Everything will be consumed by the US election and whatever conflict arises as a result. This will result in the first organized broader scope violence since the 1860's. I expect a Kennedy level conspiracy type event that will shape the next decade or more. Getting the guy out of office resulted in a failed coup, and the man is not in jail or dead. That alone shows that the country is dead in the water. This is like Brexit; fuck around and find out how much worse in can be. It was the same with Hitler. Inaction makes it worse because it emboldens monsters. Either way, now is the time to become a tin foil hat vender.

A solar eclipse has been interpreted as a harbinger of doom since the dawn of time. The conspiracy theory is merely a modern evolution of this trend.
They happen about once every 18 months, and people seem to keep their cool about it. Last time we had one in the US the biggest news was that Trump stared directly at it without eye protection.
The pandemic, qanon, the big lie, probably a bunch of other things turned many somewhat normal people into science denialist conspiracy theorists, even people who werenβt traditional conservatives. If you are a science denialist you need something else to explain the world around you, conveniently there are many myths surrounding eclipses.

The glasses shouldn't expire, at least not so quickly. But scratches might render them unusable.

There is at least 2 eclipse per years, so I don't see why this one would specifically generate conspiracy theories over all the others.
People will do prediction that will realize by default (Earthquake, people dying, and so on) and claim to have super power, same shit as usual
