This is a part-time on-site volunteer role at Shoppers Drug Mart in Toronto, ON. As a volunteer, you will be responsible for assisting with various tasks and providing support to the staff. But this also breaks labour laws. For-profit organizations can’t hire volunteers because it breaks minimum wage laws. An exception would be an internship for school.

Pharmacy Assistant vs Volunteer
I've applied to about 15 SDM branches across Toronto for the past month until today. My applications were mixed. Even if I applied online, I also visit the branch to personally drop my resume. There was this one branch who told me that it's nearly impossible to get inside SDM as a pharmacy assistant without Canadian pharmacy experience. I was a licensed pharmacist in my home country and I practiced clinical pharmacy for over 2 years.
According to him, the best way to get in the system and their records will be as a volunteer. He was kinda of disappointed with how the system works, claiming that SDM encourages volunteerism to save a lot on training costs. Is it true that being a volunteer will help me out once there is a vacancy or an opening for a pharmacy assistant slot? Can I use it on my future applications as well?
It sounds like the Labour Relations Board should be made aware of this branch.

They do. It’s likely that they aren’t aware that this store is trying to pull something illegal. Another form of action is to message Loblaws about this to make them aware.
They know. They only care if it makes the news cycle.

Yeah it's not just Canada. It's done in every industrialized country. They do this in Europe including Scandinavian countries where they import African labor for agriculture (for instance they bring in African pickers for blue berries, etc). Same in Japan and Korea I believe.

That's a new low. What could be next? Loblaw asks employees to pay them for each hour they spend in their stores as some sort of redevance?
The employees are using parking spots that should be going to paying customers.
That Keurig in the break room? It costs money to run.
