So, the owner of this specific store posted it. As much as I hate how Loblaws has been capitalizing on peoples’ needs, this isn’t Loblaws, it’s the owner of one store.

But this also breaks labour laws. For-profit organizations can’t hire volunteers because it breaks minimum wage laws. An exception would be an internship for school.

Best thing to do is report it.

Do you know that for sure? I found this from seven months ago, if it's the same manager, he seems to be getting away with it:

Pharmacy Assistant vs Volunteer

I've applied to about 15 SDM branches across Toronto for the past month until today. My applications were mixed. Even if I applied online, I also visit the branch to personally drop my resume. There was this one branch who told me that it's nearly impossible to get inside SDM as a pharmacy assistant without Canadian pharmacy experience. I was a licensed pharmacist in my home country and I practiced clinical pharmacy for over 2 years.

According to him, the best way to get in the system and their records will be as a volunteer. He was kinda of disappointed with how the system works, claiming that SDM encourages volunteerism to save a lot on training costs. Is it true that being a volunteer will help me out once there is a vacancy or an opening for a pharmacy assistant slot? Can I use it on my future applications as well?

It sounds like the Labour Relations Board should be made aware of this branch.

Yea because Loblaws certainly doesn't have corporate control of its stores...

[-] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

They do. It’s likely that they aren’t aware that this store is trying to pull something illegal. Another form of action is to message Loblaws about this to make them aware.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

They know. They only care if it makes the news cycle.

What kind of exploitative capitalism do we have in Canada? And how is this allowed? This is utterly ridiculous!

[-] [email protected] 39 points 2 months ago

And how is this allowed?

It isn't.

[-] [email protected] 37 points 2 months ago

Surprise, they're owned by Loblaws

[-] [email protected] 17 points 2 months ago

As mentioned, this is so far just one criminal at just one store.

Loblaws can appear like total dicks at times, but this isn't necessarily them. Render unto Caesar.

We are reaching the final logical conclusions of capitalism with Canadian characteristics.

They will allow Amazon to build their " all inclusive " worksites where the workers can't actually leave. These megacorporations are more powerful then the state is.

Welcome to the cyberpunk future.

Welcome to the Hudson Bay Company.

If you think this is bad, look more into the Canadian temporary foreign worker program which a UN report recently called modern day slavery: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/un-special-rapporteur-migrant-worker-program-modern-form-of-slavery-1.6958592

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah it's not just Canada. It's done in every industrialized country. They do this in Europe including Scandinavian countries where they import African labor for agriculture (for instance they bring in African pickers for blue berries, etc). Same in Japan and Korea I believe.

[-] [email protected] 30 points 2 months ago

Oh, just what Loblaws needs right now, more good press

[-] [email protected] 29 points 2 months ago

Now this is an advanced take on, "Nobody wants to work." Amaze yourself at the extreme feats of mental gymnastics! Marvel at the sheer audacity of these bold pioneers of industry!

[-] [email protected] 22 points 2 months ago

Please tell me this is a joke.

Yes, here's another joke (you might be able to see the first couple of reviews without logging in):

That's a new low. What could be next? Loblaw asks employees to pay them for each hour they spend in their stores as some sort of redevance?

[-] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago

The employees are using parking spots that should be going to paying customers.

That Keurig in the break room? It costs money to run.

These are the kind of things that keep us business owners up at night.

They paid more and care more about the ad than they do for human beings.

[-] [email protected] 15 points 2 months ago

But think of all of the valuable experience you will get to put on your resume!

[-] [email protected] 13 points 2 months ago

As per labour law, this is legal as long as their duties don’t overlap with paid employees

[-] [email protected] 53 points 2 months ago

Based on the job description, it sounds like every one of their tasks overlaps with paid employees...

[-] [email protected] 21 points 2 months ago

If there are no paid employees then there is no overlap.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

Nice., 🙂

[-] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago

I had a really hard time parsing the title. Though it meant that Shoppers were drugging Mart Recruiting Volunteers (whatever that is) in order to get their stores staffed.

I need more coffee.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago

Well, great another cross post to a boring dystopia. Thanks loblaws

[-] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

Seems the page is gone. Either taken down due to backlash, or it was an error. I wouldn't put it past corporate using an AI to spit out a listing and then not even reading it to check for accuracy.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Do they give me free drugs in exchange? Which ones?

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You get to take the extra pills home at the end of the day, like a heat lamp in a fast food place after close
