A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?

Virgil is a fraud and a sellout.

In this household we only read Lucretius.

spoilerFeel free to post your favourite Latin author below! Every answer is accepted, except Cicero. Fuck Cicero.

Can Plutarch come to chill?

Of course!

I'm not familiar with his other works, but I loved reading through his Parallel Lives and was a bit saddened when it ended. Sure, they are not really historically accurate, but damn if they aren't entertaining!

Would you recommend reading his other works?

Seneca my beloved :D

And I guess those at 196 might like Petronius

Stoicism is never a light read, but it does offer some good advice! I wouldn't consider myself a stoic by any means, but I carry some of their teachings with me.

I think you mean "Every answer, except Cicero, is accepted"

Honest question: what's the difference? Is it a joke? English is not my first language and I'd gladly take the chance to learn something new.

Just a lame joke about Cicero's fondness of nested statements and putting the verb as far into the sentence as possible XD

Ha! I briefly considered it to be a joke, but then started overthinking it too much. Now I feel dumb :D

Even Virgil prefers Homer.
