Hey guys,

I am a Sikh Indian guy and I was planning to travel to the happiest part of the world with my parents. We are Sikhs and we wear a turban on our head, Is Denmark safe for a vacation for us? I plan on enjoying the Copenhagen nightlife and am worried weather my look with a turban will be safe or not even at night at clubs and bars And along with Copenhagen which other part of Denmark would you suggest is a definite must visit.

Thank you, Cheers

You’ll be just fine, no need to worry.

A second location would depend on your interests and timeline.

Aarhus is the second largest city and has a lot of attractions as well as nightlife opportunities. Aros and Den Gamle By are tourist favourites.

Odense is the third largest city, although it has more of a cozy small town vibe. It’s the birthplace of HC Andersen and a lot of their museums, cafes etc tend to be fairytale themed.

Roskilde and Helsingør are both pretty close to Copenhagen, beautiful and have a lot of interesting museums and buildings.

If you’re interested in modern art, Louisiana is worth a visit.

It’s a bit tricky to go to Bornholm, but it’s the favourite staycation destination for many Danes. Stunning nature, white beaches and quaint cafèes, museums and art studios. It can get very windy though. Almost the same goes for Skagen - in the opposite end of the country.

Just be aware: the reason that Danes are the happiest people in the world is that we have very low expectations. The allows us to be happily surprised when things turn out less terrible than expected.

This approach to life is particularly useful when you visit the very appropriately named Little Mermaid.

I know for a fact that foreigners can be harassed just for their skin color when going out in the Copenhagen nightlife even without wearing a turban. At a certain time especially if you’re out later than 2 AM drunk people start to become weird and mean on the streets, especially young Danish guys. Most of them are on something else as well.

You should not fear for your safety in Denmark, no. At worst, you may get a few odd looks and some comments.

Its probably best to stay in the big cities. Its not unsafe for you outside but you may be harrased a bit

Dont listen to him. Its completely fine, no one would really care. Maybe you would get some comments if you visit a really old-fashioned “brunt værtshus” (i dont know what its called in English) but those places are mainly visited by local drunks.

When visiting nightlife, you should probably leave the turban at the hotel

Drunk danes can do weird stuff

Many guards in Copenhagen's nightlife have racist tendencies. You shouldn't count on getting in. They even reject some who wear shoes the guards don't like. In general, shifts are very different 😂

I wonder why they are not interested in profiting from letting in as many paying costumers as possible?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

MarionberryNo1145 at 2024-01-31 23:42:44+00:00 ID: kocxkhz

Because many of the guards are dickheads and love to decieve their costumers, even though all guards are 1.70 tall and 2 meters wide. They really dont need to play beyonce :)

I've had my hair pulled by guys and girls alike, when I had long hair, and I have many full-bearded friends who have had their beards pulled in the Danish nightlife. A turban might be, unfortunately, an easy target for such drunken harrasment, but it very much depends on the specific place. Walking through a Danish city during the night, or visiting a decent bar/nightclub, you should definitely be safe.

Have a great trip!

Don’t worry, as long as you’re not obviously jewish (such as wearing a (kippah) you won’t have any problems here. Anti-semitism is pretty rampant here. Queen Magretge addressed this issue in not one, but two of the yearly New Years speeches since 2019.

Sihkism isn't all that widely known in Denmark and the only Gurdwara that I know of seem to have had security issues, their fence have been cut a few places.

I see a few turban-wearing sihks in my everyday life, but it really isn't many and I've never seen them outside the major cities.

"must visits" is difficult without knowing where your understanding and interest lies? The happiness is difficult to plan a trip for. For historical context I might suggest the major cities, to understand how big they actually have been in historical times and then visiting the rural side of Denmark to understand how the last couple of millenia have been lived, where the basic cultural elements come from.

I often like recommending Frilandsmuseet - As a perspective on where we came from, alongside perhaps a few of the 800 year old churces and central museums.

I wouldn't worry a lot about the turban, even if you encounter a couple of drunk danes I have difficulty imagining that it would matter a lot.

You won’t have a problem entering bars, but probably your turban won’t fit the dress code for most clubs. So wouldn’t count on getting in any clubs.

And racism and discrimination exist everywhere. But my theory is that it will be less during the day and more during nighttime in the weekends when people have been drinking. But shouldn’t result in anything worse than a few verbal insults.. not violence or anything dangerous.

So to sum up: Welcome to Denmark
