I've been using a 9700k since 2018 and am thinking about upgrading. I got a 3090 a bit ago and the 9700k is obviously bottlenecking what I can get out of it. Should I wait another year or upgrade soon?

You'll absolutely be shocked by how much faster it will be. I went from 9900k to 14700k and I was.

I was going to wait but didn't think it was worth dealing with new teething issues of the 15th gen chips and accompanying boards. Also didnt want to be forced to a new a new OS. Very happy with Windows 10.

Hell yes upgrade. A new CPU does wonders for everything.

15th gen at least gives you an upgrade path rather than buying into a dead platform. That’s if you can wait until next year.

From what I can find (PassMark cpu comparison) its about 35.4% increase in single core performance and 72.6% increase in multicore performance.

Just do it! You can always wait, but as soon as you are ready something new will be out or right around the corner and the circle of waiting will go on forever. Only YOU can decide.

And here I am using an 6850k with a 4090... Still waiting... gif

don't listen to people who say "you are buying into a dead platform". You used the 9700k for +5 years. If you buy 15th gen cpu, I will assume you will also you use it for +5 years. by the time you upgrade from 15th gen to whatever gen, that platform is "dead" as well because intel would have a new socket. this whole "upgrade path" is unnecessary unless you plan on upgrading every gen. Even if you skip a gen, again, most likely a "dead platform".

i have a 9900k and im thinking of upgrading as well.. mostly because of physics simulations in 3d rendering. takes forever to bake physics and slow view port displays while animating. its also bottlenecking my 4080 (upgraded from gtx 1080).

I have the 4080 with an OC 9700k and I have zero need to upgrade since I'm primarily gaming on my computer and everything runs great at 3440x1440. What makes you want to upgrade besides the fun in upgrading and prices especially at microcenter are pretty good?

Fair point. I almost only game in a 60Hz 1080p monitor and do work stuff (office, surfing, BS in general) so my i7 6700K is still enough for the rx 6600 i upgraded from the excellent but ancient gtx 1050ti I used to run. I would love to have a 9th gen as it is W11 supported, but it all depends on what you use your pc for. I guess I'm upgrading soon when W10 EOL, but so far I'm in no hurry. If your PC does not the job As ypu want/need just get one. If it still does, hold. No point in waiting, YOLO, don't wait.

I would say wait a year. This generation blows and the motherboard socket is 99% not gonna be supported by next gen. 9900k is a solid processor

I'd say wait a few months to see what and releases then take your decision. That's what I'm doing personally. 9700k + 7900xtx Besides cyberpunk the gpu is generally the bottleneck at my res (5120x1440)

Do the upgrade now. Never be a guinea pig for new tech.

No one knows what performance will be like on 15th gen since it'll use tiles and a different architecture -- the rumors are all over the place from what I've read. There might be some weird problems, or it might just be similar to what 14th gen offers today, but with "MOAR coarez" which should help with certain workloads, but probably not much for gaming.

The main benefit I can see from waiting would be that you can drop in 16th gen (probably) and hopefully, by then, whatever issues there may be with 15th gen would be worked out.

I ended up going from a 9700k to 12700k about a year ago ish. 2 questions you need to answer… is it financially viable? Is it necessary or more of a want?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

8f you can wait for 15th gen do it. Since 15th gen going to be on 7nm and it will be a big boost in performance.

I have the 9700K as well, and gen 15 it is.

If you've lasted this long I'm sure you can last 1 more year. From the looks of it Arrow lake will come out late 2024 and be a MASSIVE increase over 14th Gen. Which was barely anything over 13th, which wasn't much over 12th. So waiting for a real architectural update is the way to go
