For me it was "It comes at night". Went into this one expecting a typical horror fest, but ended up being a display on the horror's of human nature instead. Not at all what I was expecting coming into it and felt let down at the end of it. What are some other examples of this that you can think of?

For me, when I was 12, seeing the trailer for Planet Of The Apes (1968) got me super pumped. I just knew from the trailer that this was going to be an incredible movie!!! I got my parents to drop me off to see it on opening weekend.

I have been thrilled by movie trailers since that time, but nothing has ever quite put the anticipation in me that the Planet Of The Apes trailer did in 1968!!

After seeing Oppenheimer, I wanted to see more biopics of important figures from WWII. In the past I've already seen Schindler's list, The imitation game, The King's speech, Patton and Darkest Hour. I plan to see Downfall as well.

I'm looking for recommendations on other movies with a western focus (so not like Gandhi) on important figures (so not like The Pianist) and based on real events (so not like Ip man).

I ask because I just watched "The Devil's Backbone" and Jacinto is just a complete POS, so much so that I'm having a tough time thinking of a character I've found more repulsive. I think the worst part for me is that he's so believable and human. He does some scheming, sure, but he's not some genius, and he's definitely violent, but not quite psychopathic. He's just a mostly normal guy who lets greed get the best of him. Props to Noriega and del Toro for making me hate a character so much.

Who are your completely miserable characters to watch?

I recently watched Twister on HBOMax and the audio sounded terrible.

The effects (tornado) sounds sounded like a MP3 that had been compressed wayyyy too much.

The rest seemed ok (for watching a movie on a phone and AirPods).

Is it just me and my setup? Or did HBOMax fry the audio by over-compressing it?

Watched Up for the first time tonight and I couldn’t help but think: why didn’t Carl use the balloons to fly him and Ellie to Paradise Falls while she was still alive? I couldn’t help but feel bummed for Ellie throughout the movie - it was her lifelong dream to go there and he had the means to do it this whole time?! Did I miss a key scene that explained this?

Recently watched The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy, loved them both so much, I see why they're timeless, but also went in knowing that they were very controversial for their time, and I can see why

what would you say were the controversial big movies of other decades back then and now that made audiences/parents/etc really upset, big classics or not

I always hear people, my father included, say that "superheroes are the biggest thing in Hollywood right now, just like the Western genre. Just like the Western genre, it will die out." This doesn't make any sense to me. Scrolling through the top 150 highest grossing movies worldwide, I don't see a single Western movie. How about the highest grossing movies of all time domestically? Looking through this list, I don't see a single Western. Sure, there have been some iconic Westerns, such as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, but a few iconic Westerns doesn't mean the genre ever dominated cinema in the same way superhero movies dominated. Where does this notion come from?

I watch psychological thrillers regularly and this one stuck with me. I don’t have the words to accurately describe the feeling I got from it. I’ve seen some call it a dark comedy but it wasn’t funny in my opinion. I do see certain parts maybe having a hint of comedic undertone but for me it was outweighed by the feeling of being uneasy. Has anyone else seen this, and if so what did you think of it?

Doesn't necessarily have to be in a good or bad way. It can be either/or.

I'd say Robert Pattinson as Batman. I've seen his other work outside of Twilight and I believe him to be a decent actor, but I'll admit I was extremely surprised by such a gutsy move by the movie studio. Mainly because of the huge amount of backlash against Twilight and Pattinson being pigeonholed into the glittering, effeminate vampire that male audiences especially hated. On paper he seems like the last choice for a studio to green light in such a role.

Add on if you have more!

In light of the other post about the best performance of people not primarily known for acting, what suprising talent did you find out about someone known primarily for acting?

First thing that comes to mind for me is the musical talents of Oscar Isaak from the movie Inside Llewyn Davis, and Bruce Willis's harmonica playing.

Okay so in the beginning of this movie, it starts with Jonas and his 2 peers rescuing people from a submarine. Id assume this is below the false bottom of the trench since the Megaladon is what (presumably) attacked the submarine before and during the rescue.

However what I found a bit confusing is that during the scenes of the Origins first descent below the clouds or the "false bottom" of the trench, it seemed like that was their first ever time going at that depth, especially since it was hinting toward the idea that they were testing the theory of whether the trench was deeper or not.

I know this is probably a flaw in the plot but in case it isn't, am I missing something here? It doesn't really make sense cause if Jonas was doing the rescue below the clouds (which he likely was since that's the only place the Meg was at the time) then why would they treat it as if it was a new discovery 5 years later?

Edit: Alright so now I know it's not at the Mariana Trench where the opening scene occurs, but it is confusing that there was a Meg there somehow.

I’m looking to find streaming services to start watching the El Santo movies. I’m wanting to get into more Mexican cinema as well as campy/cheesy movies.

I’ve heard about El Santo from Vinegar Syndrome (I’ve researched him and I saw that he starred in a whole bunch of movies alongside his wrestling career). I’m hoping to start with the first which I believe is Santo vs the Evil Brain.

Does anyone know where I can find these movies and if they are worth it to someone that likes campy stuff? I’d be very grateful if I can get a lead. I know I texted a lot but you all know why.
