pretty straightforward. these are a bit late but better now than never; you can find these two communities here:

thanks

sidenote: we're not exactly in a position to take on whatever V&V will be right now because we have too much going on so that's now a backburner community. no ETA on that one, but the idea isn't tabled or anything.

if you want to post links or discuss Reddit over the next while, please localize it to this thread in order to keep things tidy, thanks! (a more formal body may be forthcoming, but that'll come in the morning if so)

summary: we have [email protected] for US news now. please use that going forward for most US news you've previously posted here

this is a bit of a sudden thing but: World News was one of our most popular community options on the survey, so it seems pretty clear we should have it. it also seems pretty silly to shunt that off into its own community and make US News the "default", so we won't do that. as a result: we're formally converting this section into the World News section and making US News its own community. you can find that over at [email protected].

this will be a transition of a few days as people adjust; subsequent US news to this post will be pruned increasingly militantly over time here as the community over there takes shape. please also note and read the pinned post in that community.

if the news is American but it has an international facet that is worth talking about, you may continue to post it here since that is World News.

thanks!

this is a great interview with Christian, fyi, for people who haven't seen it yet

Hypothetical example: am I allowed to take a socially conservative stance on gender-affirming healthcare or would that be considered ‘hate speech’?

we're not going to suddenly deviate from doing our One Rule thing and break out a legal contract and definition for what hate speech is and isn't--and frankly, even asking this is already kind of a self-report.[^1] this reply also heavily implies you don't really get why we've structured things the way they are here. as for the other question: if you think that gender-affirming care is wrong or immoral or whatever or that trans people are freaks (because that is basically always the unstated implication of such a belief) then no, this really isn't the instance for you.

[^1]: because let's be very clear: the vast majority of people do not have to ask this question.

I just wanted to highlight some of your bias.

we are extremely fine with being "biased" or perceived as biased in favor of minority groups, to be very clear.

it's unavoidable to center Elon here but can we just take a step back and appreciate what an unimaginably stupid, bad, and completely antithetical to a usable website this idea is? blocking has been a feature on like everything since phpBB forums because it literally just works. it's an easy way to curate your experience without escalating and it's a logical imitation of being able to simply avoid a person in real life. the idea of removing this in favor of nothing but mutes is just goofy as fuck (and if you make muting the new "block", what's even the difference between them? people will just use them basically the same way!).

as much as i love Matrix: it is not a suitable alternative to Discord for non-tech people, and my friends will never switch to it, and i think it would behoove tech people to be a lot more humble about this. many people--most of my friends included--will sooner to switch to what comes after Discord than Matrix, and if need be i'm almost certainly going to follow them (although my main community will probably switch to a forum if i get my way).

in fact: my own first experience with Matrix ended in an account i can't use anymore for inscrutable reasons i don't understand, and getting restarted ate a ton of messages someone sent me that thankfully weren't too important. not a great first impression! comparatively i have never had issues with Discord on any meaningful level.

i'm under no pretenses Youtube is ever gonna give a fuck and do consistent things about this kind of content but it's always fun when one of these people faces any consequences for posting it

[-] [email protected] 40 points 1 year ago

oh god hopefully not with what we're running now lol, we'll see on the 12th i guess but for some perspective we can probably handle traffic of three to five times the intensity of what we did today (eyeballing it) based on just the metrics i can quickly reference now (i am not our tech person)

spez has never struck me as particularly capable of reading the moment, so i'm hardly surprised by that.

so far the AMA has been up for about 20 minutes, and he's answered 3 questions. heavily downvoted as expected.

there are three constants in life: death, taxes, and Clarence Thomas writing legal opinions which should get him disbarred from the judiciary and legal system entirely

Looks like the Chinese “investor” is the Communist Party.

can we get a citation on this--preferably before asserting it as fact, please? i'd like it if, on this site, we didn't just say things (especially if they sound in line with our priors) but actually substantiate them.
