Total Lemmy newb. RIF refuge and not going back to reddit. I'm sure responses here will be biased and I know the system is stressed right now I guess, but does this server have a reputation for unreliability? I've been pretty disappointed with the uptime.

AFAIK this server has had 100% uptime (but I'm not the hoster so I can't say for certain. We definitely never encountered any major downtime or crash.) There are hourly restarts to fix the image service, maybe that's what you're referring to? Those only last a few moments and other instances, like lemmy.world, do it too. (In fact they do it at every 30 minutes, which we've considered doing too)

Join a smaller instance and enjoy the wonderful stability of a system not under constant stress. I haven’t had any trouble with uptime.

Obviously it’ll get better as things stabilize and Lemmy matures to deal with load balancing. Might take some time for the bigger instances though.

According to Lemmy Explorer this server has 100% uptime, if you are still having problems with this specific instance, consider switching to a somewhat more popular instance.

This is why I have 4 accounts on 4 different instances. If one goes down I just start browsing on the other. 😀 👍

Lemmy.ml is one of the biggest instances so if you're looking for something that performs more reliably maybe avoid the bigger ones (lemmy.ml, beehaw, lemmy.world, etc.) and find one with a smaller user base. This are likely to be "bumpy" for a while as admins and devs figure stuff out and resolve problems.

I'm on sh.itjust.works which has definitely been getting bigger and has had occasional slowness. I mostly just picked it because I thought the name was funny and they're powered by renewable energy, but with the federated nature of Lemmy your account could be on any federated Lemmy and you could use all the others from there.

Depends on the instance though this one comes up as 100% uptime (or at least close enough to 100% that downtime was hardly noticeable). You can use a Lemmy intance browser to get on idea on overall uptime if you like e.g. https://lemmyverse.net/?order=active

I haven't had any loading issues at all.

The biggest issue I've seen so far is that content sometimes doesn't refresh as often as that other site.

So far I'm liking wefwef a lot, though that has nothing to do with your downtime. I find myself scrolling through All, I guess while I build up my preferred communities

Guess I should have been more specific, I thought this was just a thread for lemmy.fmhy.ml "instance" An instance is just another word for a fediverse server correct? This particular instance has been down for hours at a time within the past few days. I guess it doesn't really matter so much which instance I hop on though? That's part of the point? I just need to me more quick to switch instances in my app if having difficulty connecting.

Basically. If you go to a certain website, that's one instance, and if you go to another website (that's also on Lemmy), that's a different one.

Are you sure you're talking about this one (And you're on this site?) Double checked it isn't your own internet? By "down" do you mean some posts don't work, all posts, or you can't access the site at all? Also, are you far from where the server is hosted from, which is Europe?

Just get a site is down message on connect. Accessing through browser also gives failed connection. No problems on my end.

Very strange especially since we've had 100% uptime. Only issue we've had was with image uploads which has been resolved for posts.

Well the only possibility is that it's a DNS or VPN issue, cause like Kai said, we haven't had any downtime, let alone one that lasts hours at a time.

I've never experienced this one being down since I signed up during the Reddit exodus. I seem to have an account at division by zero, but login always just spins. Tried to make account at sh.itjust.works, but it was havoc at the time. As others have said, as long as you can login somewhere, you can participate everywhere.

I am on a relatively small instance and have had zero sluggishness or delays. Don’t jump on someone’s decade old laptop with a thousand other users.
