As someone from Northern Ireland, the American usage always seemed weird to me

It made sense when the party was formed during the civil war. Republicans believed in a strong unifying federal government, rule of the Republic vs rule of the individual states.

I mean, it still makes sense, there's nothing wrong with it, it just feels weird

Ehhh, in a modern sense they're kind of on the other side. Trump is doing his best to dismantle the feds, after all.

A major spiritual crises is no laughing matter. If you or your loved ones experience this, please donate to the gop for indulgences and peace of mind.

Also if you do this in the next 30 days, you can use my special code of “scam” to get 10% off your first mega indulgence pack

I've never seen a MAGA in Ireland (didn't exist back then) but given how much we were taking the piss of the average American, I expect things would get pretty epic if one of those morons came over these days. Mighty craic would be had by all, no doubt.

Fresh off the boat and desperately trying to blend in with the locals for fear of being deported right back, perhaps :D

they are confusing it with IRA?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Not really my area of expertise, but it's a bit broader than just the IRA specifically: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_republicanism
