Hey. I’m a master electrician. I have this customer who is demanding special maestro dimmers when we spec for normal dimmers. He has also been a very very condescending in group texts as well as very demanding towards everyone on the job in a group text

My normal procedure is get half down do the rough get rough payment and then do final trim out when painting is done and cabinets are installed

He has been on my ass for months prior to that

I’m also arguing with him about the maestro dimmers which were never specified by him. Normal dimmers is what we only spoke about

I also normally get full Pmnt for any change orders after the fact prior to any work being done. This is normal practice, as I know it to be

Also floor heat, my job(as it has always been) is to run the circuit place the floor mat down. Not to thinset the floor heat as I am not a flooring guy. Do you guys normally do the thinset or floor leveler for that?

I’m an just asking for advice and how to handle this difficult customer

So I was doing a 200 amp upgrade yesterday and it was one that had a lot of older circuits, long exterior run, stone house, etc.

Bottom line it was one that I knew would be a long day. We had the exterior all done and once I get most of my breakers landed, I power up the panel and turn circuits on as I land them. (Homeowners came home and have two young kids so I wanted to get as much on as I could it was cold)

We had the ground rod totally done and the last thing I’m doing is the water pipe ground. I noticed the plumbing was recently done from the street and there were 4 water pipe clamps. Old water pipe ground just went to a pipe up high and the plumbers had jumped the meter and also jumped some newer plumbing they had done where they had valves for a water softener and such. All of that plumbing was copper pro pressed together so seemed redundant but I decided to just run my #4 continuously through all of their clamps.

Well when I touch the ground to the first clamp (house side of water meter) it arced slightly. Nothing crazy but definitely some arcing.

My question is what is this arcing from? The house was running totally fine on the neutral so I know it wasn’t a bad utility neutral. Any ideas?

To note it was clear when the plumbers did their work not long ago they found this to be the case hence why they used so many clamps.

Thanks for any responses.

So for context. I do have my degree, and I've been working an office job for the last 7 years. I have really gotten tired and drained of office work. Mentally, It's just taking a toll on me and I think I need something where I'm able to learn more, and something a little bit different throughout the day. Not to mention I know trades are paying very well right now. I'm looking in it being electrician cuz between that and plumbing it seems like two of the easier ones to pick up and can be pretty rewarding.

The advice I would need on where exactly to get started. Should I start with some sort of certain schooling? Or are there companies out there that hire people that are green as journeymen? I reside in New Mexico. Lastly, for those of you that started his journeyman, what is the pay rate for something that start at.

I currently live in Washington doing electrical (still an apprentice), and was thinking of moving to Texas. I wanted to get more into commercial work but I also wanted to live in a smaller town (Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, ect.). Are there good opportunities to do mainly commercial work in places like these or do I need to be closer to a city?

Curious if this is a simple lost phase the power company needs to fix.

Also curious why I get the 120 on the lost phase, something with the meter?

Just started working and am currently being paid $19.00/hr in Canada as a Level 1. How often do raises happen and how much can I expect to make as a Level 1,2,3 and 4?

I am strongly considering joining the local 220 union in DFW however the drive is an hour to the Union hall. I am closer to fort Worth than Dallas and was wondering how picky I could be with jobs that are closer to home as far as signing the book goes. Also I am a journeyman with my experience being mainly residential, although I do know how to bend pipe decently. Would this be an issue on commercial jobs where a lot of it is new to me? I don't want to run into the scenario of people assuming I should know everything because I am a journeyman. Any Union electricians input would be much appreciated.

Anyone a recent apprentice for 38 in Cleveland? I'm taking the apititude test in a couple weeks and was wondering what is included in the test so I can study. I know it's mainly algebra but what were the questions like?

Need to run an overheard power line to power a small pole barn, what type of wire should be used?? Concerned about it not breaking down in the outdoor elements.

Basement currently has 2 bulb sockets that don't provide enough light. Thinking of converting it to LED tube lights.

So I find it scary working with electric wires. Trying to replace with a fixture that would just need a tube/bulb replaced when the light burns out.

Would 4' LED tube lights & double-ended non-ballast LED tombstones be a good candidate?

Any negatives I should be aware of?

Note - LED strip fixtures appear to be too much work - when they burn out, will need to mess with wires again.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, as the title says I want to move from Florida to Upper East Coast( particularly NY,NJ or Pennsylvania)so I could be closer to my family. I wanted to ask about what school program do they use up there. I'm currently a first year apprentice in the ABC program. Do those states use one program or does it vary state to state or company? I understand this is a very broad question but any and all information/perspective helps. Willing to answer any question you guys have if that helps. Thank you!

I live in Ontario Canada and it made sense to me to have a trade skill for better employment. Figured going to college and studying a 2 year Electrical Engineering Technician course will be the best bet, but further research has unravel a few things. I'm now seeing info that says in order to become an electrician what you need is to complete a 9,000-hour apprenticeship program. Got no clue what to do now, any help would be nice ?
