I'm looking for a repo to host a couple of projects. I hadn't considered codeberg as a home until now.

I guess I'll donate when I sign up.

I get it - I think I just have a different point of view.

Selling out used to be a sin that real artists would never commit. But we need to eat.

Before money was a thing, that would (probably) mean you gather food before you call your family around to tell the next episode of your magnum opus. But now it means you find a sponsor for your channel, a buyer for your story, or a company to pay while you work on a script.

We've been so discombobulated over the past few months because we don't have a backup plan. It's easy to joke about us being the 51st state because we are so tightly integrated with the US already.

If we were less reliant on US trade, unilateral US tariffs would be less effective. We would have partners and allies elsewhere. If Germany was reliant on our steel, or India was reliant on our aluminum, we would hopefully be able to wring support out of them.

We're talking hypotheticals, so it's hard to know what would change if we'd made different choices in the past. But, generally, bullies pick on those they can victimize. We're easy to victimize because we don't have an economic plan B.

Our society has a division of labour. We can afford to have full-time story tellers, but they need a way to get food, so they sell their stories.

In a society without a division of labour then whoever tells the best story does, but that's after they've gotten everyone fed.

He's trying to dunk on Trudeau&co, but he's not wrong.

There were calls for Canada to reduce internal trade barriers as a reaction to NAFTA in the 90s. We didn't. Similarly, we haven't prioritized trade with other partners in any meaningful way. Even after the first Trump presidency.

Federal and provincial politicians could have done any of the things they're rushing towards now, but they didn't care.

I'm sure Moe takes his share of responsibility for that in the interview. 😬

Those were good times. I still think about it sometimes.

What about stuff like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Captain America, Superman, etc? They're mostly entertainment, but they're (originally) aimed at kids and young adults. They show the triumph of good/kindness over evil, and all that stuff.

Didn't Bannon say something about flooding the zone with weird/outrageous statements and actions, so your opposition is fragmented and unable to mobilize?

I think that's what we're seeing in the US.

I get that vibe whenever I browse r/all on Reddit. It seems like dueling astroturf attempts.

What if you had a crane?

Hear me out... What about a metal stick?

Asymmetric bezels low key bug me. Are there technical reasons why they're hard?

Business bankruptcies growing (www.theglobeandmail.com)

Of greater concern is that business insolvencies have already overshot 2019 levels at a time of reasonably healthy economic activity

Is the Bank of Canada finally going to get the layoffs it was looking for?

Razr overload (self.android)
submitted 2 years ago by sbv to c/[email protected]

Anyone else getting inundated with ads for the Razr+? I'm seeing a tsunami of ads and reviews saying how awesome the outer screen is.

Maybe it's great. But I'm having a hard time understanding why a small(er) screen on a thick hunk of technology is better than a big screen on a thin hunk of technology.

Report card comments (self.dadsonly)
submitted 2 years ago by sbv to c/[email protected]

My youngest got "has learned to accept the consequences of his actions" on his report card.

Anyone else get funny/entertaining comments?

Someone bought a century home in Saint John and is allowing it to rot. The buyer apparently lives in Toronto and doesn't care that the building is falling apart.

This is shitty. Someone has the money for "an investment", which means other people don't get somewhere to live.

What to watch for mortgage rates (www.theglobeandmail.com)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by sbv to c/[email protected]

Any reprieve from the rate pain will depend heavily on four developments:

  • Higher unemployment (Next jobs report: July 7)
  • Slowing GDP (Next GDP report: June 30)
  • Tumbling core inflation (Next inflation report: June 27)
  • Easing home values (Next real estate board reports: first week of July)

The BoC interest rate announcement on July 12 is probably pretty significant too. 😬

1,909 notices of complaint have been filed with the city of Ottawa about the vacant unit tax.

lol

[some company built] two-bedroom and three-bedroom stacked townhouse units in Toronto, selling for $500,000 on average. The city charged our project the full development charges of $30,000 per unit. At the same time, companies behind luxury condos in the city selling for $1.5-million were also paying $30,000 per unit.

Interesting idea. It doesn't sound like a silver bullet for the housing crisis, but it would be a step in the right direction.

Finland has virtually no pedestrian/cyclist fatalities in their roads. In 2018, Canada had 332.

My ten year old boy is out with friends. It's his first kids-alone-on-bikes outing. I'm a little scared, a little proud, and doing my best not to worry.
