Some birb names have recently been changed, but it was more about reversing racial stereotypes. The tits and bananaquits got to stay

scientists love dicks

*for lemmy reasons this is a joke

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

I think you're at least half right, statistically

I thought it was less about racial stereotypes, and more about this big recent push across multiple fields to not have people's names attached to things. Right now (or recently) it's about oviducts v Fallopian tubes or the bulbourethral gland v Cowperis gland in biology, which I'm familiar with. I think there was a post and comment thread about birds specifically in the last few days on Lemmy; same thing with people's names being removed.

From what I've seen, a lot of the motivation to not have peoples' names attached to things is because people have things attached to them (such as racism). Not saying that's every case, but I'm sure that's a significant factor behind the general push.

Still calling Kestrels Windfuckers

Blue-footed boobies are the only boobies, I can get behind.

"BananaQuit" sounds like a randomised username in some online game.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

I am a little disappointed that your user name wasn't Bananaquit. That would have been epic.

I think they name bird like that so bird watching sound more fun to people who doesn't know bird

What are you doing in your spare time?

I usually go to see booby and tit but sometimes dick and cock

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

You're a dodo

[–] h3rm17 1 points 10 months ago

Birdwatching goes both ways

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago

Tufted titmice are among my favorite birds - and not just because I get to say "tit" in polite company... Also cockatoos and cockatiels.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago (2 children)

not a naughty name, but I wonder what was the scientist who named "Yellow-bellied sapsucker" was going through

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

My favourite is the grey go-away-bird.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

That's just mockingbirds though. Lol

That's just mockingbirds though. Lol

That one at least makes sense, if they're drinking tree sap and have yellow feathers on their belly

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

I mean the other names make sense with additional context

Both Tit- and Cock- as prefixes used to mean small (no laughing in the back, please)

And Hoary means grey-haired or old-looking

edit as I had to look this one up: "Booby" is an ellision of "Bobo" - as in "No seas tan bobo" (Spanish) - meaning "silly, naive, dumb..." as they tend to be quite tame birds

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Doesn't bobo also mean stupid or idiot in Tagalog?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

Probably , because so much Spanish is Infused into Tagalog

Sure, but beware, I'm a horned screamer

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Why has noone mentioned the woodpecker?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

Trauma, mostly.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

Hornithologists

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Horny dinosaurs

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

This even works across languages. In brazilian portuguese, a chick is called "Pinto" which is also a slang for dick.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

what's wrong with "bananaquit"? what about it is dirty? i'm guessing it's either "banana" or "quit" but i don't see it

[–] davsf 0 points 10 months ago

Dont for get that bird watchers talk about jizz.

the overall impression or appearance of a bird garnered from such features as shape, posture, flying style or other habitual movements, size and colouration combined with voice, habitat and location.
