Background for myself, I was a viewer when Good Burger was a sketch on “All That,” a children’s sketch comedy show on Nickelodeon in the 90’s. It was basically Saturday night live for kids. They had this heavyset girl who sarcastically read the news like Chevy Chase and shit. It was pretty edgy for nine-year-olds. Good Burger wasn’t even the funniest sketch on the fucking show. All of the comedy revolved around Kel’s character talking like a white surfer/stoner guy…like Bill & Ted, also popular around the time. He misunderstood peoples orders in an adorable way…I’d like a shake so he would shake you. Great.

In 1997 I graduated high school and they released the movie that year… I guess it’s nostalgic and that’s why people remember it. Other 90s kids? Similar to SNL movies, it had cameos from a bunch of stars, and sort of a built-in audience, I guess, because of TV. I’m not sure if it went to theaters, but if it did, I don’t know who in the hell would watch it. Seems more like a VHS or Nickelodeon in the afternoon kind of thing.

For me, I don’t understand how they could squeeze anything longer than a seven minute sketch out of the concept. I guess he Keenan Thompson is funny, but even him I’ve never seen him be funny longer than a seven minute sketch. And Kel is kind of like Jason Mewes, a novelty and not really a comedian or actor. Cool that he’s still around, like the Chinese kid from Indiana Jones.

Edit to add - Ke Huy Quan deserved the Oscar as he’s talented…Kel is not, only nostalgic imo

OK then. Doesn’t make sense to me that this movie was made or that anyone is in it or that anyone would want to watch it. But the Internet won’t stop trying to get me to see it. And it has like 67% critic rating on rotten tomatoes. Am I missing something? There are lots of fantastic movies that barely have 67%.

if you graduated the year the original was released, i would say you were about 4-6 years too late. the humor seems designed for those graduating around 00-03 (slightly younger), and this second movie as you notice would only appeal directly to that very specific audience.

its a love letter to the kids a few years after you, with no added value whatsoever.

I think you’re right. 1994 when All That came on the air I was 13… I’m right on the bubble between Gen X and millennial, Good burger must be more millennial.

Still hoping they make a new Bill & Ted and I will definitely see it, even if it’s bad. Not at the theater tho… EDIT dammit I missed it I guess.

Encino Man sequel next?

They did make a new Bill & Ted a few years ago. I keep meaning to get around to watching it.

It wasn't that good, at least to me. Keanu Reeves is sleepwalking compared to Alex Winters, and it was made during covid so a lot of the cgi locations look really empty.

A third Bill and Ted movie (Face the Music) came out in 2020, did you see that one?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Dammit. I will but sad it isn’t supposed to be good from what I see

It wasn't terrible, just keep your expectations low.

if you liked Pete & Pete, i'd recommend a revisit. it has aged remarkably well despite the lack of tech in the show.

Toby Huss went on to do a lot of great and varied projects (I'm especially fond of Reno 911! and Halt and Catch Fire) but I wonder how often people mention his character, Artie, The Strongest Man in the World, when they meet him.

Pete & Pete definitely aged very well and the opening theme song [Piped mirror] still rocks too.

Is that streaming anywhere, or still High Seas territory?

The way that show got treated was fucked. No season 3 release on DVD, and the only BluRay I can find looks kinda sketch.

For the longest time, I wanted a metal plate in my head that picked up radio signals. It sounded fun, as a kid.

i actually burned my own S3 disks back in the day. 'course, thats all jellfyin'ed now.

as far as i know you cannot legally buy it, so you would definitely need to utilize more creative methods. it is out there.

In 1994 I was five. Good burger 2 was made for me, not you.

lol perfect… is it funny?

[-] [email protected] 16 points 7 months ago

Nostalgia is the simple answer. I watched it last night, it wasn't very good, but it had some funny jokes and throwback moments.

In terms of ratings, 67% is probably a bit high even for the target audience. Outside the target audience it should be much lower.

In terms of content, they stretched the skit to make the first movie and it was fine. For the sequel, they pretty much just reference things and add a little bit.

Basically if you think you'd like to see it, you'll probably enjoy at least parts of it. If you skip it, you're not missing anything.

Wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. My wife recently bought the kids the original to play in the car while on road trips, so hearing it in the background while the kids laugh at it was a good refresher before watching this last night.

It's nostalgia, plain and simple. The throwbacks to the original characters, like Roxanne and Monique were fun with a few sensible chuckle level of jokes, but overall it's not something that would even be remotely fun if it wasn't for the nostalgic bit that reminds you of the original.

I remember the first Good Burger movie being good, I'd watch another. Wayne's World was just a sketch and it made a great movie. Was the second one good? I don't remember.

The second one has its moments, but it's not as memorable as the first one. All I ever remember is the naked native American ass.

Yep. Plenty of things from my childhood are objectively terrible but I still love them.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

When I found out Hook reviewed terribly I was devastated. Then I watched it again. Yeah, ok that checks out.

That Chinese kid from Indiana Jones just won an Oscar. 🤦🏻‍♂️

[-] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Edited - Ke Huy Quan deserves the Oscar but kel doesnt deserve movies just for nostalgia. If he is talented tell me. Is he?

[-] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago

It was just a really weird comparison.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 7 months ago

Keenan Thompson is a one trick pony. It's why he's been on SNL for decades. Always playing the same character.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

It's a good character.

All That is pretty popular with my little brothers generation too, it’s on streaming, and Keenan And Kels bits were my brothers favorite parts, though I can’t speak to his friends. But I imagine it’s mostly nostalgia, for sure.

Kel has also been a Nick staple as an adult for at least the past 10 years, so kids know him. And Paramount+ has All That and Kenan and Kel, giving younger audiences a chance to become familiar with them.

Literally nobody cares if you watch it. Other people may want to, so why are you worried about it? Not everything is made for you.
