Hit the 'Create Community' button, fill in the fields, upload a pic, and finally hit the 'Create' button.

One browser loops my insertion point back to the Name field after hitting the Create button.

The other browser does nothing, no response to the Create button.

I've created another community on a different identity. But am enjoying no success on lemmy.fmhy.ml

Any ideas why and how to fix this?

I've been wondering for a while why no one was responding to anything I was putting on reddit- I was putting different questions into niche community groups and was very shocked to see that no one was interacting.

Today I learned that I had actually been shadowbanned from reddit for some reason. For those of you who don't know, that essentially means that I had been banned from participating in conversation by creating posts or comments, but I had no idea that was the case since on my end it looked like everything was posted and visible to the public. They don't give you a reason though, but since I mostly lurked and the only thing I ever did post wise was try to ask some questions in various hobby groups, I have no idea why I was chosen for a ban.

To say I am angry at reddit is an absolute understatement. I will never darken the doorframe of that platform again, and I am so thankful that we have this platform with much more liberty to converse and contribute to our little communities on the internet.

Thank you all for being here and making the internet a place where open discussions can be held between everyone again.

First post, honest question.

Who will pay for lemmy? There were a few sites that started sometime back because they were fed up with something about reddit but eventually they all crashed because they had no funds. How will lemmy be different?

If I create a community, is it expected that I'll moderate it? I've thought of a couple of communities I'd like to create, but I also don't have any interest in moderating.

By unanimous vote, the choice falls to you. What animal do you choose to send and why? it can be the baby form of the animal or the fully grown adult version.

One small issue I have with Lemmy inbox rss is if I ser my poll rate to say ever 10 min there are times I may see a new message early and mark it as read. However 10 min later I get a new notification for the notification I just read from my inbox.

Sorted syntax and unsorted seem to be same file with no changes.

Any ideas?

Total Lemmy newb. RIF refuge and not going back to reddit. I'm sure responses here will be biased and I know the system is stressed right now I guess, but does this server have a reputation for unreliability? I've been pretty disappointed with the uptime.

Edit scratch that, it looks like a server load issue (posts are slowly trickling in). That being said still curious on where kbin's instance list is.

Hi guys I recently found a new community called floating is fun on kbin. Problem however is I can really only see one post when using lemmy.fmhy.ml.

https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/c/[email protected]

by contrast lemmy.world https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

Unlike lemmy which there is a instance tab to determine fediration blocks. I'm not sure where in kbin to look for such information.

Not sure if discrepencey is due to say server load or a federation ban.

I’ve noticed that a certain hate filled instance is showing up in my “all” feed and would rather not see losers complaining and hating.

I'll start. I'm sorry but California Love is a boring ass song.

The first ten seconds of the beat is amazing, but then it just gets so repetitive. The flows sound uninspired and the lyrics aren't anything special.

I do respect that's its a classic West Coast anthem, but damn if that song don't put me to sleep 😴😴😴

I'm guessing this is the place to post this? Even though my reddit app is still working due to the creator trying to keep it up out of pocket, I've decided to delete reddit for good. I wasn't originally planning on joining lemmy but I have no real social media anymore so I figured I'd give it a shot. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting started here?

When I say "out there" I mean books that cover topics and perspectives that are rarely hyped up in popular conversations around what people read. Like everyone can find a popular video recommending self-help productivity nonfiction or YA #relatable fiction but a recent fiction book that blew me away was "I'm thinking of ending things", it got a movie adaptation on Netflix but after the movie came out very little conversations about the book carried on. Fair warning, the book "I'm thinking of ending things" is a horrifically bleak exploration into the mental state of someone contemplating suicide at the end of his life and his reflections about himself and his mistakes throughout the years are not helpful if you're looking for a good time. But I've never seen a story go that far in depicting someone's mental state in that kind of situation so it blew me away but is also underrated imho.

I think today was the closing of the API, right? So all the bot reposts on Lemmy should go away now? I'm looking forward to posts from Lemmings dominating my feed again.

Was trying to watch something about a gun that I was looking at in a forum, and the link led to a youtube video that wouldn't play.

I was puzzled, but then I noticed that the video said it was for members only. I was perplexed, and I subscribed to the channel, but obviously that's not what it meant. I needed to be some sort of paid member to view the video.

I guess we're in the stages of the internet where things that were once free, and a sort of wild west as it were, like youtube, are becoming so monetized that eventually I just won't have to worry about wasting time watching youtube because there is no way that I'm buying a subscription just to watch short form factor videos.

Anybody else experienced this?

I've tried to log back in to Jerboa this morning and the login fails. Same with Liftoff. I'm sure it'll be the same with Connect, but I'm not going to logout to test. I can log out just fine on the browser page.

Hey fellow Lemmies! I recently came across a YouTube channel that posts 10 AI-generated videos every day, and it got me thinking. With the exponential growth of AI technology, experts predict that 90% of online content will be generated by AI by 2025. This means that the amount of content on YouTube and other platforms will increase significantly. But will YouTube be able to store and handle all that data?

How do you feel about this trend? Do you think YouTube and other platforms should embrace AI-generated content, or do you have concerns? Let's discuss and share our thoughts!

RANT AHEAD:

Quite a few times now, I've seen the complaint that "the news refuses to cover the story about the migrants' sinking ship and focuses on the billionaires instead".

This strikes me as totally unsurprising. 99% of all news sites are given by gathering clicks and eyeballs. The Titan story has it all:

  • Billionaires
  • Zany CEO with submarine with oddly sourced parts
  • Tie in to one of the most famous shipwrecks of all time
  • A story that's technically easy to understand (the sub went underwater and was lost, you don't need a degree in advanced physics to appreciate this)
  • Some drama because they might have been underwater without oxygen vs. instantly dead due to decompression
  • The possibility of an exciting sea rescue

vs the migrants' story

  • No one famous or of note on board
  • This is by far NOT the first vessel lost in this manner
  • No exciting twists

I'm sorry, but if I headed up a news room OF COURSE you will run the first story. It's simply more exciting. This is NOT an example of class war or a personal vendetta against the poor.

If you are one of those who think the migrants story should be more closely followed why don't YOU lead a discussion about it, volunteer your money and/or time to organizations that support migrants, etc.

It's also a really boring complaint to see, because nearly ALL of the major news outlets DID cover the story, but guess what, it is far less engaging, so it gets less attention overall.

Don't blame the news for what stories get big -- blame the public and their fascination with these stories. The news outlets are only putting out what their audience wants to see.

Feel free to start a site that talks only about migration issues, but I think you'll find it way harder to make money vs talking about clickbait.

Imagine if there were Tor-enabled Lemmy instances, allowing users to share direct media links without any restrictions. The thought alone is enough to make me salivate. Do you think there will be any instances like these if the developers make it possible?
