The furniture looks great, but I can only imagine it smelling like an ashtray

In the 1960s, you would be smoking too, and wouldn’t smell it.

Not everyone smoked. Only 70% of people...

good point, didn't think of how bad it would smell. My uncle who smokes cigars has made his entire 4 floor house smell like a cigar shop... it's nasty

Mid-century modernism was always my favorite

Mid-century modernism

Thanks for giving me a name for it! :)

You’ll find it often abbreviated MCM in listings. Just a heads up, you’re not alone. Vintage MCM furniture can be pricey.

Much of the design for the wood furniture was borrowed from Danish cabinetry. You may have an easier time finding reasonably priced second-hand Danish furniture than a vintage MCM piece by Lane.

No shit it can be expensive. Even a reproduction Eams Group Management Chair can go for nearly $1000.

Fun fact, the Eams Group Management Chairs seen in Mad Men (like Don’s desk chair) are actually real/vintage ones.

Mid-century modern design is based off of both Bauhaus (German) design and De Stijl (danish) design styles in the post-war era.

Dan Draper is gifted and talented, but he’s also a raging prick.

I've been re watching this show in the last week or two, and it's kind of hard for me to enjoy, because to me EVERYONE seems fairly horrible. I guess the audience is supposed to try to feel some compassion for the characters, but it mostly seems like a guilty pleasure viewing experience, and I'm supposed to be entertained by how messed up everyone is.

The production quality is just amazing though. Like the OP mentions, stuff just looks great...it's a nicely stylized take on what the early 60's were kind of like.

First time I tried watching it and gave up on a day. Idk why it stuck this time, it’s just fun!

I remember, back when the show was airing, reading that the producers were extremely committed to authenticity. Apparently they went so far as, for example, producing ice chunks the same way they were back then so that they would look correct in the cups. (Sorry I don't remember the details, it was a good while back.)

Yeah. That's kind of the point, he's supposed to be a prick.

I read that as Mad Max and was struggling to think what furniture in that might be called "classy"

[–] Tar_alcaran 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Excuse you, Tina Turner dresses classy as fuck!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Does she wear a table?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Calling Tina Turner furniture ain't cool

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Could have meant mad max one-three

I had the chance to go to a used furniture store a few months back that specialized in mid-century modern. All of the piece that they had were authentic, from the 50s and 60s.

...That shit is really uncomfortable. It looks great, but goddamn.

Not everyone dresses nice. Peggy doesn't at first. Many of the secretaries don't. The hippies dresses differently for sure. Some are nice but not all and I wouldn't consider any of them chic. Honestly, though, most of the people you see are more than just well off.

Kind of important to remember that you're not watching a documentary, fam.
