It's actually worse than the headline suggests. He was explicitly asked to clarify it in the context of "people are saying you want to subvert democracy". He then refused to and repeated the statment

Can't claim it's "just a joke" or taken out of context when the context is someone asking you if you plan to subvert democracy

"It’s being interpreted, as you are not surprised to hear, by the left as, well, they’re never going to have another election,” she said. “So can you even just respond —”

Mr. Trump cut her off, claiming again that Christians “vote in very small percentages,” and digressing into how he would change voting practices.

He then repeated his statement from Friday once more, saying his message had been: “Don’t worry about the future. You have to vote on Nov. 5. After that, you don’t have to worry about voting anymore. I don’t care, because we’re going to fix it. The country will be fixed and we won’t even need your vote anymore, because frankly we will have such love, if you don’t want to vote anymore, that’s OK.”

He’s going to keep saying it while people keep reporting it so urgently. Anything to get back into the news after the Dem’s stole the spotlight for a bit.

“I said, vote for me, you’re not going to have to do it ever again. It’s true,” he said. “Because we have to get the vote out. Christians are not known as a big voting group. They don’t vote. And I’m explaining that to them. You never vote. This time, vote. I’ll straighten out the country, you won’t have to vote anymore. I won’t need your vote.”

This is just total nonsense. Christians don't vote? Yeah, right. I get that he's trying to come up with an explanation for basically saying he's going to cancel future elections if he wins, but saying his fan base has a low voter turnout is an absurd justification.

He’s always been the one to say the quiet part out loud.

I guess this is also what is alienating some of the republicans. If he takes power, it's no longer a matter of being red or blue, or gerrymandering and cheating their way to success, it'd only be about being loyal to the fascist regime and hoping to be rewarded. It's a complete loss of control for everyone but Trump. Even the bootlickers will be in his grace, except he has none, and they know it.

It's simply not worth it for republicans. Trump is not a republican. He's a celebrity gone fascist. He took over their party because they couldn't unite on anything else but opposition.

The regime wouldn't last long though. Trump is old and unhealthy. It's very likely that another term would be the end of him. What happens to their plan then?

Truth is, he doesn't give a shit about the next election in 2028. He just wants the power to clear off the criminal records right now.

Even if someone wanted democracy to go away, it's an easy promise for Trump to make, but it's unlikely he'll see it through or that anyone else could do it successfully.

The weirdo is being really explicit that the Republican party is going to convert the country into a Guided Democracy where how people vote doesn’t impact who holds power.
