I guess this is also what is alienating some of the republicans. If he takes power, it's no longer a matter of being red or blue, or gerrymandering and cheating their way to success, it'd only be about being loyal to the fascist regime and hoping to be rewarded. It's a complete loss of control for everyone but Trump. Even the bootlickers will be in his grace, except he has none, and they know it.
It's simply not worth it for republicans. Trump is not a republican. He's a celebrity gone fascist. He took over their party because they couldn't unite on anything else but opposition.
The regime wouldn't last long though. Trump is old and unhealthy. It's very likely that another term would be the end of him. What happens to their plan then?
Truth is, he doesn't give a shit about the next election in 2028. He just wants the power to clear off the criminal records right now.
Even if someone wanted democracy to go away, it's an easy promise for Trump to make, but it's unlikely he'll see it through or that anyone else could do it successfully.
All it takes is a Court and a Republican-majority Congress that go along, and it's very clear that they're willing to do so if he asks.
That's the point. He takes bribes and will die soon. That means the billionaire class funding him can control him or just wait for his inevitable heart attack.
