I remember a story I heard from a Katrina survivor, in which some guys attempted to kidnap her and before they could were scared off by her father emerging with a shotgun. Seems they can indeed be useful sometimes.
Of course, if you need a screwdriver don't try a hammer, and if you need a hammer don't try a gun unless it's a .22 cal ramset.
