On [email protected] things are still going pretty good!

  • We're up to 78 subscribers from 47 when I started posting 10 days ago during the March tournament. For a niche comm, that's solid. Occasionally others are making comments and 1 person made a post.
  • Unfortunately lemmy.world updated their server software and now the thumbnail images that I was making for youtube videos don't propagate there... And sumo is a very visual sport, so I think that's a major loss to casual browsers who might be enticed to check it out. I tried making an alt account on lemmy.world to make the posts from there (since I think the thumbnails work on the same server they're posted on?) but am still trying to make that happen.
  • Weirdly, one of my lemmy posts was federated to Mastodon? Check this out: https://mastodon.social/@[email protected]/114166860518065085 It's not something I intentionally did so I don't know why that one was federated and not the others. HYPOTHESIS: Maybe because @[email protected] commented on it and maybe lemmy.zip has some setting that does it automatically? Also noted that my response to tigeruppercut's comment did not federate to mastodon. Not sure wtf is going on there.

In other news, on [email protected] things are still relatively active. Most of the recent posts are by @Hermit_[email protected], and I'm not posting unless there are at least two other posts since my last post. There were a couple other people posting in the last 2 weks and commenting occasionally tho. Luckily Bandcamp thumbnail images are automatically made and working OK.

Hey, I got the @ notification from your comment this time. I don't have a mastadon acct so I'm not sure, but I haven't seen any announcement about zip posts/comments auto-reposting over there. When I click your link it takes me to a redirect page on mastadon that goes back to lemmy. Anyway, thanks for posting so diligently over there this basho. I hope the sumo board doesn't find that dondonsumo youtuber anytime soon-- so many accounts have been taken down over the years despite them not putting out any official way to watch outside Japan (except the NHK highlights).

BTW you see the dude in the white suit and fedora sitting ringside every day for the past week? Not easy getting those tix! (I found him in the bg of a pic over on reddit)

Things have felt pretty damn good around crazypeople.online but lets review-

[email protected] Still tops the list. Last week we had just over 100 subscribers, this week we're sitting at >160 and the activity around the community shows it. Fucking bravo everyone. Legends, all of you.

[email protected] Has a mirror trajectory. Last week just under 100 subscribers, this week we are just under 160 awesome people to hang out with. Activity is up here as well. Great stuff!

[email protected] moves up a spot this week from around 60 subscribers last week, up to nearly 90 this week. @[email protected] is churning out low effort masterpieces like a kindergarten class with finger paints. What more could we ask for? Whenever you guys are done eating paste come show him your appreciation and hang your own low effort artwork on the wall!

[email protected] moves down a slot but still saw impressive growth for our small instance. Last week we had around 60 subscribers and this week we're over 70. The activity is up here too with weekly trading opportunities (IT'S TODAY!) posted by @[email protected] and @[email protected] filling us in with news and updates. Come check out the cool stuff we've been pulling and maybe pickup a card or two you've been hunting!

[email protected] is still working on breaking into the 50 subscriber club. With the return of F1 we've had more of that type of content being posted, but anything and everything auto racing is more than welcome.

Impressive!

It's very slow because there are basically no Koreans on Lemme, I'm not even a mod on this community but 90% of the posts are mine, the mod/admin basically never posts, very few comments but at least some upvotes :D

Quite happy with the grow of [email protected]

Thank you @[email protected] and other people who post there

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

Thanks Blaze you've worked hard and it shows. It's a really nice place to hang out,

Getting a bit frustrated about the BuyEuropean / BuyfromEU situation. Now there's even another one, [email protected]. I tried to bring the argument that too many communities on a niche topic splinter discussion with the admin, but they still want to keep their community open.

[email protected] for people interested

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Don't be (it will not help you and it won't change a thing). Not forgetting that they're free to do whatever they want. No one is right or wrong, it's just... not ideal as it is ;)

Also, seeing how this is becoming kinda trendy topic relayed outside Lemmy I would not be surprised to see even more appearing. Say 'use-european' 'Support-european' 'made-in-Europe' (this one has my preference :p) and their obvious mirrors 'made-in-the-EU', 'support-the-EU', and so on.

I don't know about the other users but I can't be bothered with too many similar communities (2 is really a maximum as far as I'm concerned, after that it's just a mess that requires way too much time/energy from me to get anything out of it). So, I will ignore trends and focus on those communities whose moderation/participation I appreciate the most ;)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My main frustration comes from the fact that instead of building a community together, we're competing with the 3 different versions of the same community

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 hours ago

Yeah, that's what it feels like indeed 😅

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Have you considered asking the similar communities to link to their counterparts in the sidebar? At least that way no matter what one you discover first you can find the rest pretty easily.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The usually do, but that doesn't address the main issue: discussion splintering

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think it's something that more people are going to have to decide is a problem to make major headway. There's a lot of instance tribalism on Lemmy and I think that makes people reluctant to consolidate right now. One group is complaining about instances that are too large, another that more communities should be folded into one place. Both can be correct, but it's a hard sell after people have invested time and effort into another space. In time people will either adapt to checking multiple communities or they'll come around to share your point of view.

it’s a hard sell after people have invested time and effort into another space.

I get that, but here the new community is brand new.

A topic I've thought about too. (just joined lemmy and was bit confused to why they dont merge somehow)

EDIT: Maybe be more distinct and communicate in very aggressive ways what's unique that the other community doesnt have. Thoughts?

In this case, all three are almost identical

[–] can 2 points 21 hours ago

Sometimes they do state it somewhere, either in the community info or in the stickied post. Other times when the alternative is on an instance that some users distrust then it's more implied.

Happy to see the TV communities consolidated on [email protected]

@[email protected], thank you for your post there!

And the subs have gone from like 100 to 250 in a day (or less than) 👍

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

More than 550 monthly active users 👍

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[email protected] keeps on growing (437 users, today), but still very little participation.

I'm counting on the new subscribers to make a difference in the long run as I imagine most of the old user base is AFK like the original admin/creator (there were approx 200-230 users when I was given the keys to the community, and it had been hibernating for at the very least a whole year before I started posting). Hopefully with the number of new users steadily growing, and them becoming less 'new' a few should start participate more ;)

Sort of a reversal of last time, [email protected] has more or less stayed constant at 78 subscribers, while [email protected] is only 3 away from 100, and has had a few posts from other people so far. Did try to reach out to the albumartporn community mod, but didn't get a reply yet.

Still happy with the overall progress, though.

I immediately subbed to the haiku comm :)
