There is an official announcement here: https://lemmy.ml/post/2540874

So says literally everyone I have ever seen comment on the matter. Seriously, is there anyone out there that has tried CarPlay/AndroidAuto and said "eh, I don't see the point"?

Especially when you're GM. It's already an extreme longshot that I was ever going to buy another GM car, but this is 100% the final nail in the coffin.

$3.33/month? I too would like to know who your VPS provider is.

Honestly kind of a hilarious misunderstanding of Lemmy too. Beehaw will never replace reddit because they explicitly do not want to and have already taken aggressive steps to make sure that they don't (i.e. detailed application requirements and defederating multiple instances).

Apollo is literally just one dude. He should do whatever he wants. He had a good run, almost certainly made a life-changing amount of money and is ready to move on. I can totally respect that.

I also think anyone who says should "just" probably has never written anything as complex and popular as Apollo before. There really is no "just" anything at that scale.

I think things have tightened up a lot over there in the last 5 or so days. I don't even remember what I put (definitely nothing more substantial than yours) and I have an account over there of similar to age. People who have tried to sign up more recently have mentioned being rejected after multiple serious looking responses.

Out of curiosity, how did you come up with the current list of defederated instances? Clicking on the first several links leads me to believe most are Mastodon servers and a good chunk of them don't even exist anymore. Is the list largely based on some pre-existing list maintained elsewhere in the Fediverse?

What happens if a server goes down or a server keeper decides they want to modify some post or comment? It doesn’t seem much different from what spez did, except now you put everything in the hand of another random person. Legal issues are potentially even worse in this case because there is no company behind the site to blame for their wrongdoings.

You put everything in the hands of many random people :). This is fundamentally no worse than the situation with Reddit.

You have to create tens of accounts if you want to post on other instances. Yeah, you might be able to subscribe to communities from one instance but you can’t post there, only on your own. Maybe I’m missing something here but it doesn’t seem like you can post to the communities of other instances.

That is not correct. I'm not sure what issue you're having, but if you give more details about what you've tried maybe we can help.

Alternatively: create the same community in your instance? That would just make useless duplications or even separate instances even more…

Again, no different from the current state of reddit, you just have many Gaming@whatever instances instead of /r/gaming, r/truegaming/, /r/really_true_gaming_for_real, etc.

There are absolutely rough edges here, but to be honest I think a lot of people either weren't around or don't remember the early days of Reddit. There were a lot of rough edges back then too.

How to get users for a new instance? (lemmy.villa-straylight.social)
submitted 1 year ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I self-hosted an instance a when I got here a few days ago. The server costs me the same whether I use it or not, so I'd like to let as many people sign up as I can. I had a few people sign up already before join-lemmy.org was changed to require 5 monthly active users, but now my instance isn't shown there because it's below the limit.

Any idea on how to attract a dozen or so users so that I can show up on the main join-lemmy page again?

I think this is right, but there is a bit of a confounding factor in that mods and power users of reddit are disproportionately likely to jump ship IMO. So while the masses might still show up to reddit, it's entirely possible that the quality of the content will take a nosedive anyway. I'm not really sure how much of a difference that makes. I suspect not enough of one to kill reddit off completely, but I do think there's a good chance that it's enough to get Lemmy off the ground and viable. I think we probably only need to see 1% or maybe even fewer users migrate here from reddit to make Lemmy active enough that I never have any reason to go back to reddit again.

To some extent this is a feature, not a problem though. I know it's elitist, but in a lot of ways the internet was a much nicer place when it was just a bunch of tech nerds.

It's quite the opposite at this point. Reddit isn't really in control anymore. Rather, something drastic would have to happen to Lemmy to cause me to leave. Reddit is no longer the default choice.
