The speed at which these people are capitulating is alarming. I mean it took them decades to even begin to do any kind of rainbow capitalism and they all ditched it like a hot potato in a split second.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 4 hours ago

When you go to report an issue, and select “Name is wrong”, the send button never activates, whereas “something else” will.

So this is a bit of capitulation that seems to be hard coded and they just don’t want to hear about it.

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

Do you guys not realize that this reaction is literally one of the reasons they do this? To be a distraction and to show their base that they made the bad people™ cry about it.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

For me, it's the blatant racism with some fascist nationalism thrown in.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I think you're under thinking this.

The primary focus of Trump since coming to office has been securing natural resources. Greenland, Canada, Ukraine all have rich mineral deposits. Even the Panama shit is about controlling a geographic "resource"...the canal.

This rename is about making it sound like it belongs to the US. What's there a lot of here? Oil. And it sits under international waters.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

The US already has a lot of rights to the oil there. but the rigs aren't pumping because despite the drill, baby, drill crap US oil companies already have too much supply. He wants them to drill just to look like they're doing more shit.

Come on man if we are crying racism over this is nonsense no-one will actually listen to us when we are actually facing real racism.

This is exactly what they want.

[–] [email protected] 55 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

This really is the dumbest timeline. I can't even make up satire shit that is more wild than what is now.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 hours ago

Just waiting for the TVA to prune us.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

It's like the shitpost version of blitzkrieg. Just overwhelming you with absolute diarrhea for the soul. And it's working, even though we all know it's happening.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 53 minutes ago

That's their plan.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

You know, I had the shitty thought that at least back before chat communication, a robber baron (or it's equal kind) had to actually hire thugs and henchmen to cause local chaos. Now it's just some tech oligarch with some bots or a paid anonymous service causing disruption.

We really got fucked over on this one. I'm really not sure how America pulls itself out of this one with the state of education and political polarization. The federal part of our government definitely isn't offering up any solutions.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

You expressed it well. The best solution to our generational crisis is one that takes a generation or so to build-up (education) and that Republicans have already spent at least a generation already tearing down. We're sitting ducks.

Reported an issue with the name. I know I’m shouting into the void on this but a small poke in the eye makes me feel better.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

I tried to do that, but it won't let me select the name of bodies of water.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 11 hours ago

Today I’ve officially made organic maps my primary. I’m gonna try to make it work.

[–] [email protected] 97 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Apple has been suppressing the resistance in russia. They dont give a fuck about freedom or democracy. It’s naive to think theyll do anything but enable trumps takeover

[–] [email protected] 58 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Of course not. They’re a corporation. We like to think they’re perhaps less evil than others, but the truth is they would harvest their users internal organs if they thought it would increase shareholder value.

Fuck Capitalism.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 14 hours ago

We’ve known since the beginning their products are made off the suffering of slave labor. Them being evil isn’t new whatsoever.

[–] Imgonnatrythis 28 points 16 hours ago

Tim Apple is literally a financial contributer to the Trump presidency. They are not being shy about their support. I'm Suprised it took them this long, but they've always been a bit behind with their maps project.

Tim Apple is a pussy bitch.

[–] [email protected] 35 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Well, yeah, because the United States Geographical Service is the source of truth for geographical names. No surprise Google and Apple follow it. There's a little more breakdown than that, but that's the gist of it.

https://www.usgs.gov/us-board-on-geographic-names/domestic-names

The change is fucking stupid, you know it, I know it, we all know it. Save your fucking ire for all the real shit going down. In comparison, this doesn't rate a single breath.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 12 hours ago

This is correct, given a new administration can simply change it back to keep it in line with the rest of the world. Won't do us much good if there isn't a next administration, though.

Still says Gulf of Mexico to me. Is the change just for American users then?

[–] IcyToes 11 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

In the UK, it says both. One above the other.

Spineless and pathetic.

In my view, the only ones that really care are the people whose opinions don't matter. The Gulf of Mexico will always be the Gulf of Mexico, regardless of what it may legally be called. Much the same way, in my view, X will always be Twitter, And Zuckerberg will always be POS.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 15 hours ago

Sears Tower

Staples Center

6th Avenue

Gulf of Mexico

I don't give a shit who thinks it should change, I'll use the original names forever

[–] [email protected] 11 points 16 hours ago

True, for me America is and has always been Wankistan

It doesn’t for me that’s weird.

Edit: if you put a pin it does show America

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 hours ago

I’m gonna put a pin in this, but I’ll come back to it later

[–] [email protected] 19 points 16 hours ago

I wish this was the in top 10 reasons to be upset with the US right now.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 13 hours ago

Well seeing as how Tim was right up there next to Sundar I'm not the least bit surprised.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Unlike Google they still have a “report issue” button active.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

And I will continue to use it until they take it away

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

They don't have to take it away, they can just set up the backend to blackhole those requests. So presence of the report issue facility does not imply they actually will ever even see the issue.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Reported it on Apple Maps as the wrong name. See how long they let reports come in.
