ve since switched to Voyager and it’s pretty good so far. A few quirks that I think are still being worked through with swipe navigation, but I’m sure it’ll get pinned down.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

That’s good to know. I’m new and by chance fell into Memmy. It’s always weird and crashes randomly.

[–] spacecowboy 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I tried a bunch of the iOS ones and ended up on Mlem. Feels akin to Apollo, as most seem to.

Voyager as an app on one device, Voyager as a PWA on another. App seems to work better.

Boost as a backup. Backup mostly in the sense that sometimes I open that instead. Voyager has the lead, but Boost is worth keeping an eye on.

[–] AbackDeckWARLORD 5 points 11 months ago

Mlem for iOS has been really good. They also have an active dev scene on GitHub too.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

I use my instance' website in-browser (Firefox) ... is that really so uncommon as to not be an option here?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

same, I don't get the point of apps for something that works perfectly fine in a web browser (desktop or mobile)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Well it's specifically a poll about which app you're using so...

Liftoff has decent market share, shame the creators seemed to have went silent :(

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Mlem for me!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Thunder, because it doesn’t look like another clone of Apollo which most lemmy apps seem to try to emulate. Special mention to Arctic because it can embed gifs and videos and allows scrubbing (Avelon wants you to pay to scrub media).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Are we counting web apps here? I made Quiblr and I use it as my daily driver lol
