Hi guys. I just bought this beautiful LTO-8 drive beast (second-hand):

It is currently connected to my main server, which is in the basement. However, when I read the manual of that drive and several posts in this sub, I realized that this kind of device seems to be very sensitive to dust and it kind of needs purified air to reliably work without producing error (they even mention not putting it in a room with paper or printer).

Therefore, I highly suspect that placing it in my basement is really not the right place, as the air probably contains a certain amount of dust (well, it is a standard european building, so it is not dusty like an old haunted mansion of hollywood movies, but you get what I mean). And I do not want to place this thing in my apartment, as it is loud as hell while it is working (and writing a lto-8 tape takes like >12 hours).

So I was thnking of building a DIY "clean air" box where the drive could sit, inspired by the Corsi-Rosenthal thing with hvac filters and standard PC fans to help the air flow through it. I am pretty sure I already saw people posting photos of such things on reddit. What do you think of this idea? How did you do with your own LTO drive?

I noticed it's a pain between different services to get all seasons. Does anyone know where can I download all seasons?

Building a high capacity Plex server. What does everyone recommend as far as hard drive brand/capacity? Maybe ones that are not super loud either ?

Hey, I'm trying to finalize my plan for backups where I would like to backup one Window PC, and one Linux. Not sure how often I want to backup them but let's say monthly, on top of that I would also like to include some stuff from my phone (which won't change much, at least not monthly), and some documents (which probably needs to be backed up only once) - so with all of that needs backing up I'm really not sure how to handle it. I want to backup it all to external HDD drive and Backblaze B2. Also, I think it's worth mentioning that I would prefer not to backup whole PCs but only selected folders and files.

Should I just copy and paste it over?

Should I have some folder structure on devices where I will backup to? Separate folders for PCs? Should the old files still be there, and new backups should be done to a folder with current date as a name? Or is there a better to do it?

I've read about some software, like: FreeFileSync, Duplicati and Kopia or paid Macrium Reflect but I can't decide if any of them are worth for my use case. So please, can anybody help me decide how flow of my backups should look like exactly? I'm really at this point where I'm thinking of just copying and pasting stuff from one device to another.

I currently manually copy the URLs of all of my YouTube subscription notifications to the clipboard with JDownloader open, so that JDownloader can automatically detect and save the URLs, video and stream names, etc.

I can then use the JDownloader linkgrabber list to find any video or stream that I ever got a notification for. Some of these videos or streams are unlisted and cannot be found again any other way. Others have gone offline, but having the URL can sometimes be useful to find an archived version somewhere (such as the Wayback Machine).

However, I am running into multiple problems. For one thing, repetitiously manually right-clicking on and copying hundreds of URLs every day is causing me arm pain now, and JDownloader is getting increasingly sluggish due to the hundreds of thousands of videos in its linkgrabber list.

Is there any way to automatically (or at least easily) save the URLs and video names of all of one's YouTube subscription notifications?

I have 16000 songs I legally obtained through college network server and something they called Napster back in the day. I kept it going from hard drive to hard drive and now I have them on a SSD in my new car. It was worth the trouble, I almost gave up when all the streaming services took off.

I have 100gb of science and math textbooks, test prep, education resources, ect and I’ve never read any of them as far as know. I have obscure books about all sort of odd topics. And I only remember because my 1.5tb is dying. Like taking all the treasure off a doomed ship before it’s lost under the ocean for eternity. How month can I keep this going?

I have my pictures saved on memory cards and several HDD, 3 different paid web services, what am I doing? I should downsize this but I don’t want to risk loosing anything. I think I have an issue.

I have files from our first Mac Performa 660 that my brother broke and I can’t get into because they’re locked on something called “At Ease”; a user system that I need help finding a way into so I can access my late 1990s school work, creative writing and more. (If anyone has an idea of how to open the files, I’ll take any leads).

I’ve been able to save all my digital course work from college, I might even still have the hard drive somewhere in my stuff. I have my wife’s 18 years old laptop because I am going to take out the hard drive and download her pictures, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet….

My one regret was getting a virus on my first laptop in 1999 and wiping away a year’s s worth of digital timeline in a continuous streak of hording.

My name is Irrfin and I’m a dataholic.

I have a large collection of photos with random filenames, many of which are of people who I know the names of. It would be too time-consuming to go through each one individually and rename it with the name of the person or people in it.

There are programs like Adobe Lightroom, ACDSee Photo Studio, and digiKam that enable one to bulk scan photos, detect faces, and then supply the software with a name for each face so that in the future, it will automatically detect and recognize the faces that it has been trained to.

However, I have yet to find any that do what I need: to allow bulk renaming the image files by appending the name of the person or persons whose faces have been detected in the image to the original filename (ideally as a prefix).

Is there any software that can do this?

So I mainly listen to metal music and it's subgenres, I'm sure there are like-minded people here and I'm wondering, are there efforts from a group of people or organization to preserve metal music, specially underground music (I doubt Iron Maiden's or Black Sabbath's discography will ever disappear)?

