Summary

Donald Trump pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada on his first day in office, blaming them for failing to stop illegal drugs and immigration.

He also vowed to add a 10% tariff on Chinese goods until drug trafficking into the U.S. ceases.

Economists warn these tariffs could drive up consumer prices and inflation.

While violent crime has declined in recent years, Trump continues to link trade measures to border security and drug issues, echoing his first-term trade policies and immigration stance.

I hope he does it. I really do. The quickest path to revolution is when people aren't just vibe struggling, it's when they're literally starving because nobody can pay for enough calories to sustain themselves. The faster we get to that point, the faster we can fix all of America's problems by deposing the oligarchs, rewriting the constitution to restore the guardrails of democracy and restructuring the government and the judiciary to serve the people and not corporations.

No balls, Trump, you fucking won't. You'll pussy out at the last minute or get bullied by another world leader with more gumption than you can muster.

It seems pretty obvious that the plan is to deliberately destroy the US economy.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Makes one wonder who would benefit from that…

[–] [email protected] 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Anyone with enough money to weather the shit storm. Look at how much money the top 1% made during Covid.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 12 hours ago

They'd just buy assets that others won't be able to afford and hoard more

[–] [email protected] 7 points 19 hours ago

I think you misspelled “create buying opportunities for the oligarchs”

/s

And Canada's and Mexico's as well.

The orange asshole just doesn't gaf about anyone but himself.

He should be first on the BBQ menu.

Adieu US economy.

[–] [email protected] 69 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm pretty sure most of the drugs coming in from Canada are in the possession of seniors who can't afford American medical care.

He doesn't give a fuck. He will avoid prison and that is all that matters to him.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh I know. I was just pointing that out considering how many of them voted for him.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

GM stocks are down 8% today.

Congratulations to all the auto workers union members who voted for Trump.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 21 hours ago

This is late stage capitalism. The oligarchs are now in charge and they are going to loot every last penny that they can then run away laughing.

Musk announced that he was going to gut NASA which directly benefits SpaceX.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 1 day ago

As soon as things go south, they'll become the Biden tariffs that the damn, dirty liberals inflicted on America.

We've always been at war with Eurasia, Eastasia is our ally.

Fentanyl, FYI, is used in hospitals and imported legally. I don't know what percentage of illegal supply is pilferage/theft from hospitals, but if fentanyl is bad, then forbid legal imports. There are a lot of media stories about healthcare professionals being caught stealing opioids. in 2020, DEA investigated 3600 drug theft cases at healthcare facilities.

OTOH, the typical overdose danger of fentanyl is using it accidentally, or it contaminating other opioids. Taking more of a weaker opioid provides the same high, afaik.

Like the new VP's mom, for example.

USA uses Tariffs.
It hurt itself in its confusion!

[–] [email protected] 60 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

100% tariffs on China!
60% tarrifs on China!

....10% tarrifs on China?

Wait a minute. You mean I ran on bad policy and now I'm learning it was all bad ideas and people voted for me?

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 day ago (6 children)

From the article

levy an additional 10% tariff on top of existing tariffs on Chinese products coming into the United States.

He's not setting the Chinese tariffs at 10%, he's adding an extra 10%.

I can guarantee you my paycheck won't increase even a single percentage.

[–] Lucidlethargy 4 points 18 hours ago

No, but we're all going to pay for this shit.

I can't tell you how many fucking idiotic Trump supporters voted for him because they thought he'd make things cheaper and better for them...

The hard times are about to really start for Americans. Just about every single reputable economist and specialist warned about this.

Anything can happen, but the chances of anything good happening at this stage are very low. Prepare now for hard times.

Nor will it bring manufacturing jobs back

[–] [email protected] 69 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Has become

[–] [email protected] 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This will look just spectacular on my grocery bill. Prolly like 75% of my produce comes from Mexico right now.

[–] [email protected] 46 points 1 day ago

Not to worry. All the farms in the US will pick up the slack thanks to all that plentiful cheap migrant labor. Oh, wait…

[–] [email protected] 94 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Republicans will spend the next two years blaming the previous Democrat government for the problems that will happen .... then spend the next two years telling everyone that if they vote for the democrats the problems will get worse.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 18 hours ago

And the mainstream media will do nothing to contradict this misinformation.

[–] [email protected] 77 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Every republican administration in my lifetime has left office in a recession.

They're simple people, many will be easily convinced that the guy in charge during the shitty time is to blame. Yes, many others will be fooled by their TV's... But I think a good deal will take things at face value.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The tariffs won't be effective on jan 20th. Certainly there will be specific ultimatums made to both countries, and it is irresponsible to set a tariff date, and then later "negotiate the specific threats/ultimatums" to reverse the tariffs. There are government agencies that need to prepare for policy.

Specific to Canada, there is a long history of free trade with comparable wages in auto sector, such that even some parts are shipped across the border for processing and shipped back. A conflict of interest with Musk, is that he doesn't mind destroying North American Auto sector, or big 3 anyway.

Trump himself signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (which replaced NAFTA) in his first term ensuring tariff free trade between the 3 nations. So Canada and Mexico are about to learn the lesson that trump's own signed legislation doesn't hold water.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 21 hours ago

Looks like Mexico and Canada will get to enjoy some free and prosperous trade between two abiding nations with a beligerant middle child crying about it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 22 hours ago

That ended up as pretty minimal changes to NAFTA after a giant fuss.

[–] [email protected] 54 points 1 day ago (8 children)

Ah, yes. Canada, where all the people who have social services, healthcare, and general peace, without fear of daily shootings, try to escape from.

I wonder where all the drugs in Canada come from.(aside from weed. Everyone I know grows at home now)

Trump is not making America great. He's trying to destabilize the western economic system.

Okay, but are you going to stimulate US manufacturers to fill in the vacuum you'll create? Unless manufacturers have somewhere else to get their materials from, this will just result in shortages of everything.

We're gonna be seeing empty shelves in stores again. But there'll be no new virus to explain it this time.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 18 hours ago

Trump doesn’t understand this. Or if he does, he doesn’t care. He won’t starve. The poor will.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 19 hours ago

Well with RFK Jr in charge, we probably will have a new virus (or an old one coming back) on top of it all.
