Itβs not really suprising. They are the ones that directly border russia.
(Norway and Sweden donβt but they are right next to Russia by sea and Russian Navy regularly sails into their waters and bullies them.)

Ah, sweet. I believe Finland joined Nazis after the winter war. Fascinatingly enough, during the winter war, the country that was on the side of Nazis was ... Soviet Union!
I'm still fascinated that soviets managed to play a victim card in a war that they started themselves.
I mean, it had non-aggression pact right in the name. They did cooperate in splitting up Poland, but given the history, rhetoric and eventual actions of both sides you'd be hard pressed to seriously argue they were of a side.

Finland stood pretty much alone against Russia at least compared to the support Ukraine has gotten and has.
Yup this, nazis were fighting soviets so basically in the eyes of the finns, they were liberated, same with the majority of the baltics. Soviets were a much bigger problem for eastern europe than nazis. But nazis ended up being just as bad.
Germans were historically decent rulers while russians were always terrible. Besides the countries recently had won their independence that russia made a legal contract to uphonor. Few years later they invaded and annexed them and instantly started committing atrocities.
There was nobody fighting russians but the nazis and nazis lied they would gurantee independence once the war is over.
Speaking as a baltic guy, for us the best rulers were swedes. We have been ruled by swedes, danes, russians, germans and poles. And we only have one saying here βgood old swedish timesβ.
Yes swedish golden age was a thing but swedes haven't been in their "crimes against humanity and invasions" phase for a while, so I didnt feel like they were relevant to mention.

In Poland we do learn about the Swedish Deluge, but I think these days people mostly think of swedes in terms of meatballs and furniture.

I am not discussing Finland specifically, but this point needs to be raised. How was the USSR any better than the Nazis?

The Soviet Union (especially pre-Khrushev) was an atrocious entity. This includes both Stalin, Lenin and the people who ruled in between. They are monsters.
The Soviets even collaborated with Nazis in the first two years of WW2.
@Skiluros well, there's still an argument that they were better in that their specific goal wasn't to wipe out large parts of the population and enslave all the rest based on racial criteria. Obviously the soviets were still terrible even if they were slightly better than the absolute evil that was the Nazis.
And the Holodomor didn't have a specific goal to killing a large part of the Ukrainian population?
@Skiluros Possibly, there's no consensus on it being a genocide but some scholars do make the argument. But even accepting that as a given it still falls short of the Nazi goals as the scope is more limited so it doesn't really matter for what I said.
And I reiterate that still isn't to say the Soviet regime wasn't totalitarian, murderous, brutal etc. It's like choosing between the plague and cholera.
No consensus? That's like arguing there is no consensus that the holocaust was a genocide.
The holodomor and the mass killing by both Lenin and Stalin are very much a consensus historical fact.

@Skiluros you're just wrong on that one. There exists much more of a consensus on the Holocaust being a genocide than the Holodomor being one. That is if we are speaking in strictly academic terms. The general public tends to use the term much more loosely in numerous contexts...
Nice try trying to portray me as the "ignorant public". There is enough serious academic consensus on the Holodomor being a Soviet-created genocide. Stalin and Lenin were mass murderers. The whole Soviet regime was a bunch of brutal authoritarians that lacked humanity. This is historical fact.

There is no academic consensus on the Holodomor. There is no academic consensus that Stalin killed more Soviet civilians than Hitler (with Lenin being close too). None at all!
And under no condition should we use our brains (that's the sole prerogative of ikuturso the final arbitrator of historical consensus) and recognize that tankie academics (or russians) denying the Holodomor is irrelevant to historical consensus.
Nor should we recognize that tankies denying the Holodomor are going to be using the holocaust as a cover for their murderous polemics.

Believe it or not, you can condemn killing of Jews (and Poles), while also recognizing that the USSR was a brutal, genocidal shithole. And it's not solely Stalin, Lenin and his thugs were just as bad.

It was after winter war which happened in 1939. Finland was allied with nazi Germany from 1940 to 1944
The winter war was largely independent as I understand. Finland took all aid since they got invaded. Nazi Germany had given Finland to the USSR zone of influence.