Sometimes it's very difficult to find certain material from a band, especially if it's something released in the 00's or earlier, I usually resort to Russian websites, torrents, etc to download certain music because it's nowhere to be found (band split up ages ago, no monetization interest from their members, etc). Sometimes I have luck, sometimes I don't.

It's very sad to think that in some years when the members of a band and their immediate family die and their fans who bought them merch die, probably their music will be completely forgotten and probably sitting in a landfill like it never existed, and that will happen in the era of data!

Wouldn't be cool if someone in 2400 say "let's discover new music, let me check this EP that this Portuguese band released in 1996" because a project like this exists? I'm a dreamer I guess lol

I have a couple of totally legit movies and TV shows that I want people to be able to watch. I've tried setting up some sort of external facing Plex but that didn't work. (I have no access to my router's admin/proxy forwarding/etc)

So I uploaded a few files to OneDrive and that's almost full.

pCloud seemed good, but not cheap for large amounts of storage.

How do you all share your many files with people?

I just bought an Optiplex 3000 (i5-12500) for a great deal but this machines have very limited space for expandability. I'll be using this machines exclusively for Plex + arr apps but I'm starting to loose my mind trying to find a nice DAS. Every post I've seen usually it's for recommending mediasonic or terramaster, but I'm still unsure on what path should I choose. I would like to keep it bellow 200€ (I could wait for some deals) with 4-8 bays if possible. I'll appreciate if it's not too loud. No DIY please.

HI.

As a zoomer who only uses DVDs for backups very very IMPORTANT data or burning a CD in the car for parents, I'm wondering what other purposes these discs were used for.

By the way, I was born in 2006 and the only memories I have are movies, games on DVD and how I install an OS on my computer.

Tell us what you store on disks if you want, and perhaps there are some tips on how to properly store disks in your opinion.

Have fun.

Hello, friends.

(My goal here is not piracy, but listen to my ripped CDs using Siri/Alexa)

I currently use Apple Music and it’s really easy to ask Siri or Alexa to play some song and it plays without much hassle.

But I noticed that most of the songs we listen to are from some Disney movie for my son. I think it would be cheaper if I bought the CD, put it on a local server and listen to them Plex style, streaming from myself.

Do you know if it’s possible to ask Siri/Alexa/Google home to do such thing with same or similar ease of use?

Thank you!

I'm trying to boot up my dad's old MyCloud Mirror. Unsure if it's Gen 1 or 2.

Is it normal that it boots up and down repeatedly? It's been going for at least 10 minutes at this point.

It started out by beginning to boot the first drive, then shutting down quickly. Then it moved on to completely booting up the first drive, beginning to boot up the second drive, and then shutting down quickly. Now it's booting up the first drive completely, and seemingly shutting down again before the second drive gets spinning at all. It repeats this over and over again.

The power adapter also looks to be getting really hot.

Any advice?

I've been hunting for a desktop SSD as in one that literally sits on the top of your desk and never moves.

Ideally it is about 5tb plus or minus a few, fast as hell, and has multiple ports. That last part starts to get in to the difficult question for me to find the answer to. I don't know if this should be accomplished via multiple connects, a switch of some kind, or whether it can even have two active connections. My knowledge of how SSDs work and their limitations is very, well, limited.

I want this drive to be

  • Storage for both my partner and I to store (and trade to an extent) all our important files/docs. As such I want a way to keep it connected to both of our computers so we don't have to constantly switch the cable around.

  • Photos (and a lot because we're both photography hobbyists),

  • As well as be able to install and run a steam game or two if possible (but not a make or break on this one).

Most importantly, I have a Win11 PC and tablet, and she has a Macbook Pro. So it would need to play nice with both. I'm sure there's a relatively easy answer, even if the answer is I can't. But because of how specific my need is I've really struggled finding the answers.

I'm currently using 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD as my D: drive.

It can't store any steam games and such, it'll throw me this message at the end of the game verification;"Disk read error".

Here's the cmd promp, crystaldiskinfo and the sound it is making whenever i download a game on the D: drive :

Command Prompt :

CrystalDiskInfo :

Audio Link :

Is this HDD pretty much done for or is there anything i could do to possibly fix it?

I have a music addiction about 8 tb worth.

Last week I bought two external drives at best buy to transfer files over to so I could have more back up's of the data.

I got one hard drive transfered so I thought I would start copying the drive to the other drive I got.

Today I come home and I can see both hard drives on the computer but when I go to open either of them it says.

"The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

I have no pets, no one else lives with me, and my desktop was off all day today.

Any idea what happened? Did I just have bad luck and two week old drives died at once?

P.S. i checked my other drives I have around and they are all working fine. So assuming just horrible luck? Or did I try to transfer to much at once? Transfered about 200-300 gb of data a day until it broke.

I recently discovered this community. I joked with my friend that "I'm officially a data hoarder" after buying one 8tb and one 16tb (Ironwolf Pro) and I already had another 8tb from previously owned laptops and PCs.

But, that made me think of this question. Nothing serious. Just want to know what you people think.
