Didn’t take physics 11 in highschool, need it to become an electrician apprentice here in British Columbia Canada. Any suggestions?? Could always go back and do it online but I would rather not.

I know there are plenty of Ecad programs out there for small electronics and arduino circuits etc. but is there anything out there for our side of things? A/c stuff (8 pins, start -stop switches, contactors, SSRs etc.) I know you could use a paint program or sketchup or something and just draw a bunch of stuff together on a screen but there is no way to validate it or simulate it or verify it all works. Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi

I’m currently a first year apprentice I work in residential properties chaining accessories, board changes, re wires etc

I’m looking at getting my first impact to stop the delay and nuisance of swapping between myself and who I’m shadowing. It will mainly be used for screwing up smokes, lights taking up floor boards etc

I don’t have any power tools yet and I was wondering between 18v or 12v.

At the end of my apprenticeship at least I will buy a set of all the power tools I’ll need so will have a copy of the 18v if I go for that one, just wondering if anyone has similar daily work habits that can advice on if 12v will be enough for what I need or to just go for the 18v? (Thinking of Milwaukee fuel line btw)

Thanks

The title says it all, really.

I'm in the process of adjusting my current build, which has required taking my components like my cooler and my CPU out several times to test things.

I went to a nearby electronics shop to pick up a new tube of thermal paste, however they ended up selling me what I now understand is thermal plaster or heat sink plaster, which is apparently intended to be used to PERMANENTLY adhere a heatsink. Mind you, I asked for paste but I guess it's at least partially my fault for not double checking but fuck me I didn't even know thermal plaster was a thing.

I deeply do not wish my cooler to be permanently attached to my cpu, especially since it's currently in a motherboard I'm trying to replace, and the CPU release lever is blocked by the fucking cooler.

What can I do about this? As far as I can tell this is not something that happens often so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do. I've tried the ol hair dryer and tooth floss trick extensively and while I think it might be doing something, it's incredibly slow going and I'm worried I'm going to damage something.

I want to get some opinions on my part list for a sff pc.

I recently got a 4k 240hz monitor from LG to use with my Mac mini but I would like to use it for gaming. My previous pc I use for gaming until now, is a laptop with gtx 1060 from like 8 years ago, I really need an upgrade.

The games I mainly want to play are, ETS2, asseto corsa, half-life alyx, Minecraft (with shaders), cyberpunk. I would also like to get into more modern titles but I mainly play single player rpgs.

I want to utilize my 4k 240hz monitor, the 5070ti is probably not going to be able to use the full spec of my monitor but I hope it’s good enough to play comfortably in 4k on higher settings. The multi frame gen of the RTX 50 series seems like it would be great for this use case.

The main worries I have are, is the ryzen 7 9700x a good option for this build? If the price I can get for the 5070ti is about the same as a 4080, should I just stick with the 5070ti? Or should I save some money and go with a 4070ti super?

Other than those worries, is the rest of the build ok?

Here’s the parts list.

I am considering a couple of refurbished PCs from reliable sources, as I have no time to build my own at the moment. I need this PC for improved performance in Kdenlive, which uses the CPU for editing, so no major concern about GPU right now. I need power, but also want a reliable CPU that will not give me problems. Would rather have less power in a the CPU works well consistently, than something more powerful that has a tendency to fail. I understand the 14th generation has more power than i7 10th, but have read that it was not to be trusted. Apparently some piece of code could be used to update the BIOS of the motherboard or something. Also, I know there are better CPUs, but I need to choose between two affordable refurbished PCs, I have narrowed down my choices and need to make a decision so I can get back to work asap. I appreciate any insights and advice! Thank you!

So im upgrading from a Ryzen 7 2700x and GTX 1070Ti. The game ive been playing the most, by far, is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and my current system just isn’t cutting it anymore. I’ve already bought and received a Ryzen 7 9800x3d, Asus rog strix X870E motherboard, and 64gb of tridentz memory. Now I’ve been thinking about getting the MSI Vanguard RTX 5080, but im not sure if that’s the play since the Rtx 5080 is so underwhelming. Any other gpu ideas? 1440P is my resolution.

