"Let's see if doom-scrolling the imminent collapse of the world order as we know it manages to lull me into a peaceful slumber."

[–] [email protected] 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sometimes I need distractions from my own thoughts to clear my head so I can sleep.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Since being diagnosed with ADHD I finally accepted that all the common advice for sleeping doesn't work on me. If I get stuck in hyper focus a bit of phone time can break it long enough to switch off.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

In a pinch, flipping the pillow to the cool side and getting up to pee has been helpful for my ADHD ass.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Being neurodivergent in general has meant that basically all the "common sense" personal advice doesn't apply to me I've learned

"Struggling to be productive? Just remove all distractions!" Nope, doesn't work, never worked. In fact it makes it worse

"Struggling to sleep? Just try XYZ and keep a regular sleep schedule!", nope, do my own thing, works better

"Struggling with burnout/exhaustion? You need to go and do things!" Nope, that will make it worse

And so on and so on

Brain rot > being alone with my thoughts

As long as it’s not doom-scrolling it ain’t so bad

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago

...you're so right that I hate it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

At least it's strangely comforting in a way to know that other people seem to feel the same way

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Be like Spike.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

It depends for me. Meditation has made just chilling without input much easier.

But sometimes if I can't fall asleep the best antidote is something to distract me like a story or some new tech discussion online. ❤️

Me: I need to go to sleep.
Also me: This 3 hour video about islands in the shape of dogs looks interesting.

If you liked this, you should check out my other video about islands in the shape of cats "--> here" or a video about islands in the shape of birds "<-- here"

Oops now I'm doom scrolling.

Most importantly, if you're not using a "night mode" display filter to force the tint to the red side of things w the screen, your phone (and all monitors and tv's) projects light in the blue end of the spectrum, which mirrors sunlight, which tells your brain it is not time to sleep.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There is real science behind that. However, tech companies just created an adjacent flavor filter of dubious actual value to increase user engagement and avoid potential lawsuits.

People have read books in bed for centuries without issue via all sorts of light sources.

It's all down to good lifestyle behavior.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well to be fair, the lights used to be candles and then incandescent bulbs, now it's led that also emits blue light

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

That doesn't change the fact tech companies just marketed it as an excuse to make one feel it is now "safe" to use their phone in bed in a flim-flam interpretation of science. You ever look at those blue filters on phones? Blue is still very present.

Books still exist, other non-blue reading mediums, as do non-blue lights. Thus the "real science behind that" part.

When I can’t sleep, I just stay awake all night and spend the next day suffering for that action.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

I stay awake all day to punish myself for not sleeping at night.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah sounds like you use light mode

[–] ryedaft 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

People talking about light mode and completely ignoring that every app launches with a completely white screen, brighter than the sun.

[–] prettybunnys 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Nope. No clue what that guy is talking about.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

YSK:

Night color shifting is great, but grayscale is even better at helping your brain settle the fuck down.

Extra-dim accessibility modes like Reduce White Point on iOS are useful for everyone.

Stick both of these on an accessibility shortcut and they’ll push you toward a textier, less scrolly use of your device, which will also help you go the fuck to sleep.

Put on whatever nature sounds you prefer. Rain, crashing waves, thunderstorms; all of these have helped me as a graveyard worker with earplugs in plus the background nature noise to help mitigate when lawnmowing or leafblowing is happening outside my apartment.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Rain and thunderstorms used to be nice for me... used to.

7ish years ago we (wife and I) rescued a pitbull mix. Well three of them, but only one has an issue.

Wind, planes, rain, thunder, all of that kicks on the fight or flight response to 110%.

If she is crated, she will try to bust out to the point of injuring herself. At our hold house we had a two story, she broke through a banister spindle and nearly fell to the ground floor. Hard wood. Would have been bad. We've found her in the top loading washing machine - it was closed. She will try to go through solid objects. Walls, doors, windows, whatever.

CBD is about the only thing that helps her. We've tried various medications through the vet, even one they use as a sedative per-surgery.

Its been raining here for about two weeks, on top of other issues in life, and I have a migraine that may just kill me at this point. Not to mention sleep deprivation.

Also, as current day shift at my new job - I hate it, I want to go back to graveyard shifts, lol. Though, I did get some comments when I stopped at a liquor store right after they opened. Once they realized I worked overnight, they used it to mess with OTHER customers, lol.

Luckily my dog was a puppy with noisy kids so he doesn't get too stressed by thunder. He does go to his doggy bed and growl really low to ward off the demons

[–] multiplemigs 1 points 2 weeks ago

reduce white point mode, good book, and i'm out in 30ish. you guys seriously just full blasting brightness in to your face trying to sleep?!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

On the waking side of reading the alien enemies act will be enacted April 20, but I don’t see how that’s any better.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

Dunno how but playing Hearts on my phone in bed actually does lull me to sleep.

I wish the internet could even come anywhere close to all of the useful information in the world. The vast majority of human knowledge, practical or otherwise, is published with a serious price tag.

At the same time I acknowledge that this information requires funds.

Truly a vicious cycle.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I disagree

There is more usefull information freely availabe than any human could ever learn.

Most of the stuff behind paywalls is cutting edge research of the last couple of years.

So most likely nothing ordinary humans need or want to know

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 weeks ago

I still think all the good textbooks aren't frequently pirated, because tbh who tf gonna buy a $400 minimum book and scan every page?

[–] [email protected] -2 points 2 weeks ago

Your phone doesn't actually contain much information, its merely a hand-terminal into the actual data on servers.
