I think it's so funny that people think the Aztek is the ugliest car of all time, there are so many more that are actually just offensive to the eyes! Apparently the Aztek was really capable in many ways so I'd argue that helps offsets the "ugly"

I want to point out that there's an opportunity to start an educational image thread here...

Apparently, when Breaking Bad was conceived, Walter White was given an Aztek because it polled nationally as the most pathetic car to own.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Probably similar reasoning went into the PT cruiser Skylar got for Jr that completely failed to make up for having to return the charger Walt got him (iirc). Wouldn't surprise me if that car polled as the car most teens would prefer to walk over, or at least would have back when it was more culturally relevant. Kids probably see it as just another old shitty car these days, rather than a particularly shitty and ugly car.

The only thing worse than its looks was its turn radius, or at least so I've been told, since I've been lucky enough to never step foot in one.

Never really had an issue with the Aztec though tbh. Maybe because I've always put SUVs and minivans in the same category in my head and the Aztec still looked better than many of the 90s minivans. Really blows my mind that so many people like trucks and SUVs outside of their functional capabilities tbh. Like people who never use the bed of their truck or who drive an SUV without needing to regularly haul a bunch of equipment or people. But I guess that's a seperate topic.

I am shocked by how many cybertrucks I see driving around, but I suppose it makes sense given these people were probably the ones stupid enough to put down the deposit to pre-order the thing back in 2019. If you're willing to put down a deposit on a vehicle that won't come out for years, especially one that looks that terrible, then you'd be crazy enough to keep your pre-order to drive such a horrendous thing.

One benefit I do see for the owner is that it certainly draws attention, if that's what they're looking for, but I wouldn't say it's a positive attention. Some people don't care and will take all the attention they can get.

I mean, the Aztek didn't explode

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

The Aztek's trailer hitch could take more than 160 pounds before falling off.

The Aztec is a beautiful car and I will die on this hill.

I will die on this hill.

Alone, no less.

Walter White: You're goddamn right.

[–] captain_aggravated 7 points 2 days ago

You have my permission to die on that hill.

I loved mine, it had a V6, drove like a sedan and was a sweet burgundy on gray color scheme.

I was sad when the one-legged lady totaled it in front of my house while she was sleep driving.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Earl really waited too long to fix that one.

One legged before or after?

Lol yes, also after

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ah the one-legged lady strikes again. Shucks.

"I didn't total my Aztek!"

"I don't care."

Ford Edsel.

Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Smart car.

Nissan Cube.

And one of those has been rebooted for this year.

(And someone here will love at least one of them, I'm sure. This is all my (lack of) taste talking.)

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

The Nissan Cube was the closest thing we've had to a kei car since the Scion xB. I'd buy an electric version of one in a heartbeat if it didn't have telemetry.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I hope it was the Edsel!

We need a Toyota Prius.
We have Toyota Prius at home.

I don't see too many Azteks around but the more boring Buick version of them are still everywhere.

spoiler

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I didn't realize they were the Aztec stablemate.

I'm pretty sure my neighbor has one of those Buicks. It's definitely a GM SUV of that era, in white. We've lived here for 8 years, and it has been sitting in the driveway the entire time that I recall. I've never seen it moved at all.

I don't think the people that own the house actually live there full time. I see them only rarely, so I think they live elsewhere, and this is their second home. They have a second bland GM SUV parked in the driveway when they are here.

For a long time I thought the two SUVs were the exact same model, just different colors, for near-maximum blandness.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I think I prefer looking at the Aztek than this boring design.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'd personally call the Aztek uglier than the cybertruck, somehow.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 days ago (2 children)

it was actually a pretty nice car. owners, for the most part, liked their car. the laughs came from comedians, memes and shit... non-owners.

yea. the front end of the production version was stupid, though, looking like two different cars got pancaked together. the pre-production concept from '99 had a much cleaner hood and front end. the funky ass end was functional and gave visibility in a time before backup cams became a thing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

I saw the prototype at a car show before it was released, and it looked pretty cool as an off-road camper that could still be a daily driver if needed. Looked like it would have been a hit among the Midwestern hunter types near me, then it came out, they dumbed it down, and tried to sell it to soccer moms.

[–] Sineljora 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It also paved the way for the Vibe, and other hot hatchbacks

[–] prettybunnys 9 points 2 days ago

I really dislike the notion of a SUV being considered a “hot hatchback”

Especially considering the hot hatch was born in the 70s

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Bot has always enjoyed the Aztek, no idea why it gets so much hate