Recently upgraded from an rx 590 to an rtx 3080 and my performance is lacking in lots of games. My other specs are Ryzen 7 2700, 32 GB ddr4 3600, 850W. Obviously the cpu is going to bottleneck the gpu here but my performance with the same settings seems to have gone down since getting the new gpu. I uninstalled my old gpu drivers with DDU and installed new nvidia ones.

My main issue is that both CS2 and minecraft seem to actually run worse with the exact same settings compared to the rx 590. I tried benchmarking the 3080 with 3d mark and although slightly worse than other 3080s it still did about the same (much more than the 590). Don't get me wrong I wasn't expecting to get the full performance out of the card but I expected more than this.

Am I perhaps missing something important that I should've changed when switching cards?

I'm finally ready to make the jump to an OLED monitor. However, I'm having a very tough time deciding whether I should just stay on 1440p, or get a 4k/1080p dual mode monitor. I know my GPU isn't gonna play all titles in 4k well, which is why I was looking at dual mode monitors so the games that it can handle I could play in 4k, and the ones it can't I could play in 1080p. I saw a really great deal on a W-OLED one in buildapcsales today. Or would I be better off overall just getting a 1440p QD-OLED monitor? And if so, any recommendations that are at a good price right now? I've seen quite a few lately in that same sub and not sure what would be the best choice for the price. I've listed my PC/monitor specs below. I'm used to a 32" so that's what I would prefer, but would be willing to go to 27-34" if its that much more worth it. Also the monitor having a kvm would be nice, but not necessary.

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Hi,

my old machine is slowly showing its age, whilst the 1800x and 1080TI were top of the line 8 years ago, now they struggle to get acceptable FPS in titles that I want to play. I have a budget of about 1000€ (ish) and do not need to worry about SSDs (I can use my old M.2 and Sata Drive)

I was eye-ing:

CPU; 7600X (Definitely want an AM5 for future proofing) but I need 1440p performance that is giving me breathing room for at least another 5 years ( I do not plan to upgrade regularly )

GPU: 7900 GRE/XT (Personally I want an affordable card that gives me great 1440p performance for years to come and while DLSS 3/4 is interesting and frame generation does sound interesting it feels like I cannot afford the same performance for the same price)

RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 MHZ ( probably G.Skill or Corsair, just need 32GB of ram, do not care really )

CASE: I am not picky, decent airflow and pre-installed fans (2x Front and 1x Back is all I need)

Mainboard: 620/650 (Do I need a 650? If so the cheapest with 4x RAM Slots and hopefully 2 x m.2 slots)

PSU: 750W (probably partially modular or fully modular. Enermax, Corsair, Bequiet, around 80€ I hope)

Now come the questions:

Do I wait for 5070 (not TI) to be announced? Do we expect the new AMD Graphicscard to make an improvement worth waiting for at the same price point? Since it seems Nvidia does not produce enough cards, it feels like even besides the MSRP that team red will be more affordable.

Hello everyone. Question: As per Canadian code are we allowed to install power disconnect on the side of vertical lifting post of a parking carlift?

what hand lotions do you yall use? In the winters here(midwest) they get so dry they crack and bleed. Im not as concerned about having super soft hands as I am about having something that prevents my hands from being literally chapped. I tried O'Keifs Working hands, it doesnt help much. another buddy in trades told me its garbage too. You all use something that prevents you from feeling like a desert monster when you touch a woman? Or are your wives filing for divorce?

Found a Milwaukee tool on the side of the road and was wondering outside of posting to my local area Facebook group about it if you guys have any other crafty ideas to find a tools rightful owner?

It’s expensive enough that I know I’d very much like it back if I were them.

Safe area, assumed it fell out of a truck based on the location. No bites on fb yet for 24 hrs and we live in a pretty small area with a lot of facebooking in the community.
