Hi everyone! I'm a 22 y/o guy whos hoping to start his apprenticeship at IBEW local 236 this year. I do have a question in regard to taking time off though.

Im an avid gamer in my spare time and I like to travel to big gaming event 3-4 times a year. Generally these events go from Friday to Sunday and are announced at least 4 months in advance.

If I let a contractor know that I'd like an unpaid Friday off many months in advance will they usually be fine with that? does anyone from this local have any experience with this? Any advice/insight is appreciated!

I am going to be turning 35 this year. Am seriously considering an electrical apprenticeship as my current job is having a “business restructure” (we all know what that means).

Is 35 to old to start? And is it worth the try for the next 3.5 - 4 years to go through with the whole apprenticeship? I am based in Auckland

I’m in Ontario Canada and hear the schooling for electrical apprentices has a major backlog. I have not been called up for the schooling component yet and am getting a little anxious now. My question is can I complete the 9000 apprenticeship hours by just working or is the schooling component required. Working Non union atm.

Sup.

So friends asked me to add a light in their hallway. There is a 2 gang near it and it controls a light and 2 fans. They wanted me to remove the fans from the switch and have them be constantly hot so they can use the pull chain. They were all spliced in the lights junction box. So I removed the 2 fans and spliced them in a different junction in the attic. Cool, easy money. When I wired the light back up it wouldn’t turn on anymore. I checked voltage and it was reading 12v.

I don’t understand. Even if there’s an open neutral why wasn’t it causing problems prior.

Any idea’s ?

…it becomes ridiculous when every answer to a question, even one as basic as what tool brand is recommended, is answered with an “organize!” union call. I agree 100% that organization is the answer to protecting ourselves against exploitation, hackery, general fuckery, etc. I really do. That being said, try to understand that a sizable chunk of our brothers and sisters exist in areas where that isn’t an immediate option. It’s not a helpful answer and isn’t really conducive to upholding some semblance of integrity within the trade as a whole. End rant. Fight me.

I’m a residential apprentice in Washington state. I just left my former company for a place with benefits, PTO, holidays and much more. I will be staring at 28 p/hr (4 more then previous and w/ zero benefits.) I’m 1 year in and feel like I’m in a great position to continue in this trade and card out next year. My wife and I both hoped this would be the hourly I’d land at the new place and yes I know. The union is much higher and simply put, I really like resi work. One year in the trade and in happy with this new trajectory.

Hey I've been doing electrical work (non union don't judge me) for about 6 years and I am really interested in trying to get my journeyman license this year. I live down here in Miami,FL all I need is 3 yrs worth of W2 forms and some letters from to verify I have 3000 hours of work experience. But I'm kinda confused how the license works because some one told me theirs a license for the county and another one for the state and I'm trying to get the right one

Also I was wondering how much has the code changed from the 2017 NEC to the 2023 NEC because I have the 2017 book... Also I'ma need at least a solid 2 months of studying to pass it on my first go round. I pretty much got section 2 and 3 down pretty decent. So dose anybody know of like a good study guide/program to use to help me pass please let me know thanks in advance
